I. POPULATION
1. Average population
Average population is the average number of people for an entire period, calculated
by several the following methods:
If data is available at two time points (base and end of the short term, usually a year),
then use the following formula:
P 0 + P1
Ptb = 2
Where:
Ptb: Average population;
P0: Population at the base period;
P1: Population at the ending period.
If data is available at times evenly, then use the formula:
P0 Pn
+ P1 + .... + Pn-1 +
2 2
Ptb =
n
Where:
Ptb: Average population;
P0,1,...,n: Population at time points of 0, 1,..., n;
n: Number of equal time points.
If data are available at times unequal spaces, using the formula:
Total of males
Sex ratio of population (%) = 100
Total of females
4. Sex ratio of newborns
Sex ratio of newborns (also known as the sex ratio at birth) reflects the balance
of the sex of newborns in a period. Sex ratio of newborns is calculated as the average
number of boys per 100 girls who were born in the period:
B
CBR () = 1000
P
Where:
B: Total live births in the year;
P: Average population (or mid-year population).
Where:
Bx : Number of live births registered in the year of women aged (x);
x : One-year age interval;
Wx: Number of women aged (x) at the calculation mid-year.
Age specific fertility rates are accumulated from x =15 to x =49.
In fact, the total fertility rate is calculated by the abridged method. In case the
age specific fertility rates are calculated for 5-year age groups, index of (i) represents
the 5-years interval of age, such as 15-19, 20-24, ... , 45-49. Meanwhile:
7
Bi
TFR 5 1000
i1 Wi
Where:
Bi : Number of live births registered in the year of women in the age group (i);
i : Successive 5-year age interval;
Wi: Number of women in the same age group (i) at the calculation mid-year.
Factor of 5 in the above formula is applied for the average rate of successive
5-year age group so that the TFR will be commensurate with the age specific fertility
rates described in the above formula.
7. Crude death rate
Crude death rate is one of the two components of natural population increase.
High or low value of crude death rate can greatly affect the size, structure and
population growth rate. Crude death rate indicates that every 1000 people, how many
deaths are in the year.
D
CDR () = 1000
Ptb
Where:
CDR: Crude death rate;
D: Total of deaths in the year;
Ptb: Average population (or mid-year population).
5D0
5q0 = 1000
B
Where:
5q0: Under five mortality rate (other name as U5MR);
5D0 : Number of deaths under age 5 in the year;
B: Total of live births in the year.
10. Population growth rate
10.1. Natural growth rate of population
Natural growth rate of population is the difference between number of live births
and number of deaths to the average population during the reference period, or by the
difference between the crude birth rate to the crude death rate of population in the
period.
B-D
NIR = 1000 = CBR - CDR
Ptb
Where:
NIR: Natural growth rate of population;
B: Number of live births in the year;
D: Number of deaths in the year;
Ptb: Average population (or population at the 1st July) of the year.
Where:
NMR: Net-migration rate;
I: Number of immigrant in the year;
O: Number of out-migrants in the year;
Ptb: Average population (or mid-year population).
Or: NMR = IMR - OMR
Where:
NMR: Net-migration rate;
IMR: In-migration rate;
OMR: Out-migration rate.
12. Life expectancy at birth
Life expectancy at birth is a key statistics indicator of the Life table that represents
the prospect of the newborns who could live for how many years if the current death model
is continued maintaining.
T0
e0 =
l0
Where:
e0: Life expectancy at birth;
T0: Total number of year-persons of the newborns in the Life table
who will continue to survive;
l0: Number of persons who surviving to the age of 0 of the Life table
(the set of original newborns is observed).
Life expectancy at birth is one of the indicators calculated from the Life table.
14. Number of divorce cases in the reference period (usually a calendar year)
It is the number of cases which have been cleared up for couples to get divorce
under the Marriage and Family Law in that period or year. Number of divorce cases
does not include the cases of separate couple.
15. Singulate mean age at marriage
Singulate mean age at marriage (SMAM) is the average number of years that a
person of a given cohort would stay single before getting married for the first time,
with the assumption that this cohorts proportion of single by age is the same as the one
collected at the intercensal time point.
7. Labour productivity
Labour productivity is the indicator reflecting the working performance of
labour, usually measured by Gross Domestic Product to a worker on an average in the
reference period, usually a calendar year.
