FINDING THE CIRCUMCENTRE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRIANGLES

AIM: To find the circumcentre of an acute angled triangle, right angled triangle and obtuse
angled triangle experimentally.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: (1) Coloured Papers

(2) Geometry Box
(3) Glue
(4) A pair of scissors
PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE :

(1) Knowledge of acute angled triangle , right angled triangle and obtuse angled triangle
(2) Knowledge of the perpendicular bisectors of the sides of the triangles

PROCEDURE:

(1) Cut an acute angled triangle from a coloured paper and name it as ABC.

(2) Fold the side AB of the triangle in such a way that A falls on B , thereby creating a crease EF ,
thereby creating a perpendicular bisector of AB.

(3) Similarly, get the perpendicular bisector GH and IJ of the sides BC and AC respectively.

(4) We observe that the three perpendicular bisectors are concurrent at S. S is called the
circumcentre of ABC.

(5) Repeat the same activity for right angled triangle and obtuse angled triangle.

RESULT:

(1) For acute angled triangle, the circumcentre lies inside its triangle.

(2) For right angled triangle, the circumcentre lies at the mid point of its hypotenuse.

(3) For obtuse angled triangle, the circumcentre lies outside the triangle.

(4) The circumcentre is equidistant from the three vertices of the triangle.

(5) Taking the circumcentre as centre and distance between the circumcentre and vertices as
radius, a circle can be drawn passing through the vertices of the triangle.

(6) This circle is called circumcircle of the triangle and its radius is called the circumradius.
