The corridors of my mind

Thoughts of a sceptic bastard...

About the author

I was born on Tuesday, 15th January 1980, at St. Luke's Hospital, Malta (EU). I grew up in a family of
four in a town named Birkirkara, and, lived there for most of my life with the exception of occasional
travel. Although I do not know my date of death as of the time of writing, I am sure that this will be
published on my tombstone eventually.

I was educated at St. Francis School, Birkirkara (primary education), St. Aloysius' College, Birkirkara
(secondary education) and at other schools for post-secondary and tertiary education, including the
Institute of Financial Services, NCC Education (based in Manchester, UK) and the London School of
Economics and Political Sciences (based in London, UK). My main areas of academic specialisation
are Information Technology and Management. Experential learning remains strongly bound in my
long-term memory, and I learn by doing, perceiving and understanding.

My career history and work experiences are available on my Curriculum Vitae, and, the most
prominent roles are available online at http://mt.linkedin.com/in/jonathancamilleri/, there is little I
would write home about.

I had been diagnosed of Asperger's disease and find my tendency to prefer creative tasks very odd
considering that my mental habits limit me to have repetitive thoughts and I also have learning
issues that make me feel as if I learn slower than others do, however ironically through my senses I
do not see much that is wrong with me that I cannot find a comparable behavior in others, as I
observe human behavior, thus my skepticism is founded in doubts about academic frameworks
being a statistical guide not providing enough information to understand the risks involved. I feel
that I cannot step out of my psychology as I am afflicted with a trauma, and, this appears to exclude
me from intellectual committees in society whose eligibility criteria are defined by the
administrators, who are themselves not very interested in the immediate relevance of conventions
to their policies as they appear to work within the context of their own silo.

I believe that communication is one of the most repetitive problems, for those who like to write, as
history keeps repeating itself yet, some problems that could have been avoided keep recurring, and,
are these the result of our lack of thinking?

About my hometown
Birkirkara is a city in central Malta, with a population exceeding 20,000 inhabitants (March 2013).
The Republic of Malta is an independent sovereign state otherwise known as the Republic of Malta,
and, Birkirkara is one of the largest towns within the Central Harbour area, although the capital city
is Valletta. It is amongst the most interesting cities in the world where commerce and road
infrastructure feel like they have a heavy impact on us in terms of dust and noise, however other
cities have a different cultural and archological impact that makes them appear to be more
outstanding in the eyes of tourists.

About my family name

Camilleri is a common surname in Malta, and, to a lesser extent in Italy, and, the surname has been
borne by many personalities including writers, sport professionals, diplomats, singers, a senior
managers leading Philip Morris International, philosophers, actors, and, media professionals. It is
listed on search engine Google as the third topmost surname thus it seems that the human race is
quite lacking of originality in its naming and the registration of such naming.

Chapter 1: Ontology and epistemology...what fuels my thoughts?

I was brought up in an urban setting, and throughout my life I have attended privately funded
education. I am business minded, sceptical, and, consider myself to be rational, but nonetheless not
immune to emotional bias, as I am empathetic, and, I consider myself quite skilled in dialogue with
people, except in cases where people are deceiving me out of intuition, which is one of the skills
brought about by hacktivists and marketing agents, as then engage in a propensity to sell any idea
that comes across as a feasible business idea. Till this day I do not know what my blood group is, the
information has not been provided by the hospital and the clerks are very fussy on signatures and
having forms filled in the right way, I am afraid I will remain neglected of this information until I fill in
the forms they require me to fill in.

Nonetheless, whilst we are aware that regulations are meant to guide us, we still have a right to
object to a legal basis or a legal principle, hoping that our voice is amongst those heard and upheld
within a fair system, without there being a clear and unifying definition of what constitutes fairness
within an environment that has been engineered by experts in administrative policy. The challenge
is that they appear to have written these rules and give us the impression that they are set in stone,
using careful wording to convince us that these are what we must do, in a system that is governed
by rules, expectations and a world where it is always the individual responsibility to adhere to rules
that are written by someone sometime in the distant past. Empirical evidence and coherence to
context is thus not gauged in the right level of detail and this is quite true of many systems that I
have come across and that I have analysed. Poppins does acknowledge that social theory can be
analyzed through generations of historic studies, whilst politicians talk about populism almost as if
the ones they represent are not part of the polity that elected them to power, during a good part of
their representation, almost as if their speeches were intrinsically inspired rather than inspired
collectivistically, and, thus we have realized that democracy is a necessary good or a necessary evil,
depending on the extremisms adopted by political groups of different ideologies.

