Short answer type question (Write your answers in the given space only). There are 4 printed pages

PART I
1 1. Living cells need to be continuously protected from several dangers that arise either through the bodys own
metabolic activities or environmental conditions or both. With respect to this fact and using your knowledge of
General Biology, mention the precise role of each of the following organelles in providing protection to the
cell. (2x4=8M)
(a) Plasma membrane (b) Golgi apparatus (c) Endoplasmic reticulum (d) Peroxisomes

2 2. A hypothetical cell containing a 0.5M internal concentration of a certain salt is placed in a 0.1M solution of the
same salt. Should the cell require to take up more of this salt from the surrounding solution, mention:
(a) The precise name and principle of the transport method that the cell should employ to achieve this.
(1+2=3M)

(b) Mention why the efficiency of this transport process is related to mitochondrial activity of the cell. (2M)
3.
3 4. With respect to your knowledge of cellular respiration and photosynthesis,
(a) Mention the precise sub-cellular localizations of the following enzymes used in cellular respiration
(2x3=6M)
(i) Hexokinase (ii) Citrate synthetase (iii) H+/ATPase

(b) Mention the precise sub-cellular locations of the production of reduced co-enzymes in (i) respiration vs. (ii)
photosynthesis. (3M)

(c) Mention the precise sub-cellular location where these reduced co-enzymes are ultimately utilized in
cellular respiration vs. photosynthesis. Name the two final products obtained by the utilization of these
reduced coenzymes in cellular respiration. (4M)

4 In an experiment to study the kinetics of an enzyme, Dr. Xi added enzyme A to a substrate B and NAD+ in a
test tube and incubated the reaction in a buffer at pH 7.0 at 37 0C. Using this information, write a simple
chemical equation representing this aforementioned enzymatic reaction that converts substrate B to product
C. (4M)

5 In the adjoining diagram of the dipeptide, which bond would be hydrolyzed by dipeptidyl peptidase? (2M)

6 5. Write the specific step in which CO2 is fixed in the dark reactions of photosynthesis. (2M)

7 6. A spleen cell has a volume of 2000 m3. Its total membrane area, including the inner membranes lining
organelles as well as the cell membrane, is 80,000 m2. A cell in the pancreas that manufactures digestive
enzymes has a volume of 1000 m3 and a total membrane area of 15,000 m2. Which cell is probably more
efficient in carrying out activities that require extensive membrane surfaces? Why? (3M)

8 7. Write one example each of essential amino acid and essential fatty acid. (2M)

9 8. Dr. Yin and Prof. Wu performed an enzymatic reaction each. They both used the same amount of enzyme,
but while, Dr. Yin added 3 mM of the substrate, Prof. Wu added 10 mM. Assuming that the enzyme does not
become limiting for either reaction, explain whose reaction reaches to completion faster and why? (3M)
10 9. What is the term used to describe internal balance? Mention two main processes of life which affects the
internal balance in a human being. (3M)
