Rengln aparte merecen las bebidas que tienen como objetivo
activar o estimular el sistema nervioso, conocidas como
energetizantes, una versin moderna de los tnicos y elxires
milagrosos.
Quin no se siente por las maanas con un urgente y fisiolgico
deseo de tomarse una humeante taza de caf? Estudios
recientes en la Universidad de Wake Forest, en Carolina del
Norte, EUA, han demostrado que los individuos habituados a
consumir unas tres tazas de caf al da requieren de una dosis
cotidiana de cafena para tener una actividad cerebral normal, lo
que concretamente constituye una adiccin. La cafena es
tambin la base de estas bebidas surgidas a partir de 1997, ao
en el que apareci la primera y ms popular de ellas en los
EUA: Red Bull, que para 2003 ocupaba ms del 60% de este
mercado. El problema con estas bebidas es la escasa regulacin
que existe para su venta y la indiscriminada promocin de su
consumo. Mientras que en algunos pases europeos su venta no
est autorizada, en muchos otros, incluido Mxico, se promueve
en lugares selectos: discotecas, clubes deportivos, etc. Andarn
realmente los jvenes tan necesitados de un impulso energtico?
o ser quiz la promesa de obtener alas, como sugiere la
propaganda de Red Bull lo que promueve el consumo? O ser
que se han convencido como reza otro anuncio, que hay
cosas ms importantes que hacer que dormir?
Tan slo en el 2003, Red Bull invirti ms de 40 millones de
dlares en publicidad para vender a los jvenes la imagen de
poder asociada con su consumo.
El ingenio no falta entre los competidores, quienes basados en
esta imagen han generado marcas de productos con nombres
asociados a la potencia:Go Fast , No Fear , FIT, Pure Power

ventas en un 81% con respecto a 2004 y superan ya los 1 000
millones de dlares, mientras que las bebidas para deportistas lo
hicieron en un 21%. Por el contrario, la venta de bebidas con
frutas cay en 2%. Ojal se calculara tambin el costo que
tendrn que pagar los consumidores a mediano y largo plazo
para ajustar sus mquinas energetizadas.
Cuidado con la cafena
Hasta ahora, el nico componente en estas bebidas con actividad