I consider myself as a nihilist and being firm in my philosophical belief this leads me to struggle and
gasp for fresh air as I try to influence society to have the same vision as I do, with little success I have
to write, unfortunately.

Chapter 2: The politics of I...

Some have asked me what my motivation is in life, and, frankly, having compared myself to Peter
Pan, and, someone who wants to travel the world, I have not really made radical changes to my
philosophy of life, but have nonetheless become more prudential in the way I have challenged
authorities, societies, and raised very critical political aspects. I have been asked to leave companies
because I am a person who is not afraid of criticizing in a society that appears to be conservative and
to present itself as classist and certainly not devoid of being discriminatory. Notwithstanding that
our teachers have presented us with a philosophy that advocates free thinking, it is our actions
which appear to contradict these values, which some may label as childish, but in any case I still
consider to be morally and ethically viable. It is considered unfair malpractice where organizations
phish for information at job interview stage or shortly after hiring, this in itself creates a bias in
occupational psychology, and, unfortunately such practice happens over a span of years, typically
even when references are asked for. Thus regulation is strong when lies are detected, but not all
complaints and causes of unfairness are met with coherent and predictable decision making, where
the avoidant position is considered safest to take during legal procedures and I find this approach
conservatively prudent and conflicting with ones fundamental rights.

I am a global pacifist, and my consciousness is bound by my imagination where I hope that some day
reality will be closer to what we originally envisaged, in a world that is not devoid of terrorism, war
and hostility. Hostility can be institutional, bureaucratically induced or else arise out of individual
confrontation.

John Lennon, Imagine, whose official website is available at
http://www.johnlennon.com/.

I have many objectives as I try to write my dreams in this book, and, these span ideas I have had over
my life, and, dreams that were left falling short of realization, for different reasons including lack of
resources, capability and perceptions influenced by structural fallacies. The obstacles are thus easy
to qualify and slightly more intricate to quantify particularly as I am one who believes that the theory
of money ought to be capsized, in view of the wealth distribution unfairness documented in
sociology textbooks where social fallacies have proved themselves a difficult risk for many
governments since the establishment of governance in its various forms, including Kingdoms,
monarchs, communities and formal systems of governance. Policy-making is a form of governance
and policy making conflicts with fairness doctrine and principles of justice, whilst anarchy leads to
deviance, crime and breaches or conflicts with various laws, where policy-makers write their position
and little beyond this.
We were labelled stupid by a lawyer on television, this is taking advantage of our anxiety as we wait
through legal procedures, and, this was published on social media as well, people had a laugh about
it, as they were meant to learn something new about a legal procedure that we were already
familiar with, thus threatening us with policy constitutes only negative re-inforcement where the
bias is not necessarily fair and respectful of our right to be considered innocent until proven guilty
and such has been subject even to decisions that were appealed, therefore the legal system is a trap
that is unable to provide clear and ubitiquitous statements of position.

Having set my goals, the obstacles are day to day societal needs that include being financially
restrained, and, obliged to follow the regulations of other systems in other to borrow or obtain
resources legitimately. Social upbringing has influenced my lonely thoughts, and, personal
philosophy does revolve around a reductionist and risk-averse outlook, thus upbringing and
education has crushed many of my dreams with systematically instituted limitations and
dependencies over which I have little control, and, the control of which might be too dreamy to be
able to design or architect with my fragile human brain, thus I have dreamed of the artificial human
brain, which in theory will think on its own, although in practice we are still coding along the lines of
mathematical verifications and algorithms.

Nonetheless this book is not an academic description of machine learning but an outlook of my
dreams and the high level designs that I hoped to realize throughout my thoughtful writings that I
thought were relevant to the rest of the world for the occastion that I am required to leave, in a
lifeless state, as we have not yet proven re-birth as being scientifically proven. Many systems fail to
hold together, democracy is an example of the failure of the people to achieve legitimate influence
over political leaders, we are merely given the impression that we are influencing, however we are
grateful when we are offered the opportunity to voice our concerns.

