Assignment Due Date: June 17, 2015

1. Calculate the theoretical density of ThO2 in g/cm3 if the ionic radius of Th4+ is 0.110 nm and
the ionic radius of O2- is 0.140 nm.

2. NaCl has a rock salt structure and a measured density of 2.16 g/cm3.
a. Determine the unit cell edge length of this structure
b. How does the result compare with the edge length determined from ionic radii, shown
in the table below, assuming that Na+ and Cl- ions touch along the edges?

3. Calculate the fraction of lattice sites that are Schottky defects for CsCl at its melting
temperature (645 C). Assume energy for defect formation of 1.86 eV for CsCl.
4. The density and associated percent crystallinity for two polypropylene materials are as
follows:

(g/cm3) Crystallinity (%)

0.904 67.2

0.895 53.5

a. Compute the densities of totally crystalline and totally amorphous polypropylene.

b. Determine the density of a specimen having 76.7% crystallinity.

5. The number-average molecular weight of a poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene) alternating co-

polymer is 1,000,000 g/mol; Determine the average number of acrylonitrile and butadiene
repeat units per molecule.
6. The molecular weight data for some polymer are tabulated below. Compute the following:
a. The number-average molecular weight
b. The weight-average molecular weight
c. Calculate the molecular weight of the repeat units for all the polymeric materials
listed below.
d. If it is known that this materials degree of polymerization is 477, which one of these
polymers could it be?
