Delhi.Here,artistsdevelopedastylethatcanbe
characterizedasmoreindigenous,lessconcerned
withnaturalisticrealisminthehumanform,and
morewiththesymbolicqualitiesofthespiritual
figure.Mathuraartistscreatedotherkindsof
religiousimageryaswell.Itisprobablethat
Buddhistimagerywasinfluencedbythe
developmentofHinduandJainfigures,andthat
variouscommunitiesweredevelopingimagesof
devotionalfiguressimultaneously.
Averysignificantgapofseveralcenturiesexists
betweenthelifetimeofthehistoricalBuddha,and
thecreationofthefirstsurvivingimagesofthe
Buddhainstoneoranyothermedium.Thefirst
survivingBuddhistartinstonewasactually
createdpriortoimagesoftheBuddhahimself.

sophisticationandhighlevelofsculpturalexpertise
expressedinMauryastonesculptureimpliesthat
thesculpturaltraditionwasalreadyhighly
developedbythistime.Theimperialmightand