Our turn to vote in the coming election represents our will of which representative will voice our
concerns to the House of Representatives, however beyond this, executive decisions are not taken
by populists but by people who have been delegated the administrative function to take executive
decision.

In my early-age views of an anarchist who was opposed to any form of control, this hierarchy was
totally unacceptable as well and the analogy of feeling like a rat in a cage when caught within the
walls of a structure with regulations and bye-regulations left me with a very restricted voice and
there thus is a limited capability to influence ones own destiny beyond one that appears to have
been structured for us to choose in a society based on consumerism, at least this is my worldview so
far. I have since then had different political views that do not necessarily fall within the existing
political associations, and even though I have little choice as I am faced with structured
questionnares every five years, I do my utmost to express my views in the most liberal manner that
can outline the most profound of pain hoping that policies are drawn up to mitigate these societal
risks.

I have studied politics at length over the last few years as I wanted my intelligence and my writings
to be influenced by the widest possible journalistic and political thoughts in an attempt to balance
my arguments as being objective, inquisitive and independent of bias, although escaping the shadow
of bias is almost an impossible feat to achieve.
Politics somewhat seems to have the same level of interest as opium has in the mind of the addict, it
gives us the impression that we are participant in choices, but nevertheless the sceptic remains
questioning how well reality is supporting the idealism proposed by the objectives as any good
management student would do.

It results that the job seeker depends on a job offer or on another form of reward mechanism, in
order for them not to be materially deprived out of subsistence makes them dependent on a system
that obliges them to feel part of the system that holds the glue of society together and thus the
problem of systems engineering in the wider sense of society become a very intricate matter of
corporate governance with its laws, regulations, practices and changes in policies that are not
necessarily tied to indirect influence, as proponents and sociologists have proposed various theories
and descriptions of systems that support the fabric of society and its technological frameworks, that
has as its basis science thus laying the grounds for processes, operations and sequences to be
specified quite specifically when we are preparing documentation.

We are probably brought up in some environment that resembles a home and some are lucky
enough to have a family that establishes the basis of one's cultural identity. We have to go to
school, and, eventually we try to seek to work for a living. We socialize and exchange views as we
interact with other people using all the senses available to ourselves and trying to sleep comfortably
from gaps between one dream and another and we define this as our conscious life. Most of us
have neighbours (whilst empathizing those who are lonely as I remember reading about a fictitious
character named Robinson Crusoe a tale written in 1719 by Daniel Defoe. Robinson Crusoe was
enslaved and endured imprisonment after fleeing to an island and converting a colored brother to
Christianity fearing cannibals years before the fundamental charter of human rights was drawn up1),
no matter how far they might be and most of us interact with shopkeepers, school masters,
managers, listen to speeches made by mayors and other politicians listening to the substantial parts
that appear to coincide with our senses and views and we react to our perceptions continuously,
probably forgetting what we did last summer as we hardly remember what we ate last week in
detail, unless we write it down because our nutritionist has put us on a strict diet or else we have a
good reason to take notes. Most of us have goals in life, some of us feel helpless and disabled, and,
we might write down these goals as a way to motivate ourselves simply because nobody else will
bother to understand our needs, them being highly personalized, individual and self-centred.
Societies and entities have expectations of our time , resources and we might work regularly
contributing towards a larger goal that is met through a carefully organized structure that is good
enough for the needs of the objectives of that organization and usually appearing to interact with
other entities, such as when we are communicating on a business-to-business level in a structured
manner.

We appear to forget our individual identity and leave our dreams back to the place where we sleep,
and, we engage in another role where we are made to follow different sets of regulations falling
within the objectives of the organization that has planned out these mission statements, regulations
and procedures. If we were conservative, we would avoid making questions, as giving rise to
unnecessary organizational democracy might lead our boss to consider our termination of
employment.

We might be deviant to conservatism and engage in behaviour that appears to voice our concerns,
such as when we protest against a regulation, typically if there is a deviance between our culture
and the regulations being brought about. Different regulators have divergent approaches to
bringing about change, and, it does not really depend solely on one's personality as our personality
is one that takes on different roles and our personality is one that is influenced by changing pictures
that revolve around us in visual or other format that gives rise to our creativity being stimulated,
perhaps.

We might feel that we want to protect ourselves and our members of family or even members of
our neighbourhood, at times giving rise to behaviour that is considered deviant or even criminal by
rule of law.

