The Connecticut Colony
The Connecticut Colony was one of the original 13 colonies
located on the Atlantic coast of North America. The original 13
colonies were divided into three geographic areas consisting of the
New England, Middle and Southern colonies. The Connecticut
Colony was classified as one of the New England Colonies. The
Province of Connecticut was an English colony in North America
that existed from 1636 until 1776, when it joined the other 12 of
the 13 colonies in rebellion against Great Britain and became the

The first settlement by Europeans in Connecticut was made on the site of the present Hartford in 1633, by a party of Dutch
from New Netherlands. In the same year a trading post was established on the Connecticut river, near Windsor, by
members of the Plymouth Colony, and John Oldham (1600-1636) of Massachusetts explored the valley and his reports led
