(PrescribedFormatandSpecification)

1. GENERAL:

ThebroadguidelinestothepreparationofM.E./M.Techreport/thesisareoutlined
below. In general, the thesis shall report, in an organized fashion, an account of original
researchworkofthestudentleadingtothediscoveryofnewfactsortechniquesorcorrelation
offactsalreadyknown(analytical,experimental,hardwareorientedetc)anddemonstratinga
quality so as to make a definite contribution to the advancement of knowledge and the
student'sabilitytoundertakesustainedresearchandpresentthefindingsinanappropriate
mannerwithactualaccomplishmentsoftheworkplainlystatedandhonestlyappraised.

2. NUMBEROFCOPIESTOBESUBMITTEDFOREVALUATION:

TheReport/Thesis(atthetimeofsubmission)shouldhavethefollowingpagemargins:

Bottomedge : 25to30mm
Leftside : 35to40mm
Rightside : 20to25mm

Thereport/thesisshouldbepreparedongoodqualitywhitepaperpreferablynot
lowerthan80gsm.

Tablesandfiguresshouldconformtothemarginspecifications.Largesizefigures
shouldbephotographicallyorotherwisereducedtotheappropriatesizebeforeinsertion.

6.MANUSCRIPTPREPARATION:

ThegeneraltextofthesisshallbetypedinfontstyleTimesNewRomanandfontsize
13.Samequalityofpapershouldbeusedforthepreparationoftheentirereport/thesis.

Theheadingsofallitems2to10listedinsection4shouldbetypedincapitalletters
withoutpunctuationandcentered50mmbelowthetopofthepage.Thetextshouldcommence
4spacesbelowthisheading.

forreport/thesisaregiveninAnnexureI.

6.2 BonafideCertificate TheBonafideCertificateshallbein1anddouble


spacingaspertheformatshowninAnnexureII.Thecertificateshall carrythe
supervisorssignature andshallbefollowedbythesupervisorsname, academic
designation(notanyotherresponsibilitiesofadministrativenature),departmentand
fulladdressoftheinstitutionwherethesupervisorhasguidedthestudent.IfJoint
Supervisorisinvolved,athirdcolumnmaybeaddedaftertheSupervisorwiththe
detailsassimilartothatofSupervisor.

6.3 Abstract Abstractshouldbeanessaytypeofnarrationnotexceedingtwo


pages outlining the research problem, the methodology used for tackling it and a
summaryofthefindings,typedindoublelinespacing.

6.4 Acknowledgement The acknowledgement shall be brief and should not


exceedonepage,typedindoublespacing.Thestudentssignatureshallbemadeatthe
rightbottomabovehis/hernametypedincapitals.

6.5 TableofcontentsThetableofcontentsshouldlistallmaterialfollowingitas
well as any material which precedes it. The title page, Bonafide Certificate and
AcknowledgmentwillnotfindaplaceamongtheitemslistedintheTableofContents
butthepagenumbersinlowercaseRomanlettersaretobeaccountedforthem.One
andahalfspacingshouldbeadoptedfortypingthematterunderthishead.Aspecimen
copyoftheTableofContentsforreport/thesisisgiveninAnnexureIII.
6.6 ListofTable Thelistshoulduseexactlythesamecaptionsastheyappear
abovethetablesinthetextandthecaptionshallfollowsentencecase.Oneandahalf
spacingshouldbeadoptedfortypingthematterunderthishead.
6.7 ListofFiguresThelistshoulduseexactlythesamecaptionsastheyappear
belowthefiguresinthetextandthecaptionshallfollow sentencecase.Oneanda
halfspacingshouldbeadoptedfortypingthematterunderthishead.

6.8 ListofSymbols,AbbreviationsandNomenclatureOneandahalfspacing
should be adopted for typing the matter under this head. Standard symbols,

The main text may have several chapters and each chapter may be
dividedintoseveraldivisionsandsubdivisions.

Eachchaptershouldbegivenanappropriatetitle.

