Proposed Title No. 1

TITLE:

BIO-CENTER: A Proposed Ecological Research and Development Center for

Bio-Based Products Integrated in Central Luzon State University
Towards Sustainable Living Environment

REASONS/ JUSTIFICATIONS IN CHOOSING THE TOPIC:

The Philippines is committed to reducing emissions up to 70%, not only of carbon
dioxide but also other greenhouse gases produced according to the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Through the Central Luzon State University
(CLSU), as one of the premier institutions of agriculture and a pioneer of Regional Research
and Development Center of the country, is also committed to public service in developing the
environment that optimizes training, creativity and productivity, and supports a vibrant
cutting-edge research in new and emerging frontiers of science and technology such as bio-
based products that will spur innovations and solutions to address national and global issues
such as climate change and promotion of sustainability. Furthermore, as part of the Paris
Climate Agreement that deals with greenhouses gas emission mitigation, adaptation and
finance it supports to increase the ability to adapt on the adverse impacts of climate change
and nurture climate resilience and greenhouse gas emissions development in a manner that
does not threaten food production and ecological balance environment.

However, environmental issues occurring due to the usage of non-renewable and

fueled-based products generating greenhouse gases and carbon foot print that could lead to
possible extinction of resources and contribution to global warming and climate change,
moreover, problems on large scale of food waste (e.g. bones, certain organs etc.) and
agricultural crop residues (e.g. rice hull and straws, sugarcane trace and coconut husks and

shells) which are not 100% will be brought to compost pits and will turnover to another
bunch of wastes causing mountains of trash due to inorganic or non-biodegradable substances
causing pollutions, unwanted contaminations, bad smells and etc., problems on managing
wastes will be tough due to factors regarding its quality. Greenhouse gases and carbon
dioxide emissions of existing fueled-based products greatly effects on the temperature of a
building, especially on a controlled environment like research and development facility
wherein, machines of incompetent laboratories generate heat, itself adding to the temperature
increase inside the room making it uncomfortable to work in.

This study will focus on analyzing and designing an ecological established state for a
research and development center to promote construction of green and zero emission building
by using bio-based products and systems, and develop climate responsive architecture, in
solution to current buildings that generates adverse greenhouse gas release and energy
consumption due to relatively usage of fossil-based counterparts that attributes to the worlds
problem about climate change and global warming.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROWTH OF KNOWLEDGE IN

ARCHITECTURE:
This study will be expected to be familiarized on the identification, potential and
transitional use of bio-based products and systems in terms of building an ecological research
and development facilities that are made from bio-based products to stimulate improvement
on construction technologies and aims to solve global challenges, offering new potentials for
reaching demands on materials and buildings while reducing harmful impacts on the
environment. Thus, aid in designing low-emission and energy efficient buildings using local
bio-based products, integrating an appropriate, innovative, and well-integrated environment
for learning, training, research and development in an ecological and cost-effective manner.
The study will also offer interactive training and teaching laboratories, research and student
project laboratories, analysis and formulation laboratories and other specialty rooms for
experimentation and testing, which could contribute on the improvement of designing typical
school laboratories in a more ecological way, moreover, to provide laboratory systems design
criteria, considering laboratory equipment heat gains and proper coordination of laboratory
and building system components to avoid miscalculating special areas required for certain
facilities leading to unwanted contaminations, ineffectiveness of planning and design and
utility system problems. It could not only be architecturally advantageous but also
educationally and economically due to its potential new research findings, knowledge and

generated inventions of the facility that could help future generations in developing
sustainable living.
