Planning Your System

Important Considerations
Emerson Process Management encourages you to carefully consider how you will
migrate your existing PROVOX system to a DeltaV system. You can purchase a
service to migrate your existing system or you can manually recreate your existing
configuration using DeltaV applications. It is highly recommended that you contact
your Emerson Process Management sales representative and purchase the migration
service. If you decide to manually migrate your system, consider the following:
PROVOX controllers have a larger input/output capacity than the DeltaV
controller. You must determine if the existing configuration will fit into the
DeltaV controller. If it does not fit, divide the configuration among multiple
controllers. Refer to System Capacities on page 15 for more information.
Rack space is an important consideration. If you must divide your configuration
among multiple controllers be sure that you have adequate rack space to house
the controllers and Interfaces for PROVOX I/O.
Keep in mind that PROVOX and DeltaV controllers are structured differently.
The point is the fundamental entity in the PROVOX system and the function block is
the fundamental entity in the DeltaV system. It is possible that migration is as
simple as translating PROVOX points to DeltaV function blocks. However, the
DeltaV system has many advanced control features not supported by the
PROVOX system. Implementing these features could reduce the size and
complexity of your existing configuration and reduce the number of DeltaV
controllers needed to replace PROVOX controllers.
The DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O does not support all the card types that
are supported by PROVOX controllers. If the DeltaV Interface for
PROVOX I/O does not support a PROVOX card used in your configuration,
you must determine how to address these input/output signals. Refer to
Supported PROVOX Control I/O Cards on page 13 and Supported
PROVOX Distributed I/O Cards on page 14 for more information.
Ensure that the input voltage specification of the DeltaV System Power Supply
matches the output voltage specifications of the power source that you intend to
use. The input voltage range of the DeltaV System Power Supply that is provided
with the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O and MD controller has an input
range of 20.4 to 28.8 VDC which is compatible with the PROVOX Type CP6103
System Power Supply. Earlier versions of the DeltaV System Power Supply have a
smaller input voltage range of 22.8 to 25.2 VDC which does not match the
PROVOX System Power Supplys output range.

How will you divide your control strategy into logical divisions (called areas in a
DeltaV system)?
What is required to run your control strategy in a DeltaV system? On which
controllers will the control modules run?
How will you move your operator displays to a DeltaV system? It may be
necessary to recreate your displays using DeltaV Operate.
What is required to migrate your alarms scheme and how will you handle process
and events history collection?
How will you split your I/O across DeltaV controllers?
What is the requirement for wiring lengths?
Refer to the Getting Started with Your DeltaV Automation System manual for an
introduction to DeltaV system concepts and to DeltaV Books Online for complete
information on DeltaV system requirements.

14 Getting Started with DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O

Supported DeltaV I/O Cards
All DeltaV I/O cards are supported in a system that uses DeltaV Control for
PROVOX I/O. Refer to the Installing Your DeltaV Automation System manual for a
complete list of DeltaV I/O cards.

System Capacities
The full range of 16 PROVOX files with redundant cards is supported. Each MD
controller can support 750 Device Signal Tags (DSTs). Each I/O channel is assigned
one DST. As with DeltaV I/O, a DST is counted toward licensing only if it is linked to
a module. The number of channels varies depending upon the card type; but generally,
46 or more Control I/O cards and 93 or more Distributed I/O cards constitute about
750 DSTs. Backup cards do not contribute to the DST count. Add an MD controller
for every 750 DSTs that you have in your I/O subsystem. Remember to carefully
consider wiring lengths and the location of control modules when you split your I/O
across multiple controllers. The following sections provide basic information on DST
syntax and explain how data is referenced in a DeltaV system. Refer to DeltaV Books
Online for complete information on DSTs including how DSTs are counted for
licensing and for more information on referencing data.

DST Syntax
The DeltaV system uses the following default format to specify DSTs:
Controller/File number/Card number/Channel number
The default DST for channel 6 of card 11 in file 9 of a Control I/O subsystem
connected to the PROVOX I/O Interface card connected to controller CRTL02 is:
CTRL02F09C11CH06
Similarly, the default DST for channel 4 of card 6 in file 12 of a Distributed I/O
subsystem connected to the PROVOX I/O Interface card connected to controller
CRTL0B is:
CRTL0BF12C06CH04
You can rename your DSTs to be more meaningful in your control strategy.