Tables and Figures in a chapter should be placed in the immediate


vicinityofthereferencewheretheyarecited.

Footnotesshouldbeusedsparingly.Theyshouldbetypedsinglespace
andplaceddirectlyunderneathintheverysamepage,whichreferstothematerial
theyannotate.
6.10 Appendices Appendices are provided to give supplementary information,
which ifincludedinthemaintextmayserveasadistractionandcloudthecentral
themeunderdiscussion.

* AppendicesshouldbenumberedusingArabicnumerals,e.g.Appendix
1,Appendix2,etc.

* Appendices,TablesandreferencesappearinginAppendicesshouldbe
numberedandreferredtoatappropriateplacesjustasinthecaseofchapters.

* Appendicesshallcarrythetitleoftheworkreportedandthesametitle
shallbemadeinthecontentspagealso.

* Thelistofpublicationsmadebyresearchstudentduringtheperiodof
research,shallbebroughtintheAppendixtitled,asListofPublicationsandthe
sameshallbereportedinthecontents.Theauthorcanreferthepublications
mentionedintheAppendix,inthetextoftheReport/Thesis,bymentioning
his/hernamefollowedbyAppendixnumberandtheyearofpublication,in
brackets.

6.11 ListofReferencesAnyworksofotherresearchers,ifusedeitherdirectlyor
indirectly,shouldbeindicatedatappropriateplacesinthereport/thesis.Thecitation
mayassumeanyoneofthefollowingforms.

Theauthorspublicationsduringtheperiodofresearchshouldnotbeincluded
inthereferencesandcanbeseparatelymentionedasin6.10.

Thelistingshouldbetyped4spacesbelowtheheading"REFERENCES"in
alphabetical order in single spacing leftjustified. The reference material should be
listed in the alphabetical order of the first author. The name of the author/authors
shouldbeimmediatelyfollowedbytheyearandotherdetails.Atypicalillustrativelist
givenbelowrelatestothecitationexamplequotedabove.

diagramsmaybedesignatedasfigures.

* Atableorfigureincludingcaptionshouldbeaccommodatedwithinthe
prescribed margin limits and should appear on the page, where the first
referenceismadeasfaraspossible.

* Tablesandfiguresonhalfpageorlessinlengthmayappearonthesame
pagealongwiththetext.However,theyshouldbeseparatedfromthetextboth
aboveandbelowbytriplespacing.

* Twoormoresmalltablesorfiguresmaybegroupedifnecessaryina
singlepage.

* Photographsifany,shouldbeincludedascolourprintonly.Morethan
onephotographcanbeincludedinapage.

* SamplesofFabric,Leather,etc.,ifabsolutelynecessarymaybeattached
evenlyinapageandfixed/pastedsuitablyandshouldbeplacedinAppendix
only.

Thecaptionoffigureshouldfollowsentencecase,centrealignedandplacedbelowthefigure.
Thecaptionoftableshouldbeatthetopofthetable,leftalignedandplacedabovethetable.

7.TYPINGINSTRUCTIONS

7.1General

This section includes additional information for final typing of the thesis. Some
information given earlier under 'Manuscript preparation' shall also be referred. The
impressions onthetyped/duplicated/printedcopies should beblack incolour. Corrections,
interlineationsandcrossingoutoflettersorwordswillnotbepermittedinanyofthecopiesof
thereport/thesisintendedforsubmission.Erasures,ifmade,shouldbeneatlycarriedoutinall
copies.Asubheadingatthebottomofapagemusthaveatleasttwofulllinesbelowitorelse
itshouldbecarriedovertothenextpage.Thelastwordofanypageshouldnotbesplitusinga
hyphen.Oneandahalfspacingshouldbeusedfortypingthegeneraltext.Thegeneraltext
shallbetypedinFontStyleTimesNewRomanandFontSize13.
Singlespacingshouldbeusedfortyping:

(i) LongTables
(ii) Longquotations
(iii)Footnotes
(iv) Multilanecaptions
(v) References

Allquotationsexceedingonelineshouldbetypedinanindentedspace,theindentation
being 15mm fromeithermargin. Doublespacing should beusedfortyping theBonafide
CertificateandAcknowledgement.

