Dear Mrs. Beagle,

I appreciate this wonderful opportunity to be a part of your classroom. Im thrilled to receive the guidance
you offer in becoming an effective teacher and am looking forward to gaining practical experience along
the way.

A little about me: I was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, with my younger brother, Jaeden, my
dad, Calvin, and my mom, Tracy. In my free time I enjoy camping, boating, snowboarding, hockey,
football, gymnastics, and reading. Some of my favourite books are Flowers for Algernon, The Stranger,
Harry Potter (Series), and Othello. I went to George Davidson Elementary School and graduated from
Crescent Heights High School in 2013. After graduating, I enrolled at the University of Lethbridge in a
double degree program, which I am now in my fourth year of, majoring in biological sciences and science
education. My main academic interests are in the fields of physiology, neuroscience, and philosophy.

I think my decision to pursue teaching blossomed out of two areas. First, I have an appetite for learning
and I love the subjects that I study. I was not the type of person that wanted to simply get through math,
physics, or biology. Rather, I had fun exploring these subjects, and what career could be better than one
that allows me to toil with them all day long? Second, during high school I became aware of the true
impact a teacher can have on a students success and demeanour in a subject area. I was initially
indifferent towards math, but my enthusiastic math 10-1 and 20-1 teachers managed to instill in me a
newfound appreciation for the subject, allowing me to achieve much higher grades in that subject than I
ever had before. Reflecting on this, I knew that, if I became I teacher, I could someday not only be the
difference between as students success or failure in a subject, but also the difference between their
appreciation or hatred for it. During this practicum, I hope to build confidence in my ability to teach.
Furthermore, I hope to build a variety of abilities ranging from: assessment strategies, lesson planning,
classroom management, and relationship building.

I feel confident coming into this practicum with some public speaking skills. In high school, I participated
in a few drama productions. Furthermore, in university, I presented several papers I wrote at
undergraduate conferences. Due to my last four summer jobs, I also feel quite comfortable working
around kids. In the former two years, I worked at the Medicine Hat Womens Shelter as a summer camp
coordinator, where I was responsible for planning activities, budgeting for those activities, implementing
those activities, and teaching personal and relationship skills. In the latter two years, I worked at Sylvan
Learning Centre in Medicine Hat as an instructor, where I was responsible for tutoring kindergarten to
grade twelve math and science. I hope the skills I have gained through these experiences will help me be
an asset in your classroom over the next month.

Sincerely,

Kolton Krein