Referencing Data in a DeltaV System

Parameter references are used to reference data such as run time values and diagnostic
information. External references are used to reference parameters outside of the

Introduction 15
current module. Internal references are used to reference parameters within the
current module.
External references are made through:
A DST the external reference links to a DST in the same way a function block
links to the DST. Refer to page 15 for DST syntax.
An I/O path The external reference links to the channel input and output
parameters in this form:
NODE/PVXIO/Card File/Card/Channel/Parameter/Field

Components
The term DeltaV Control for PROVOX I/O is used to describe the combined system
as well as the component that provides the interface between a DeltaV system and a
PROVOX system. The individual components are:
DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O Carrier mounts in a cabinet on standard 19
inch vertical rails. The system power supplies, MD controllers, and DeltaV Interfaces
for PROVOX I/O (2 of each for redundancy) install in the six carrier slots. Two BNC
style coaxial connectors connect the primary and secondary I/O communication
links on the carrier to the communication links on the PROVOX Distributed and
Control I/O. A 37 pin D-shell connector and 6 pin terminal block provide signal and
power connections to the DeltaV I/O horizontal carrier. Refer toSpecifications on
page 41 for dimensions and specifications.
DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O (redundant capable) provides the interface
between one redundant MD controller and redundant PROVOX Control I/ O buses.
Refer to Specifications on page 41 for dimensions and specifications.
MD Controllers (redundant capable) perform control and manage
communication between the DeltaV I/O subsystem and the Control Network. We
recommend that you use an MD controller hardware revision 5.13 or higher, final
assembly 12P2093X082 or higher with the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O. To
ensure that the controller is the proper revision, remove the controller from the
carrier, turn it over, and look for part number 12P2093X082. Also, part number
12P2093X022 or part numbers 12P2093X042 through 12P2093X072 can be used if
the entire assembly is mounted in a grounded conductive cabinet, as recommended.
Another way to determine the controller revision is to select the controller in DeltaV
Diagnostics and read the value for the Hardware Revision (HwRev), which should be
5.13 or higher. (The controller must be in a DeltaV carrier and commissioned for the
Hardware Revision to be available in Diagnostics.) Refer to the Installing Your DeltaV

Automation System manual for specifications, dimensions, and troubleshooting
information.
Dual DC/DC Power Supplies (redundant capable) powers the MD
controllers, DeltaV Interfaces for PROVOX I/O and DeltaV I/O cards. Refer to the
Installing Your DeltaV Automation System manual for specifications, dimensions, and
troubleshooting information. This power supply does not power the PROVOX cards.
LocalBus Extender supplies power to the DeltaV I/O subsystem and provides
communications connections between the controller and I/O cards. Refer to the
Installing Your DeltaV Automation System manual for information.

Redundancy
Redundant power supplies, redundant MD Controllers, and redundant DeltaV
Interfaces for PROVOX I/O are required for redundancy in the controller
installation. Each primary and backup DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O is paired
with an MD controller. (Controller A is paired with DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/
O A and controller B is paired with Interface for PROVOX I/O B.) Controller A is
powered from power supply A and controller B is powered from power supply B.
Both power supplies provide load-shared power to both Interface modules. Refer to
the PROVOX documentation for information on PROVOX I/O card redundancy.

Installing Your DeltaV Installation manual for information on the tools required for
installation, wiring guidelines, and torque limits.

Note To ensure reliable operation of your system, it is recommended that you install redundant
controllers and use an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to backup controller power.

Note All electrical installations must conform to applicable federal, state, and local codes and
regulations.

CE Statement
Note This manual describes installation and maintenance procedures for products that have
been tested to be in compliance with appropriate CE directives. To maintain compliance,
these products must be installed and maintained according to the procedures described in
this document. Failure to follow the procedures may compromise compliance.

Installing the I/O Carriers

You must ensure that you have adequate rack space and DIN rail support when you
install the DeltaV I/O carriers. If you are removing an existing PROVOX controller
and replacing it with DeltaV I/O carriers in the same location, rack space may not be
a consideration. However, if you are not removing an existing PROVOX controller,
allow for more space and install additional DIN rails for your DeltaV I/O.
If you removed the PROVOX controller, you should have the screws that held it in
place. Use eight of the screws to install the carrier for the DeltaV I/O. Otherwise,
install the carrier in the desired location.

Carrier Ground Wiring

Connect ground terminal J13 to the Local Ground Bus (LGB) with a 12 AWG
insulated wire. To easily identify the ground wire, use insulation that is green with a
yellow stripe.

Hardware Installation 19
Refer to the PROVOX AC and DC Power and Ground Wiring document (PN1:003) for
connection details.

