RESEARCH GAP

1. RESEARCH AREA
This study research is being conducted in our country Malaysia. It focuses more on the
Peninsular of Malaysia especially along road Kulim Baling, Kedah.

2. RECOGNITION

1. Major study
This project is about soil engineering where this project is about the evaluation of
slope stability by using Atterberg limits. Besides that, this project also discuss about
the liquid limit and plastic limit that contribute to the slope failure. In this study we
find the liquid limit and plastic limit at some depth below ground level in vertical and
perpendicular direction to slope failure surface. This project will be use Atterberg
limit test to get the data.
2. Sub-study
- To determine the physical characteristic such as particle size distribution of hill
slope location soil.
- To obtain the mean value of plasticity index, liquid limit and plastic limit for
every 100mm, 400mm, 700mm and 1000mm below ground level in vertical and
perpendicular direction to slope failure.
3. Variable
The variables involved in this study research are moisture content and cone
penetration (mm).
4. Parameters.
Liquid limit and plastic limit of soil.
5. Method and instruments
Major : Liquid Limit & Plastic limit
Analysis : Cone Penetration
Author Finding
Binu Sharma, Padma K. Bora (2011) - Values of shear strength of clay at the
liquid limit of a large number of soils
(liquid limit varying from 32 to 190%)
Nurly Gofar, Lee Min Lee (2008) - The high occurrences of the slope
failures in these regions can be
attributed to two major factors: (1)
Intense and (2) Frequent downpours,
and natural characteristics of residual
soil.
Youventharan Duraisamy (2010) - Residual soil with extensive weathering
of parent materials can yield collapsible
soil deposit.
- Residual soil known as products of
chemical weathering and their
characteristic are dependant upon
environmental factors of climate, parent
material, topography and age and these
factors occur in tropical regions where
heavy rainfall and warm temperature
are most favourable to chemical
weathering and deep residual soil
profile development.
- When moisture content is high, the
bonding between soils particle is
weakens and the friction between soils
particle is lost.
Radhey S. Sharma & Sonal Singhal (2006) - Collapsible soils are moisture sensitive
and susceptible to large reductions in
volume with increase in moisture
content
Jaehong Kim (2004) - Rainfall leads to the development of
perched water table, a rise in the main
groundwater table, surface erosion and
increase in unit weight along with
moisture content.
Shumoeel, Abdul Quddus, Ishaq Hussain & - The greater the liquid limit, the greater
Gayatri (2015) the compressibility of soil.
- For soil with same value of liquid limit,
the greater the plasticity index, the
greater the dry strength and toughness
at plastic limit.
