Procedure:

1. Configure NE to perform add-drop function on all installed tributary ports. Associate each
tributary with different VC-12 path within STM-N line signal. Do not enable trail trace
identifier.
2. Configure SDH test set as follows:
a. Set mapping type to VC-12 framed; PRBS test pattern 2x10-15.
b. Transmit test pattern in path under test.
3. Perform BER measurement (use 1min test period). Check that received signal at SDH test set is
error free.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all paths in the transmitted STM-N line signal.

2. Verifying network elements internal clock accuracy

Purpose:
Test the accuracy of the internal timing of the SDH equipment. To be performed in the NE where
external 2 MHz/Mbps clock is to be connected or where external reference clock is available.

Procedure:

1. Configure the network element clock to use internal.

2. Configure SDH test set as follows:
a. Set mapping type to VC-12 test channel; PRBS test pattern in the payload.
b. Use 2Mhz external primary reference clock.
3. Perform BER measurements. Verify that the SDH test set detects no alarms or errors.
4. Measure the frequency offset on the STM-N signal received by the test set.

3. Verifying protection switching

Purpose:
This is to check if network elements automatic protection switching complies with ITU-T standard of
50ms. To be perform where NMS computer is located.

Procedure:

1. Connect the test set to the PDH or SDH drop/insert port of the ADM. Loopback at the far end.
Create a VC-12 trail with path protection.
2. Select the transmitter PDH tributary interface rate or SDH tributary interface rate. Select the
required test pattern. Use Manual start/stop gating. Initiate the measurement.
3. Verify that the test set receives no alarms or errors.
4. Activate the protection switch using the NMS of by disconnecting the fiber from the working
section.
5. Measure and record the result for the service disruption time.

2. Configure the SDH test set as follows:
a. Set STM-N line rate; mapping type.
b. Ensure jitter generation is disabled.
c. Set receiver to measurement UIrms.
d. Select a 12Khz high-pass filter.