Installing the Power Supplies

The redundant DeltaV Dual DC/DC power supply provides power to the DeltaV
controllers, DeltaV I/O cards, and the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O. It does
not provide power to the PROVOX I/O cards. Remember to calculate power
consumption to determine the number of DeltaV power supplies required. Use a 12
or 24 VDC DeltaV bulk power supply to power the system power supply. Be sure that
the input voltage specifications of the DeltaV System Power Supply that you intend to
use matches the output voltage specifications of the power source. Refer to the
Installing Your DeltaV Automation System manual for information on the DeltaV bulk
power supplies and for instructions on calculating power consumption.

1. Connect the input supply wires to the input power connection on the top of the
system power supply as shown in Figure 2. If you have backup system power
supplies, connect the input supply wires to each system power supply.

Warning Always remove input power to the supply before connecting or disconnecting
the input power connection. The connector should not interrupt current flow
and could be damaged if actuated under a load condition.

Hardware Installation 21
Note Controller A is powered from power supply A and controller B is powered from power
supply B. Both power supplies provide load-shared power to both PROVOX I/O
Interfaces A and B and to the DeltaV I/O. If either power supply fails, both
PROVOX I/O Interfaces remain powered.

Installing the MD Controllers

DeltaV MD controllers provide control and manage communications for both the
PROVOX I/O and the DeltaV I/O. Here are a few things to consider about MD
Controllers:
Online controller replacement is not supported. You cannot have a simultaneous
communications link between a DeltaV controller and a PROVOX controller.
MD Controllers communicate only with the associated DeltaV Interface for
PROVOX I/O. The MD Controller in slot 2 communicates only with the DeltaV
Interface for PROVOX I/O in slot 5. Likewise, the MD Controller in slot 4
communicates only with the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O in slot 6.
When the MD Controller is the active controller, its associated Interface for
PROVOX I/O is active as indicated by the LEDs on the Interface.
If a controller switchover occurs, the standby controller on the associated
Interface takes over.
Refer to the Installing Your DeltaV Automation System manual and to DeltaV Books
Online for information on DeltaV Controller redundancy.
1. Align a controller with the connector on the carrier and push to attach. As shown
in Figure 1, the controllers install to the right of the power supplies in slots 2 and
4 (left to right) on the carrier.
2. Tighten the mounting screw.

3. Connect network cables from the hubs to the RJ-45 connectors on the bottom
of each controller. The front connector is for the primary Control Network and
the rear connector is for the secondary Control Network.

Installing the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O

The DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O provides the interface between one MD
controller and the PROVOX I/O.

22 Getting Started with DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O

1. Align the PROVOX I/O Interface with the connector on the carrier and push to
attach. As shown in Figure 1, the PROVOX I/O Interfaces install side by side to
the right of the controller in slot 4 on the carrier.

2. Tighten the mounting screw.

Note The PROVOX I/O Interface is powered by either power supply. If the paired MD
controller is not installed, commissioned, configured, or powered, the Power and Error
lights will be on and the Active and Standby lights will be flashing.

Extending Power and Connecting the Communications Links

The LocalBus supplies power to the DeltaV I/O subsystem and provides
communications connections between the controller and DeltaV I/O cards. Figure 1
shows the LocalBus connections.
If you are extending power to another 8-wide carrier, follow steps 1 through 5.
Otherwise, go to step 6.

Note DeltaV vertical I/O carriers are not supported.

1. Remove the red and black wires from the LocalBus right extender 6 pin terminal
block.
2. Remove the LocalBus cable from the D-shell connector on the right extender.

3. Connect the LocalBus cable to the D-shell connector on the carrier.

4. Connect the red wire to a positive (+) pin and the black wire to a negative (-) pin
on the carrier.

5. Connect the other end of the LocalBus extender cable to an 8-wide I/O
Interface carrier to power the carrier.
6. The coaxial cables provide communications connections between the PROVOX
I/O Interface carrier and the I/O files. Connect the primary and secondary I/O
Comms on the PROVOX I/O Interface carrier to the primary and secondary
communications links on the Distributed and Control I/O files.