We say that we are only human, a standing up version of the ape, and, that we will always learn
through mistake, and thus we question whether repenting is the ideal way that religion, penalty,
penitence or jail makes us repent and what lesson do we learn from our mistake, actually?

What ethical or religious moral reasoning ought we follow is it one we are indoctrinated with or is
our common sense one that prevails educated goodness?

Is the lack of education one that implied lack of education and what has it brought about so far?

Chapter 3: My business ideas...

I am an entrepreneur, my first business suggestions were discussions with my father, an

experienced and seasoned plastering and maintenance professional, with primary level of
education.

Listing all my ideas might take up some space here, however along the years I have written
diary notes and blog posts, hoping that my ideas will someday be a profitable instrument
that I can organize and co-ordinate.

My projects venture in various industries most of which I have worked for, thus there is no
originality or innovation that I am yet proposing as I am still one who has not reached the
doctorate level in academia, one of my biggest disappointments in life.

I feel under-qualified, under-accredited, practically numb and dumb, and, this is a

disappointment that the education system has instilled upon me, unfortunately2. I am very
skeptic that my plans will turn to reality in my life, since based on my history of successful
plans I have a very pessimistic view of the possibility of realizing my entrepreneurial goals,
since I am very limited by lack of resources, capital and the dependencies are so sparse that
risk management seems like an onerous task that is not quite fitting into the standard
organisation charts that I learnt in business school, thus, I feel compelled to do more
research hoping to find all the answers to my questions even those lurking in what I think is
my fantasy, but is really a recollection of books I have read, and, experiences I have been
through so far.

what are they?

Well, I have listed them in various websites, they include import/export and other forms of
business ventures:

what makes them successful?

how will my business ideas improve humanity, or are they just complementing the current
system? how can they be improved to create artificial wealth?
why all this laziness? banks, venture capitalists, paranoids etc
Nobody appears to want to read and appraise my essays and proposals, but why am I a
boring person?

Chapter 4: My political ideas...
how will the world become a worse place than it is?

We tend to believe that economics gives us the foundation of making rational decisions by
which we create budgets, plan the future, forecast, and, try to make sense out of an
otherwise chaotic world. Yet, even though sociologists as early as Karl Marx accurately
outlined the fallacies of Capitalism, we have not yet evolved to become a globalized society.

What will then happen when we think about moving to other planets?
Will humanity aim to destroy itself, as it has done for the history of mankind?

We are just human beings, we just want to live, in freedom, without paying taxes that lead
us nowhere, and, without having our lives pervaded and invaded by arrogant and ambitious
managers, whose commission is only based on productivity measures...

We do appreciate the contribution that the industry has made to our civilization, however, if
the benefits are not outweighing the consequential damages, we will naturally prefer to do
away with them.

The human has found a way to travel to other planets and to observe through planetariums
the materials and the life on other planets, and, even the lack of life as matter boils down to
particles and black matter that finds its definitions in astro-physics. Will at some point the
human want to move to another planet, because the divorce is the first step towards an
independent living in times of crises, for example, moving away from dust, emissions and
fumes could mean creating a habitable environment in other places on the galaxy and in
order to enable us to understand how the universe is glued together and how the structure
can be adapted, we need to understand how to apply matter to practice, create the
necessary infrastructures and eventually laws and policies to guide us, as the human would
run to a state of anarchy if politics were to be so liberal that there are no limits to our
imagination, as sometimes we would like.

Many people worry about whether technology will replace the human, I ask, whether it is
the case to worry about the promise of convenience or whether you are simply planning to
tire yourself until retirement age, at which point you might want to start planning about
active ageing, and, therefore cost and benefit as an economic means of measure of success
are only a gauge that serve to underpin further infrastructure that can be created to support
our living needs, should we remain able to support its operation.

What form of governance would be most beneficial to our own world-view of political
matters and what bothers us mostly that we would like to improve?

What changes would we like to happen that are under the control and influence of others
and what changes are there that we are able to control and influence ourselves as self-
reliant beings?
will we have to flee to Mars?
the end of the world...do we care?
the environment, ozone layer, the 'not-give-a-fuck-about-anything-except-money' capitalist

Social life in Malta is quite a variety as there are many places to visit, the rest of the world
appears to pale in view of our little island not just being a naval base but a strategic jewel
within the Mediterranean Sea where ships, yachts, and, other vehicles harbor, berth and
migration flows leave tourists and workers along with new business on our island.

