Flow sleeves

1. General description
General description
This document describes the complete range of stainless-steel flow sleeves for all Grundfos
SQ, SQFlex, SP and SP-G submersible pumps.
The flow sleeves are available for both 50 and 60 Hz motors with direct-on-line or star-delta
starting. They are designed for both vertical and horizontal mounting and are supplied in
cardboard.
Applications
We recommend flow sleeves for the following operating conditions:
When the thermal load of the submersible motor is considerable because of these factors:
overvoltage
undervoltage
current asymmetry
dry running
overload
high ambient temperature
slow flow past the motor resulting in insufficient cooling, possibly due to installation in or
below the well screen (fig. 2) or in a tank.
poor cooling due to build-up of sand around or sediments on the submersible motor.
General description
When pumping aggressive liquids, choose material quality EN 1.4539 (AISI 904L).
The speed of corrosive action is halved for every 10 C drop in temperature.
Tests have shown that a flow sleeve can reduce the temperature of the motor by approx.
10 to 20 C and thus reduce the risk of burning or corrosion of the motor.
Pumped liquids
Flow sleeves can be used when pumping thin, clean liquids, not containing solid particles or
fibres that may attack the pump or flow sleeve mechanically or chemically. The water
should be free from any foreign bodies or solid particles which might wedge in and clog up
the clearance between motor and flow sleeve. If such foreign bodies or solids occur, we
recommend to install a strainer. See section Strainer, page 9.
Flow sleeves of EN 1.4539 (AISI 904L) can be used for aggressive liquids such as
seawater.
Liquid temperature
The liquid temperature should not exceed 60 C (see also Engineering Manual - Submersible
Pumping Systems). The warranty will be invalidated if the liquid temperature exceeds 60 C.

Function
The flow sleeve is fitted to the submersible motor so that the liquid passes close by the motor
on its way towards the pump suction interconnector, thus ensuring optimum cooling of the
motor. See fig. 5.
The flow sleeve is designed so that the flow velocity past the motor is minimum 0.5 m/s and
maximum 3 m/s to ensure optimum pump operating conditions.
Use this formula to calculate flow velocity:
Q 353
v = --------------------
2 2
[m s]
D d
Due to the special-design flow-through spacer ring (fig. 6, pos. 2) to be fitted around the
bottom of the motor, cooling is achieved already from the thrust bearing of the motor and up.
See section 6. Flow values.
As already mentioned, the flow sleeve can be used for both vertical and horizontal installation.
Supporting brackets are required for horizontal installation. See section Supporting brackets.
Construction
Product description
The flow sleeve is cut from a stainless-steel sheet and formed as a tube (fig. 6, pos. 1).
Besides the steel tube, a flow sleeve also consists of these parts:
A spacer ring (fig. 6, pos. 2) for mounting at the lower end of the flow sleeve to ensure
centring of the motor in the flow sleeve.
A seal ring (fig. 6, pos. 3) for mounting at the upper end of the flow sleeve. The seal ring
has a recess for the cable and cable guard, and it fits so tight around the pump that most of
the water sucked in passes through the flow sleeve, past the motor and up to the pump
suction interconnector.
Three clamps (fig. 6, pos. 4).

Accessories
The following accessories are available for flow sleeves:
strainer
supporting brackets.
Strainer
A stainless-steel strainer (fig. 7) can be fitted to the end of the flow sleeve
to protect the pump from sucking in large solids, leaves, etc.
to prevent the formation of a vortex. Due to the "flat" influx to the strainer, the design of the
strainer with multiple small holes prevents the formation of a vortex, which particularly
occurs in shallow water.
The strainer is designed so that it does not reduce the pump performance. However, we
recommend to check and clean the strainer regularly.

Supporting brackets
Accessories
When Grundfos submersible pumps with flow sleeve are installed horizontally, the pump
should be mounted on supporting brackets.
A set of supporting brackets consists of two or three components (depending on the pump) on
which the pump is placed. The pump is kept in place in the supporting brackets by means of
stainless-steel mounting brackets.
As the supporting brackets are specially designed for the pump/motor and flow sleeve profiles,
they ensure permanent and stable mounting.

4. Installation
Installation
Mount the flow sleeve on a submersible pump as follows:
1. Push the seal ring up over the motor or pump end and position it on the first pump chamber
or on the upper part of the pump suction interconnector.
2. Push the flow sleeve up around the motor and fix with the top clamp around the seal ring.
3. Single sleeve:
Position the spacer ring (fig. 6, pos. 2) in the flow sleeve bottom so it keeps the bottom of
the motor centred in the flow sleeve. Fix the spacer ring with a clamp (fig. 6, pos. 4).
Double sleeve:
Position the spacer ring (fig. 6, pos. 2) in the flow sleeve so half of the spacer ring is outside
the upper sleeve. Fix the spacer ring with a clamp (fig. 6, pos. 4). Then mount the lower
sleeve and fasten it to the other half of the upper spacer ring with a clamp. The second
spacer ring is positioned at the lower end of the lower sleeve for centring of the motor and
is fastened with a clamp.
4. When a strainer is used, push the flow sleeve and the seal ring 4-5 cm upwards so the
strainer can be fixed around the spacer ring with the bottom clamp.
In horizontal installation, position the pump with flow sleeve in the appropriate supporting
brackets.
For further details, see the installation and operating instructions (97759492) for flow sleeves
and supporting brackets.

The overseas kits are made for countries far away from the country where the flow sleeves are
produced. To reduce transport costs, we now offer overseas kits for all pump sizes. The kits
contain a seal ring, spacer ring and clamps. The customer then has to buy a stainless-steel
sleeve locally.
