Towhomitmayconcern,
Janelleisauniqueperson.SheisoneofthemostcaringandcharismaticstudentsIhaveworked
withintheMACprogram.Becausesheisapositiveinfluenceonothers,shehasbeenamodel
forhercolleaguestoemulate,andshehashadatremendousimpactonthecultureofhercohort.
Sheiskindandgenerous,quicktofindhumorwhenappropriateandsympatheticwhenothers
needhersupport.
Duringherstudentteaching,JanelletaughtSpanishIIIclasseswhichwerecomposedofmostly
sophomoresandjuniors.Shewasverycomfortableinfrontofherclassesandwellpreparedwith
avarietyoftechniquestoaddressthediverseneedsofherstudents.Sheplannedlessonsto
provideexperiencesforherstudentsthataddressedthecomplexandvariedstandardsofthe
worldlanguagescurriculumincluding:learningaboutgrammaticalstructures;developing
fluencyinreading,writingandspeakinginSpanish;andlearningaboutSpanishcultures
throughouttheworld.IamimpressedwithbothJanellescontentknowledgeandherskillin
leadingstudentstothoroughunderstandingsofthecontentsheteaches.Sheengagesstudentsin
challenginglearningexperienceswhichfulfillhighexpectationsforachievingfluencyin
Spanish.
Janellewasanexcellentintern.Sheformedproductiverelationshipswithherstudentsandthe
teacherswithwhomsheworked.Becauseshewasrequiredtoteach90%ofherlessonin
Spanish,Janellehadtheaddedchallengeofensuringthatallofherstudentsunderstoodthe
contentbeingtaught.Shewasabletouseavarietyoftechniquesduringherstudentteaching.
OnelessonthatIthoughtwasparticularlysuccessfulwasherlessononlearningtorecognize
grammaticalstructures,inthiscasethesubjunctiveandtheindicative.Insteadofsimplygiving
herstudentstherulesthatgoverntheuseofsubjunctiveandindicativegrammaticalstructures,
Janellestartedthelessonbygivingstudentstwosituations,oneinwhichthesubjunctiveofthe
unknownwasusedandoneinwhichtheindicativewasused.Afterconsideringthesituations,
studentswereaskedtocreateahypothesisforwhyandwhenthesubjunctiveoftheunknown
wasrequired.Indoingthis,Janellehelpedherstudentsgenerateandthenclarifyknowledgeina
waythatenabledthemtounderstandandconfidentlyuseadifficultgrammaticalstructure.
Althoughlearninganewlanguagerequiresalotofmemorizing,Janellealsoengagedher
studentsinactivelythinkingaboutlanguageduringherclasses.
Sheisverygoodatdifferentiatinginstructionsothatherlowerperformingstudentssucceededin
learningthecontentofthecoursessheteaches.Sheunderstandstheimportanceofactivating
priorknowledge,settingaclearpurposeforlearningandhelpingstudentssynthesizethecontent
thatisbeingstudied.Sheknowsthatsomeofherstudentswillstruggletolearnanewlanguage
whileotherswilldevelopfluencyinreading,writing,speakingandlisteningquickly.Janelletries
tohonortheuniquedevelopmentalneedsoflearnersandfeelsanobligationtoprovide
instructionthatmoveseachstudentforwardintheirlearning.Shedoesthisbyinvestigatinga
widevarietyofinstructionaltechniquesdesignedtoaddressliteracydevelopmentandbykeeping
informedabouttheresearchthatpertainstoeffectiveinstruction.
Janellehasproventobeaveryresponsiblestudent,committedtofulfillingtherigorous
requirementsmandatedforcertificationbytheStateBoardofEducationandtheUniversityof
Michigan.Sheisanextremelyconscientiousstudentandworkshardtodevelopexpertiseinthe
teachingofsecondarystudents.Sherealizesthatjoiningtheteachingprofessionrequires
acceptingtheroleofalifelonglearnerandunderstandsthatbeinganeffectiveteacher
necessitatesconstantresearchintoinnovativemethodologyandthelearningneedsofher
students.
MyobservationsofJanellehaveshownhertobecommittedandpersistentinherstudiesand
dedicatedtoachievingexcellenceinherteaching.Youwillfindherdependableand
knowledgeable.Sheisthoughtfulandconsiderateandwillbeanexcellentadditiontoyour
educationalcommunity.
