RichardBaumanisafolkloristandanthropologist,nowretiredfromIndianaUniversityBloomington.[1]Heis
DistinguishedProfessoremeritusofFolklore,ofAnthropology,andofCommunicationandCulture.Before
comingtoIUin1985,hewastheDirectoroftheCenterforInterculturalStudiesinFolkloreandEthnomusicology
(nowknownastheAmricoParedesCenterforCulturalStudies)attheUniversityofTexasandafacultymember
intheUTDepartmentofAnthropology.JustbeforeretiringfromIndiana,hewaschairoftheIUDepartmentof
FolkloreandEthnomusicology,aswellasanimportantmemberoftheDepartmentofAnthropologyandthe
DepartmentofCommunicationandCulture.

BaumanearnedaB.A.withhonorsanddistinctioninEnglishfromtheUniversityofMichigan.Hethenearnedan
M.A.infolklorein1962atIndianaUniversity,workingcloselywithW.EdsonRichmondandMacEdwardLeach,
aUniversityofPennsylvaniafolkloristthenvisitingIndianaUniversity.HenextwenttothePenn,wherehe
receivedboththeM.S.inAnthropologyandthePh.D.inAmericanCivilizationin1968.AtPennhestudiedwith
thefolkloristandlinguisticanthropologistDellHymes,AnthonyF.C.Wallace,aprominenthistoricaland
psychologicalanthropologist,andthehistorianLeeBenson.[2]

Hehasbeeninfluentialinanumberofdifferentfields,fromperformancestudies,linguisticanthropology,and
Quakerstudiestosemiotics,thehistoryofanthropologyandfolkloristics.HewroteLetYourWordsBeFew,oneof
theearliestworksonlanguageideology.[3]Thisbookinspiredotherscholarstobeginexploringhowpeople'sideas
abouthowlanguagefunctionsshapestheirlinguisticpractices.Morerecently,hehascowrittenabookwith
CharlesL.BriggsVoicesofModernity:LanguageIdeologiesandthePoliticsofInequality.[4]Inthisbook,Bauman
andBriggsexplorethelanguageideologiespresentintheworkofLockeandHerder,amongothers,askingwhat
assumptionsaboutlanguageshapedsomeofthemostimportantphilosophicalworkoftheEnlightenment.Bauman
andBriggswontheEdwardSapirPrizeforthisbookfromtheSocietyforLinguisticAnthropologyinNovember
2006.[5]

BaumanhasbeenaGuggenheimFellow,aFellowoftheCenterforAdvancedStudyintheBehavioralSciences,
FolkloreFellowoftheFinnishAcademyofSciences,andtwiceholderofNationalEndowmentfortheHumanities
Fellowships.HeisaFellowoftheAmericanFolkloreSocietyandin2008hewasawardedtheAFSLifetime
ScholarlyAchievementAward.[6][7]
