We are privileged to host Ms. Aleema Khanum who is visiting Australia to raise funds for
one of very unique projects targeting young ones towards higher education. There is a
series of events planned by Pakistani community with Perth taking lead on Ist November.
If you have not booked your tickets yet, please do so immediately. For interstate events,
see details on p.2.

Our literary evening is now all set to go for seniors week 2017 with a mix of poetry, prose
and music. Please confirm your place by Wednesday so catering can be finalised. We will
start with refreshment at 6.15 so guests can meet and greet each other.
The first segment comprises readings by Natasha De Souza and Lisa Russell, Naheed Hayat
and poetry by Shahid Tirmazi and Hassan Gillani. The final segment is a combination of
light music and ghazals by Charndeep Kaur and Bilal.

And it is our 5th anniversary next weekend so we will be having a cake for sure to mark
five years of community engagement across Australia and Pakistan.

WA Community Crime Prevention Grant Update: we are waiting for communication from
WA Police community engagement team for dates regarding cricket match and afternoon
tea.

SYDNEY: BOOK LAUNCH

The Sydney launch of Rehan Alavis book Ek Ghazal Ek Kahani was held on Sunday 22 October 2017
at The Connection in Rhodes waterside with the presence of politicians, media personalities and
community leaders. Author/Journalist/Poet Rehan Alavi celebrated the publication of EK GHAZAL EK
KAHANI (Collection of authors prose and poetry). Book launch ceremony of Rehan Alavis book Ek
Ghazal Ek Kahani was held on Sunday 22 October 2017 at The Connection in Rhodes. The ceremony
was attended by large number of community members including politicians, media personalities and
community leaders. The event was started right in time and finished within deadline that has set a
bench mark for other event organizers to follow the tradition. The MC role was played by GEO news
renowned presenter Talib Haider who was later joined by famous poet Noshi Gilani. Overall the
function was a big success and community congratulate Rehan Alavi and his team for organizing such
a beautiful program in Sydney. Rehan Alavi is an executive Producer of SBS Urdu program AND
author and poet, who celebrated the publication of his latest, book EK CHAZAL EK KAHANI, a
collection of his prose and poetry dedicated to Australian diversity. Members of the community,
artists, politicians, friends, family and a number of SBS team members heard Rehans words come to
life in the form of song, speech and narration. The launch was attended by members of t he
community, literary and political figures, and a number of SBS managements.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION UPDATE:

With new laws come into effect in Western Australia a one meter distance is
to be kept from cyclists while driving so be mindful and take care on roads for
safety.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Congrats to Areesha Ateeq who was the finalist for Youth Awards last week for her
contribution to support victims of domestic violence. She is also our nominee on the
Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network and has strong leadership potentials in years to
come.

QUEENSLAND:
Since May, the 30-year-old Dr. Jalal Khan has been visiting the south-west Queensland
communities of Cunnamulla and Quilpie, as well as the western New South Wales town of
Bourke, to provide much-needed dental services.

"I think I'm more popular than I was on my wedding day," Dr Khan said.

"I get locals knocking on the doors there is usually a line of at least two or three people in
the morning when we are setting up.

"Throughout the day the mobile phone for the truck is ringing off the charts and I am trying
to squeeze people in, especially those that are in pain," he said while taking a rare break
from his surgery on wheels.
