THE RACE FOR INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY IS ENDLESS NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE.

Throughout its history, Intergraph has been helping customers around the world
to improve productivity in placement and operation of CAPEX facilities. Today, we
are helping customers change the way they do business by offering solutions that
make them more productive and enable them to capture and reuse their intellectual
capital across the entire enterprise.
Recently, industry analyst ARC Advisory Group named us the No. 1 overall
engineering design solution provider for plant design based on revenues for the
eighth year in a row (page 7). We thank our customers for helping make this
achievement possible.
This issue of Insight highlights the successes of several of these customers. Wor-
leyParsons is implementing more effective technology changes by incorporating
people and processes in its overall strategy (page 12). For the worlds largest research
effort on nuclear fusion, ITER Organization selected SmartPlant Materials, Smart-

PM: No. Just the traditional vendors are active. In the EPC
market, you can observe a shift. Three or four years ago in the
Middle East, Korean EPCs like Hyundai Heavy Industries were
winning nearly every project with the entire package, including
engineering, construction and sourcing.
But now something has changed. The Western EPCs are com-
ing back, though the Koreans are still getting the construction
part of the projects. One of the reasons for the success of the Ko-
reans in the past was their price dumping strategy. But at the end
of the day, they do their business on the fabrication side.

Strong Strategy for 3D Plant Design

Two solutions provide perfect fit for different needs

o provide a comprehensive strategy for 3D plant

design, Intergraph offers Smart 3D and CADWorx.
Insight recently interviewed Rick Allen, president
of Intergraph CADWorx & Analysis Solutions, and
Dominik Hepp, product owner of the CADWorx Plant Design
Suite, to explore the best fit for using these solutions.

Insight: People sometimes ask, Why does Intergraph

develop and offer both Intergraph Smart 3D and CADWorx
to the plant design community? Could either of you clarify
the reasoning here?

Rick Allen: Smart 3D and CADWorx have capabilities that

make both of them suitable for a wide range of projects and ap-
plications, although each has its own strengths and niches.
Smart 3D excels in delivering very complex projects or mega-
projects, with perhaps multiple design centers regionally or glob-
ally. Often these projects last many years and require major in-
vestments in resources and manpower.
CADWorx is an AutoCAD-based solution, and its sweet spot
is in the small- to medium-sized project range. It can also effec-
tively handle larger projects, but certainly not at the scale that can
be undertaken by Smart 3D. For example, as featured in this issue
of Insight, one of our clients, Richard Design Services, recently
completed a US$360 million renewable diesel facility in Norco,
Louisiana actually the largest renewable diesel facility in the
U.S. The project consisted of 450 pieces of equipment and 200,000
feet of pipe ranging from 1.5 to 24 inches in diameter. The project
also required a fast-track, 12-month engineering timetable with a
22-month overall schedule.
The ability for CADWorx to deliver fast implementation ca-
pabilities and project turnarounds for small, medium and some
larger projects has been a major key for its success.
Dominik Hepp: Also, it is worth mentioning that some
smaller projects are often part of larger mega-projects. CADWorx
not only handles these projects really well, but it also integrates With CADWorx being an AutoCAD-based solution, are there

Information Challenge
Bringing structure to unstructured legacy data

they have been involved with from conceptual design
to commissioning, all handled by a single EPC con-
tractor who has handed over a perfect set of data files.
However, in practice, most of us have to function within plants
that incorporate brownfield elements built in the past for anoth-

plant documentation is likely to be incomplete, unstructured and
in a variety of formats, introducing a range of operational, safety
and financial risks. Consequently, software for structuring and
analyzing such documentation is a valuable tool for brownfield
site operators.
When acquiring existing facilities, the new owner operator
will often discover that the various contractors who were involved
in engineering and construction over the years used different de-
sign and data management tools. Therefore, the information that
exists is often in unintelligent formats like scanned documents,

Systems completion brings together engineering, construction

and operations to promote visibility, accuracy and control

lthough systems completion refers to the transition

between construction and operations, much of the
planning and administration for it begin early in the
project. This includes critical activities such as me-
chanical completion and commissioning and, finally, the hand-
over to operations.
These activities depend on engineering design and project
status information, which change during the project. Failure to
manage these changes effectively often leads to project over-runs.
Systems completion is complex, involving many parties and
information from many sources. Hence, small delays in one area
can have serious effects elsewhere. Early and easy access to reli-
able information, well-managed processes and clear change man-
agement are essential for successful systems completion.

Problems of current tools

Systems completion on a modern project requires effective in-
formation management tools.
Dedicated software packages are available, but these generally
use data disconnected from the engineering design basis (data
used for plant construction and operation). Therefore, a signifi-
cant data capture, cleansing and consolidation effort is required.
Additionally, this data is usually not transferred to the opera-
tions systems, requiring walkdowns and data discovery efforts
during operations. Furthermore, once the systems completion
stage is closed out, the information is no longer available to the bring further benefits to projects where multiple contractors are