Tourism is a considerable proportion of our gross domestic product.

People here speculate and have attracted the interest even of giant social media providers
as to our take-up of social media platforms and web technologies, where the digital
economy appears to be a relevant portion of services that makes us attempt to be
competitive within the global context. It is disappointing to realize that at the line
management level such supervision is made up of narcissism, attitude and arrogance,
instead of constructive ideologies, and, this is actually a form of management that appears
to blanket out the wider aspects of management, as it focuses on its administrative duties
and neglects at times recognition for our fundamental rights by asking us for permission to
override them, such is not fair and just, in my opinion.

Chapter 8: Laws

The rule of law is an interesting way of looking at society, lawyers attempt to create regulations for
society to follow and the good old praxis reads ignorantia juris non excusat, thus, your forgetfulness
is not an acceptable excuse for breaching the law, this ought put a lot of people under pressure
when faced with regulations. Each legal jurisdiction has its own laws and each of these is
interpreted through policies that may conflict between one another, where the interpretation of one
may be appealed to be reviewed by another. Some jurisdictions are reputed to have a stricter form
of regulation that favors one party and not the other, and, experience indicates a degree of lacking
coherence in the study of law.

I tried to become a lawyer but I am still waiting to be accepted by the University of Maltas Law
Faculty, nonetheless my only interest in law is to break it, so obeying the law requires that it is
clarified in writing in advance, so I am sure to make sense out of it before I agree to anything written
by someone else. This is my defiant espirit de rebel, which grew up with my character and never
seems to disappear from my psychology, thus a matter of interpretation that influences the way I
interpret law, policy or statement, and I commonly claim that I am able to read between the lines,
nonetheless, law is nothing like literature the structure and the content of the law is pretty much
formal, clearly defined and at times has contradictions that can only be resolved through mediation,
arbitration, or a court of law.

Legal jurisdictions in the world and fundamentals...are we moving away from them?

The practice of respecting fundamental rights seems to be a challenge greater than what I
foresee will be resolved by politicians, in their way of managing instead of governing, my
perception is that they are merchants of public relations and little beyond public relations
officers, at least this is how I see them, as prima donnas who speak out before they listen to
what their stakeholders are expecting of them, perhaps they are more into looking in the
mirror than the understanding process of the information elicting process, and, whilst they
do announce a number of projects on media, we keep wondering whether these are articles
on the newspapers that are meant to be a track record worth highlighting prior to the next
general election, this is the skeptic persons view of politics.

Not every jurisdiction can guarantee that there are no conflicts with fundamental rights and
whilst many try to keep their house in order when the inspector is visiting the premises, it is
the lack of beauty in everyday mess that leaves questions in the minds of many citizens,
whose complaints have been resounding many cases at the courts of law, leaving traces of
precedents that repeat themselves, creating a sembliance of the humans learning curve as
the being that does not always learn what the rule of law taught them, probably in school.

Listing down all known law to myself would be a very lengthy exercise, I am going to
apologize for lacking in such comprehensive listing, but I will refer you back to the university
where many books were written explaining the origins and the interpretations of the
philosophy of law. My career was ruined as a result of my arrogance, my attitude and the
response that came from bureaucrats whose reasoning was that nobody is indispensable,
however other market factors and economic factors were into play, throughout my
unfortunate life which failed the accomplishment of my goals.

Many activists confer to themselves the felt duty to communicate and to act as neo-
politicians, hoping to achieve a dream that they might not feel is within their control to
achieve, however I leave it up to everyone interviewed as a political activist to speak for
themselves. One politician was reported to create a sort of an academic definition
separating the work of a lawyer from that of a politician, and, I still wonder why there is a
need for such a specialization to be spelt out to us, citizens who are not interested in
understanding the roles you were given by your head of department.

The debate in this essay is whether the law is up-to-date, and is effectively serving to
regulate society, and also whether having filled in the relevant forms and gone through the
usual processes and backdoors, law serves to mediate a situation that would be difficult to
negotiate without there being a philosophy of law that is agreed upon by the parties
involved. Many expect to have rights, and, many are aware of some of their obligations,
