Thesis).ToentereithertheInternshiporThesisoptionstudentsmustcompletetheprescribedcoursework
andnormallyachieveaminimumGPAof3.30foradmissiontoOptionBand3.50forOptionC.

4.ExtendedResearchEssay.POLI691.TheExtendedResearchEssayisadirectedstudysupervisedby
afacultymemberwithwhomastudentcompletedacourseintheirareaofconcentration.Requiring
additionalresearch,thisdegreerequirementbuildsonatermpapersubmittedatthegraduatelevelina
concentrationcourseandisconsideredtobeasignificantrevisionandextensionofthatpaper,withan
extensivebibliography(12credits).

LanguageRequirement:AllOptionBcandidatesmustpassanexaminationinFrenchbasedonatest
administeredbytheDepartment.Thisexamconsistsoftranslatingapassageofliterature,relevanttothe
field,fromFrenchintoEnglish.

4.InternshipwithResearchPaper.POLI693.Theinternshipisafourmonthjobplacementineitherthe
publicorprivatesector.Underthedirectionofafacultysupervisor,thestudentpreparesanoriginal,
theoreticalworkthatcomprisesaseriesofpolicyrecommendationsthatcontributetothepolicyprocess
inCanada.Thestudentisrequiredtodefendthepaperbeforehis/herfacultysupervisorandtworeaders
(21credits).

CanadianandQuebecPolitics,InternationalPolitics,ComparativePoliticsandPoliticalTheory.(6
credits).

3.ApprovedElectiveandCognateCourses.Two3creditcourseschosenfromanyofthefollowing
subfields:PublicPolicyandAdministration,CanadianandQuebecPolitics,ComparativePolitics,
InternationalPolitics,PoliticalTheory,orPOLI601(ResearchDesign),orfromcognatecoursesoffered
inrelateddisciplines.Forcognatecourses,approvaloftheDirectorisrequired.Insomecasesapproval
forregistrationincognatecoursesmustbeobtainedfromthedepartmentinvolved(6credits).

4.ThesisProposal.POLI694.Thiscourseisadirectedstudyinvolvingacomprehensiveunderstanding
oftheliteratureintheareaofresearchdirectlyrelevanttothethesistopicunderthedirectionofafaculty
supervisor.Thewrittenassignmentsinvolveacomprehensiveliteraturereview,annotatedbibliography
andresearchdesignthatculminateinathesisproposalpresentedinanoraldefencebeforethethesis
supervisorandtwofacultymembersinthegraduateprogram.(3credits).

5.MastersThesis.POLI696.Studentsarerequiredtodemonstratetheirabilitytocarryoutoriginal,
independentresearch.Thethesis,whichisresearchedandwrittenunderthedirectionofasupervisor
andthesiscommittee,isdefendedbeforethestudentsthesiscommittee(24credits).

Admissionrequirements

AdmissionRequirements.Anundergraduatehonoursdegreeortheequivalentisrequired.Studentswho
donothavethenecessarybackgroundinpublicpolicyandpublicadministrationaswellasinthe
concentrationwhichtheyhavechosen,mayberequiredtotakespecificundergraduatecoursesinadditionto
theregularprogram.Incertaincases,applicantsmayberequiredtocompleteaqualifyingprograminorder
tobeeligibleforadmissiontothegraduateprogram.

StudentswhowereeducatedoutsideCanadaandwhosemothertongueisneitherEnglishnorFrenchwillbe
requiredtosuccessfullycompleteTOEFL(TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage)exambeforebeing
admitted.
