Introduction Advanced controller 0

Advancing your overhead network

Introduction
The Advanced Controller was designed to provide advanced overhead network
protection features in a reliable package. A package that is flexible enough to
function as a standalone pole mounted unit in a remote location or as part of a
complex automated system in a metropolitan substation. The result is a world-class
protection relay/switchgear controller setting the standard for tomorrow’s competitive
electricity distribution systems.

Performance
Complex protection algorithms and analytical tools are due to the high performance
Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Power quality measurement and analysis is also
possible and is based on real-time voltage, current and frequency data. In addition
to the traditional protection and measurement functions the ADVC also plays an
important role in analysing the network with real-time waveform capture.

Flexibility
Due to a modular design the Advanced Controller offers a simple upgrade path that
allows customers to adapt the controller to their evolving applications.
The customer compartment meets the requirements of a multitude of different
customer accessories, ready to expand the powerful features of the ADVC beyond
the horizons as and when it is required.

Reliability
The Advanced controller was designed to achieve optimum performance and
reliability, making use of the very latest available technology in microelectronics and
state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. A modular design boasting IP65
protection to all electronics, the field proven CAN bus system, protection on all ports,
The all-new Advanced Controller
a robust electronic design and the marine grade stainless steel cubicle are the main
contributing factors to the Advanced Controller’s reliability.
Advanced controller system condition monitoring tools warn the user when the
batteries need replacing or when the switchgear mechanism is faulty.

Communications
Open system interconnectivity is essential for modern era automation systems and
Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) are expected to integrate into an environment
filled with a variety of technologies, from old to new. The Advanced Controller
provides superior communication capabilities in the form of RS485, 10baseT
Ethernet, V23 and RS232 ports included as standard and protocols such as DNP3.
The RS485 and 10baseT Ethernet ports are tested up to 1kA, 15kV, include MOV
protection and are suitable for connection to external devices.

Modular Design
A marine-grade stainless steel cubicle houses the three main modules and customer
compartment of the Advanced Controller. The cubicle is ventilated to help cooling
and contains insulation against radiant heating. An extended operational
temperature range is achieved by using highly efficient components and a thermally
optimised design. For subzero temperatures down to -40°C an optional battery
heater can be added. The battery location on top of the power supply provides easy
access for maintenance.

Operator interface
The Operator Interface module is mounted in the door of the cubicle. Access is
through a hatch in the door or, when the door is open, by swivelling the interface
away from the door. The menu driven interface provides access to the system status,
event log, measurement, protection, automation and communication parameters. A
computer port is provided for local control, configuration and data retrieval using the
WSOS program.

Operator interface

Customer compartment
Located at the top of the cubicle is the large Customer Compartment. It provides
ample mounting space for modems, radios, Input/Output expanders and other
customer accessories. During installation it is possible to remove the accessory tray
from the cubicle, making installation and commissioning much easier.

Customer compartment

Control and protection enclosure

At the centre of the cubicle is the Control And Protection Enclosure (CAPE). The
sealed unit incorporates the switchgear controller and all the control, protection,
measurement and communication functions. All the connections are easily
accessible. Standard DB9, RJ45 and RJ11 terminations eliminate customised
communication cables making installation and commissioning very easy.

CAPE enclosure

Power Supply Unit

The Power Supply Unit (PSU) and its batteries are located at the bottom of the
cubicle. A built in, microprocessor controlled power supply provides uninterrupted
power to the switchgear, protection relay and communication devices. A customer
auxiliary power supply, used to charge the batteries, is connected to the PSU.

Power Quality Toolkit

# Current, Voltage, Power & Frequency Logging
# Separate total, positive and negative kWh logging
# Daily demand (in addition to Weekly and Monthly demand)
# Frequency logging
# Harmonics logging
# Supply outage measurement
5The Supply Outage Measurement feature utilises built-in recloser features to
record the number and duration of outages. These statistics are recorded in the
controller and are available to the Utility to help calculate SAIDI and SAIFI.
5The controller records the:
- cumulative total number of outages,
- cumulative total outage duration, and
- the time and duration of each outage event in the Event Log.
5These records are accessible to the user and can be retrieved using the operator
control panel, WSOS or a SCADA System.
# Harmonic analysis
5Harmonics 2 to 16 and the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) are calculated over a
80 ms period for 4 currents, 6 line-line voltages and 6 line-earth voltages.
5These harmonics are made available to the Panel and WSOS.
# Waveform capture
5Based on a user defined trigger, the ADVC captures and stores in flash memory
filtered & scaled raw data (10 x 3200 samples per second) of the 6 line-earth voltages
and 4 currents for a predefined time window either side of a user-defined trigger.
5The user can configure a pre and post trigger time ratio for data to be stored. This
defaults to 50% pre-trigger and 50% post-trigger.
