INTRODUCTION NATIONAL

This standard is the transposition, in Italian, the European standard EN 933-7

(edition March 1998), which takes as the status of Italian national standard. The
translation was organized by UNI.

The UNICEMENTO (Organization for Standardization of Plumbers Binders, mortars,

concretes and reinforced concrete - via Battistotti 11B Sassi, 20133 Milano), federated
entity UNI, which follows the European works on the subject, by delegation of the
Central Technical Commission, approved the European project November 28, 1997,
and the Italian version of the standard 2 July 1999.

In order to facilitate users, the table below shows the correspondence between the rules
mentioned in point "Normative References" and the current Italian standards: EN 933-1

= UNI EN 933-1
EN 933-2 = UNI EN 933-2

The UNI are reviewed, when necessary, with the publication of new editions or updates.

It is therefore important that users of these it is found to be in possession of the latest edition
and any updates.

The UNI are processed trying to take into account the views of all parties concerned and to
reconcile every aspect con fl ittuale, to represent the real state of the matter and the necessary
degree of consensus.
Anyone who considers, following the application of this standard, can provide suggestions for its
improvement or its adaptation to a state in evolution is requested to send their contributions to UNI,
Italian National Agency for the Uni fi cation, that will keep them into account for the possible revision
of the standard itself.

It applies to gravel or mixed aggregate containing gravel.

The test method speci fi ed in this part of this European Standard is applicable to particle size fractions d i / D the , where
D the 63 mm and d the 4 mm.
Note For size of aggregates with D > 63 mm and / or d < 4 mm, the test may be performed on the fraction d i / D the
where D the 63 mm and d the 4 mm.

3 TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

For the purposes of this European Standard apply the definitions below:

3.1 aggregate size: De fi nition of aggregate in terms of dimensions of the lower sieve ( d ) and greater than ( D ).

Note This de fi nition accepts the presence of some particles which will be retained by the upper sieve (above
sieve) and some that will pass from the lower sieve (under sieve).

3.2 size class d i / D i: Percentage of an aggregate passing through the largest ( D the ) two sieves and retained by
the smaller ( d the ).

Note The lower limit may be zero.

3.3 test sample: Champion used completely in a single test.

3.4 constant mass: successive weighings after drying carried out at a distance of at least 1 h that do not differ
by more than 0.1%.

*) National Note - The standard was published in 1999.

UNI EN 933-7: 2000 Page 3 of 10

In many cases the constant mass can be obtained after drying of a test portion for a predetermined period in a
speci fi c oven (see 5.3) at a temperature of (110 5) C. Laboratory tests will determine the time necessary to
obtain a constant mass for particular types and sizes of samples, in relation to the drying capacity of the oven used.

3.5 shell: Outer shell of a mollusk.

4 PRINCIPLE
The test is to manually select shells and shell fragments from a coarse aggregate test sample. The shell
content is determined as the ratio between the mass of the shells and fragments of shells relative to the mass
of the test sample. The content of shells, SC , It is expressed as a percentage.

5 EQUIPMENT
Unless otherwise speci fi ed, all equipment must comply with the general requirements of prEN 932-5.

5.1 Test sieves , with nominal size of the openings in accordance with EN 933-2.

5.2 Collecting vessel is cover with seal for the sieves.

5.3 Fan oven , thermostatically controlled to maintain a temperature of (110 5) C, or equipment for drying the
aggregate that does not cause any reduction of the particle size.

5.4 Weight scale or sized tool , of suitable capacity with accuracy of 0.1% of the mass to be weighed.

5.5 Trays

5.6 Brushes

5.7 Stacciatrice to sift , optional.

6 PREPARATION OF THE TEST PORTION

The sample must be reduced in accordance with the requirements of prEN 932-2. Dry the sample at (110 5) C
fi no to constant mass. Weigh and record the mass as M 0 .

Sifting with appropriate test sieves, stirring vigorously suf fi cient to ensure the complete separation of particles
larger than 4 mm. Discard the particles retained by the sieve test by 63 mm and those passing the test sieve 4
mm. If necessary, reduce the sample in accordance with prEN 932-2 to produce a test sample. Record the
mass of the test sample as M 1 . The mass of the test sample must be as speci fi ed in Table 1.

Note For more aggregate size D , Appropriate masses of test samples can be interpolated between
those provided in Table 1.

The reduction of the sample should produce a greater mass of the test sample of the minimum, but not equal
to an exact predetermined value. Carry out the test on each granulometric class d i / D the where D the 2 d the .

The samples in which D > 2 d They must be previously separated into grain size classes, d i / D the , where D the 2 d the .

7 METHOD

7.1 Test samples in which D 2 d

Stretch the particles of the test sample on a flat surface and manually separate the shells and shell fragments.

Determine the mass of shells and shell fragments and record their mass M 2 .

7.2 Test samples in which D > 2 d

Separate the test sample size classes d i / D the , where D the 2 d the stacciando in accordance with EN 933-1.

Record the mass of each particle size class as M the and calculate and record as V the the percentage by mass of
each particle size class d the/ D the in relation to the mass of the test sample M 1.

Discard any size class d the/ D the that includes less than 10% of M 1.

Note 1 Each size class d the/ D the remaining, which contains less than 100 particles, should, if required, ES-
nights recorded in the test report.

Note 2 The size classes d the/ D the containing an excessive number of particles can be further
reduced in accordance with prEN 932-2.

Note 3 The particle size classes may be further reduced if they are constituted by a number signi fi cativa-
mind greater than 200 particles. Record the mass M first of the particles that are to be tested in each class
remaining granulometric d the/ D the and separating as described in 7.1. Record the mass M second of shells and shell
fragments in each of these size classes d the/ D the.

UNI EN 933-7: 2000 Page 5 of 10

8 CALCULATION AND EXPRESSION OF RESULTS

8.1 Test samples in which D 2 d

Calculate the content of shells SC in accordance with the following equation:

SC M=2 M( 1 / ) 100

where:
M1 is the mass of the test sample, expressed in grams;
M2 is the mass of shells and shell fragments, expressed in grams. Record the value of SC rounding
to the nearest whole number.

8.2 Test samples in which D > 2 d

8.2.1 not reduced particle size classes

If no class particle size was reduced, calculate the quantity of shells in accordance with the following equation:

M second
SC = --------------- 100
M first

where:

M first is the sum of the masses of the particle size fractions tested, in grams; is the sum of the masses of
shells and shell fragments in each of the size classes tested, in grams. Record the value of SC rounding
M second

to the nearest whole number.

8.2.2 reduced particle size classes

If one of the particle size classes was reduced, calculate the percentage by mass of shells and shell fragments
in each size class and recorded as SC the.
Calculate the weighted average of the percentage of shells and fragments of conghiglia accordance with the
following equation:

SC
(V the SC the )
= ------------------------------
V the

where:
V the is the percentage by mass of the particle size class in the tested sample;
SC the is the percentage by mass of shells and shell fragments in the particle size fraction the.

Record the weighted average percentage of shells and shell fragments rounding to the nearest whole number.
