OUR VISION
People are searching for natural
resources at sea in support of
growing populations and
increasing standards of living.

To obtain access to these

resources our technology is
needed to work safely at sea,
from benign coastal waters to
extreme and harsh
environments far offshore.
MISSION
We provide core technology
that enables shipyards to build
safe and highly efficient
mobile offshore units and we
support end-users to make the
best use of these units.

FOOTING DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
A. Mix of hard soils & soft soils
B. Inclined soils
C. Previous footprints
D. Interference with seabed infrastructure
E. Leg retraction
F. Suitable for add-on

GustoMSC Proprietary Information - 2017

A. HARD & SOFT SOILS
Hard soils require:
A strong tip for initial leg to seabed contact
An inclined bottom to ensure central bearing below
spudcan

Soft soils:
Require a large area to reduce penetration
Require a small area to ensure retractability
Require a good jetting system (supply water and
remove suction below spudcan)

Hard soil Soft soil

B. INCLINED SOIL
Assuming similar spudcan height

Large footings:
Attract large eccentric support loads at small seabed
inclinations due to low bottom plate slope
Resulting leg bending moments cause:
RPD
Problematic spudcan leg chord connection
Locked-in bending moments in elevated condition

Small footings:
No disadvantages

D. INTERFERENCE WITH SEABED INFRASTRUCTURE
Considerations:

A large spudcan has a bigger area of potential contact

A small contact will penetrate more and may thus hit deeper placed items

In general: if a large rig has already visited the platform there is a high chance
any other rig can stand at the same location

Buried pipeline

E. LEG RETRACTION
Retraction is an uncertain operation, performed at a
critical time, since the hull has entered the water
and exposed to the environment.

Retraction is typically only an issue in soft soil

A large footing will:

Experience high suction
Be relatively shallow and have little soil on top,
however on a large area

A small footing will:

Experience low suction
Penetrate more and may have acquired more soil
resting on top, but on a smaller area

F. WHY SPUDCAN EXTENSIONS?
The spudcans are designed during the basic design phase such that they are optimally
suitable for the original design capacity and typical intended area of operation.

Spudcan extensions may be required if:

The original spudcans result in excessive penetration and / or insufficient leg reserve
The original spudcans result in insufficient safety w.r.t. punch-through
The original spudcans are not suitable to be installed on site specific soil conditions (e.g. rock,
soft clay)
The maximum design water depth is to be increased
The maximum design environment is to be increased
Any combination of the above

GustoMSC has designed a number of spudcan extensions for a wide variety of jack-ups.
Each extension is designed to either site specific conditions and/or client specific
requirements.

F. SPUDCAN EXTENSIONS
Spudcan extensions can be subdivided in three main types:

1. Permanent (welded) spudcan extensions

2. Temporary (detachable) spudcan extensions
3. Add-on spudcans

Examples of each spudcan extension type are presented on the next pages.

CONCLUSION
GUSTOMSC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
For a multipurpose jack-up the following parameters are driving the spudcan design:

High insensitivity to previous footprints

Easy to retract
Works optimally in both hard and soft soil conditions
Suitable for a spudcan extension or add-on
Can deal with soil inclinations
Interference with seabed

Results in:
Small area spudcan
Strong central tip
High bottom plate angle
Large volume jetting system
Applied to NG-series
