Health, safety & environmental protection in Roseires project stage1

Policy Statement for Rosaries project stage 1:


1. We make the following Policy Statement for all health, safety and
environmental protection (HS&EP) matters in Roseires project stage 1
because to comply with a requirement of the Health and Safety at Work
etc Act. In doing so, we emphasize the importance which attach to the
health and safety of those who deliver Roseires project stage 1 activities
(including all civilians)and those who may be affected by Roseires
project stage 1 activities and to the protection of the environment. This
Policy is to be applied throughout Roseires project stage 1.
General duties:
2. We require that:
a. We minimize work-related fatalities1, injuries, ill-health and adverse
effects on the environment, and we reduce health and safety risks so that
they are as low as reasonably practicable.
b. Within the Sudan we comply with all applicable HS&EP legislation.
c. Overseas we apply International arrangements where reasonably
practicable and, in addition, respond to host nations relevant HS&EP
expectations.
d. Where Roseires project stage 1 has exemptions, derogations or dis-
applications from HS&EP legislation, we maintain Departmental
arrangements that produce outcomes that are, so far as reasonably
practicable, at least as good as those required by Sudan legislation.
e. Those of us in positions of management or command, from the
Roseires project stage 1 Board downwards, lead by example on HS&EP
as part of normal business and maintain a just culture where everyone is
empowered to contribute to HS&EP objectives.
f. We take reasonable care of the health and safety of ourselves and others
who may be affected by our acts or omissions at work, we protect the
environment and we co-operate with arrangements that are in place to
enable us to discharge the duties placed on us.
Governance:
3. The Roseires project stage 1 Board is to receive information on
HS&EP matters at each meeting, is to discuss issues arising and is to
review an Annual HS&EP Assurance Report.
4. As the Departments most senior official for HS&EP matters is to
ensure that effective management arrangements are in place to achieve
compliance with this Policy Statement, which may be amplified as
appropriate, drawing on advice as necessary across the Department.
5. Each Top Level of our company or other subcontractor and Roseires
project stage 1 Infrastructure Organizations to be the Senior Duty Holder
(SDH) for the safety of Roseires project stage 1 activities conducted in
his/her area of responsibility (AoR) in addition to his/her wider HS&EP
responsibilities.
6. Any commanding officer or manager who wishes to change
organizational arrangements or resources is to ensure that, before being
implemented, the proposed change is properly assessed and demonstrated
not to be detrimental to HS&EP and that implementation is subsequently
suitably managed.
7. The detailed organization and arrangements that amplify this Policy
Statement are to be set out in . (Roseires project stage 1 Health, Safety
& Environmental Protection).

Mission of Environmental Health and Safety:


Environmental Health and Safety (TEHS) promotes health, safety and
environmental protection by providing training, advice and other
compliance assistance.
TEHS provides leadership in developing and supporting high quality
programs that allow staff to protect themselves from potential health
hazards they encounter.
In addition, TEHS staff has the expertise needed to direct efforts toward
compliance with health, safety and environmental laws and regulations.
The goal of TEHS is to provide guidance to every manager, supervisor,
employee, and others of the project so that a safe, healthful and
environmentally sustainable environment is achieved and maintained.
TEHS provide permitting and compliance advisory services on all phases
of a demolition, construction or renovation project in the areas of:
1. Occupational Safety and Health
2. Public Health
3. Fire Safety
4. Environmental Protection
TEHS maintains relationships with regulatory agencies on behalf of the
company to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and
can connect the project with them. We also regularly engage and
supervise outside safety and environmental contractors and maintain a list
of qualified safety and environmental sub-contractors with experience at
our company.
Occupational Safety and Health
Occupational Safety and Health staff will compliance with OSHA
regulations.
Environmental Management
Our company Environmental Management staff will compliance with
Sudan Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Environmental
Protection, Water Resources Authority and municipal regulations.
Fire Safety:
Fire Safety staff will compliance with National Fire Protection
Association, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and
Sudan regulations.
Purpose of Standard:
The policy of our company is to provide for the protection of its staff,
visitors, facilities and surrounding environment through the development
and implementation of a comprehensive safety, health and environmental
protection program.
The purpose of this Standard is to provide a safe environment for
company's project employees, visitors and construction workers in any
area impacted by maintenance, renovation or new construction projects.
Safety, health and environmental protection programs will implemented
by our company to protect life, property, and the environment and
comply with federal, state and local regulations.
The major objectives of the company Safety, Health and Environment
Standard are to:
1. Protect employees, visitors, property, and the environment from
hazards.
2. Operate a safe and healthful construction site free from recognized
hazards.
3. Comply with all safety, health, environmental regulations and Sudan
policies.
4. Maintain an effective health and safety program by assigning tasks to
managers, supervisors, and employees.
5. Cooperate with building occupants and others involved in the work
area to maintain a safe and healthful workplace.

Worksite Access:
We will provide controls to restrict unauthorized persons to enter the
work zone and to ensure that entry requirements are clearly posted at all
access points to the construction site. Signs would indicate the personal
protective equipment must be worn by all persons and at all times.
Fire Protection, Alarms and Suppression Systems
a. We will hold Hot Work as welding, soldering or torch work safely with
enough fire protection.
b. Fire Suppression and Fire Alarm systems.
c. Firefighting equipment will be conspicuously located, readily
accessible at all times, will be periodically inspected, and will be
maintained in operating condition.
d. Each employee will train to know the alarm system at the worksite so
they, and the local fire department, can be alerted during an emergency.
Materials Storage and Handling
General Storage
a. All materials stored in tiers will be secured to prevent sliding, falling,
or collapse.
b. Aisles and passageways will be kept clear and in good repair.
c. Storage of materials will not obstruct exits.
d. Materials will be stored with due regard to their fire characteristics.

Flammable and Combustible Liquids


a. Flammable and combustible liquids will only be stored in approved
containers and in appropriate quantities for the job site use.
b. Conspicuous and legible signs prohibiting smoking will be posted in
service and refueling areas.
c. Flammable liquids will be dispensed through grounded and bonded
containers.

Lighting
Construction areas, ramps, corridors, offices, storage areas including all
outdoor work locations will have a minimum light level of: 5 foot-candles
(50 lux) for general areas, 10 foot-candles (100 lux) for shop areas and 30
foot-candles (300 lux) for office areas.

Medical Services and First Aid


a. A person trained to render first aid will be available at the worksite.
b. Where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious
corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of
the eyes and body will be provided within the work area for immediate
emergency use.