7.2Chapters

Theformatfortypingchapterheadings,divisionheadingsandsubdivisionheadings
shallbesameasgiveninTableofContents.

ThewordCHAPTERwithoutpunctuationshouldbecentred50mmdownfromthetop
ofthepage.Twospacesbelow,thetitleofthechaptershouldbetypedcentrallyincapital
letters.Thetextshouldcommence4spacesbelowthistitle,thefirstletterofthetextstarting
20mm,insidefromthelefthandmargin.

Thedivisionandsubdivisioncaptionsalongwiththeirnumberingsshouldbeleft
justified.Thecaptionsshouldstartat20mmfromleftmargin.Thetypedmaterialdirectly
belowdivisionorsubdivisionheadingshouldcommence2spacesbelowitandshouldbe
offset 20mm from the left handmargin. Within a division or subdivision paragraphs are
permitted.Theparagraphshouldcommence3spaces belowthelastlineofthepreceding
paragraphorcaption,thefirstletterintheparagraphbeingoffsetfromthelefthandmarginby
20mm.

8. NUMBERINGINSTRUCTIONS

8.1 PageNumbering

All pages numbers (whether it be in Roman or Arabic numbers) should be typed


withoutpunctuationontheupperrighthandcorner20mmfromtopwiththelastdigitinline
with the right hand margin. The preliminary pages of the thesis (such as Title page,
Acknowledgement, Table of Contents etc.) should be numbered in lower case Roman
numerals. The title page will be numbered as (i) but this shouldnot be typed. The page
immediatelyfollowingthetitlepageshallbenumbered(ii)anditshouldappearatthetop
righthandcornerasalreadyspecified.Pagesofmaintext,startingwithChapter1shouldbe
consecutivelynumberedusingArabicnumerals.

8.2NumberingofChapters,DivisionsandSubDivisions

Thenumberingofchapters,divisionsandsubdivisionsshouldbedoneusingArabic
numeralsonlyandfurtherdecimalnotationshouldbeusedfornumberingthedivisionsand
subdivisions within a chapter. For example division / subdivision 4 under division 3
belongingtochapter2shouldbenumberedas2.3.4.Thetitleforthedivision/subdivision
shallstartat20mmfromtheleftmargin,followingthenumberassignedtoit.
Every chapter beginning with the first chapter should be serially numbered using
Arabic numerals. Appendices included should also be numbered in an identical manner
startingwithAppendix1.

8.3NumberingofTablesandFigures

TablesandFiguresappearinganywhereinthethesisshouldbearappropriatenumbers.
Theruleforassigningsuchnumbersisillustratedthroughanexample.Thus,ifafigurein
Chapter3,happenstobethefourththenassign3.4tothatfigure.Identicalrulesapplyfor
tablesexceptthatthewordFigureisreplacedbythewordTable.Iffigures(ortables)appear
inappendicesthenfigure3inAppendix2willbedesignatedasFigureA2.3.Ifatabletobe
continuedintothenextpagethismaybedone,butnolineshouldbedrawnunderneathan
unfinishedtable.Atablecontinuedintothenextpageshouldhaveacaptionlike,Table2.1
(continued),placedcentrallyandunderlined.

8.4NumberingofEquations

EquationsappearingineachChapterorAppendixshouldbenumberedserially,the
numbering shall commence freshly for each Chapter or Appendix. Thus for example, an
equationappearinginChapter2,ifithappenstobetheeighthequationinthatChaptershould
benumbered(2.8),whilereferringtothisequationinthebodyofthethesisitshouldbe
referredtoasEquation(2.8).

9.BINDINGSPECIFICATIONS

Thesisshouldbeboundusingflexiblecoverofthickwhiteartpaper.Thecovershould
beprintedinblackcolourandthetextforprintingshouldbeidenticalasprescribedforthetitle
page.
