Have students give both of these words the endings "ing", "s", and "ed"

Procedure/Activites
1. Write the words "obey, obeyed, obeys, and obeying" on the board
1. "obey" is the base word (underline the base word in each)
2. "obey" is a verb; the tense of the verb changes when you add inflected endings
3. "obey" is a vowel + y word; you not take away the y when you give it an inflectional ending
2. Write the word "reply" on the board
1. how do we add the "ing" ending to this word? (replying)
2. "reply" is a consonant + y word; how do we add an 's' ending to this word? (replies)
3. "reply" is a consonant + y word; how do we add an "ed" ending to this word? (replied)
3. Look at obey and all of its endings and reply and all of its endings
1. how did the endings change the tense of these words?
4. Write "enjoy" and "study" on the board
1. have one student volunteer to put the "ing", "s", and "ed" endings on "enjoy"
2. have one student volunteer to put the "ing", "s", and "ed" endings on "study"
5. Have students make four columns in their reading notebooks with the headings Base Word, -s, -ed, and -ing
1. Write "journey" and "copy" on the board
2. have students work with a partner to write these words with the correct endings in their chart
3. go over answers once everyone is done

2. this word has a consonant + y, so the word does change when you add the inflectional ending (drop the y and
make it an i) except for the -ing ending because the -ing ending never changes the word
5. Review poster with consonant + y and vowel + y rules
