South Africas government is a parliamentary and constitutional democracy


When the National Party took power in 1948, apartheid was the new policy
In 1950 the communist party was banned, ANC starts civil disobedience following
Nelson Mandela
In 1960 the ANC was banned after 70 black demonstrators were killed
In 1961 Nelson Mandela restarted ANC, and in 1964 was sentenced to prison for life
Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd assassinated in 1966
Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after spending 27 years in prison &
ANC is unbanned
ANC wins first non-racial elections in 1994 and Nelson Mandela becomes president
Economics
Largest economy and richest country

Unemployment due to level of skill which results in less income

Government plans minimum wage to reduce poverty

Industry and mining have an impact with the economy

Challenges arise for the government pertaining unemployment

The main religion of South Africa is Christianity.

It was brought over to South Africa by a group of white people whose goal was to have a resupply port

for their ships.

Later on missionaries who called themselves The Moravian Brethren arrived with a few other

missionaries whose goal was to teach people who dont believe in Christianity about Christianity.

They thought lesser of those who didnt share the same beliefs.

The second most common religion in South Africa is Islam but this only makes up 1.5% of the population.

During apartheid black artists werent given much opportunity to make art, or display it somewhere
From early 1930s to late 1940s famous artist Gerard Sekoto brought a different perspective to the South African art
world
Sekoto was the first black artist to have their work bought by the Johannesburg Art Museum
During the late stages of apartheid artists started to put out work of things like police brutality, and resistance art
came into being