Important Information About Upgrading After a Protocol
Change
It is possible that a change in the communications protocol could occur resulting in a
version incompatibility between controllers and PROVOX Interfaces. If a version
incompatibility occurs, communication stops and the Controller Upgrade Utility
presents a failure message during the upgrade of an Interface. Despite this message,
you can still perform the upgrade. Follow these steps to continue the upgrade if you
receive a failure message during the upgrade of an Interface card.
It is assumed in this procedure that you have begun the upgrade of an I/O interface

Configuring a Control Strategy

Use the DeltaV Control Studio application to configure a control strategy.
To open Control Studio, click Start | All Programs | DeltaV | Engineering | Control
Studio. Refer to the Control Studio online help and to Books Online for information
on configuring a control strategy.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when using PROVOX I/O in a control strategy:
Loops that use PROVOX output channels should not run faster than 200
milliseconds. Failure to follow this requirement could result in module errors
such as output transfer errors.
The valid range for the PULSE_DURATION parameter (DI cards, Discrete
Output Momentary channel types) is 0.1 to 25.5 in 0.1 increments. The valid

34 Getting Started with DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O

range for the RATE_PERIOD parameter, available on PCI cards is 0.1 to 5
seconds in 0.1 increments. For both the PULSE_DURATION and
RATE_PERIOD parameters, the DeltaV system will accept a value outside of the
range but adjusts the value and allows the card to be configured. This differs from
the PROVOX system that will not accept a value outside of the valid range. For
decimal values, the DeltaV system adjusts the value to only one digit after the
decimal without rounding. That is, all decimal placements after the tenths (10ths)
digit are ignored. For example, .17 is adjusted to .1.
With the PROVOX Distributed RTD Card Special, you will not receive a warning
message if you configure the SPECIAL_HIGH temperature value to be lower
than the SPECIAL_LOW temperature value. Furthermore, a download of the
configuration completes successfully with no warning messages. Be sure that the
SPECIAL_LOW temperature value is lower than the SPECIAL_HIGH
temperature value.
For some PROVOX Distributed temperature channels, temperature ranges
uploaded to the function blocks XD_SCALE are wider than the card range
configured in the DeltaV Explorer. The function block output is accurate within
the published range in PROVOX documentation. Affected channel types are
RTD (-50 to 200 F), Type J High, Type K High, and Type R.
If a PROVOX I/O card loses communication with the DeltaV controller, it goes
to its FAIL_ACTION_MODE. For Time Proportional Output (TPO) cards, if
the FAIL_ACTION_MODE parameter is configured to go to the failure action
value and the FAIL_ACTION_VALUE parameter is not equal to 50%, the card
sends an extra pulse that equals the fail action value. Furthermore, if the
communication with the controller does not resume after 10 seconds all the cards
in the file become unconfigured and in the case of the TPO card, all the channels
turn off. That is, the maximum duration for a pulse in a TPO channel is 10
seconds.

DeltaV Diagnostics
Use the DeltaV Diagnostics program to view diagnostic information about your
DeltaV system. In addition to providing information about the DeltaV system,
DeltaV Diagnostics also provides important troubleshooting information about
DeltaV Interfaces for PROVOX I/O, Card files, and PROVOX I/O cards. DeltaV
Diagnostics is also used to perform manual I/O card switchovers, to enable and
disable automatic I/O card switchovers, and to force maintenance ranges for Smart
hybrid channels. Refer to the Diagnostics online help and to Books Online for more
information about using the Diagnostics program.
Click Start | All Programs | DeltaV | Operator | Diagnostics to open DeltaV
Diagnostics.

Viewing Information about a DeltaV Interface for PROVOX

I/O
Diagnostic information such as Overall Integrity and Status is available for the active
and standby Interfaces. To view information about the active Interface, expand the
tree in the left pane, select PROVOX I/O, and view information in the right pane. To
view information about the standby interface, expand the tree in the left pane, find the
Redundancy level, and select Standby PROVOX I/O.

Performing Manual Switchovers of PROVOX I/O Cards

Refer to the PROVOX documentation for information on redundant PROVOX
cards.
1. Expand the tree in the Diagnostics left pane, select the primary active card, click
the right mouse button, and select Redundancy Switchover.
If the backup card is available, the primary card switches over. After the switchover,
the primary card shows a status of Inactive (in the right pane), and OInteg is BAD.
The backup card shows a status of Active and OInteg is BAD. The Backup card now
shows channels beneath it in the left pane.
2. To switch back to the primary card, select the active backup, click the right
mouse button, and select Redundancy Switchover.

Troubleshooting 37
The primary card is now active and the backup card is standby and both cards should
show good status; however, automatic switchover is disabled after a manual
switchover.

To enable automatic switchover

1. For both the primary and backup cards, select the card, click the right mouse
button, and select Enable Auto Switchover.
To disable automatic switchover, select the card, click the right mouse button, and
select Disable Auto Switchover.

Forcing Maintenance Ranges for Smart Hybrid Channels

Use the Channel Force Maintenance Ranges command in DeltaV Diagnostics to
enter device ranges when performing a wiring checkout for a PROVOX Smart Hybrid
input or output channel with no field device connected. Only use this command if the
device has never been connected. If the device has been connected and then
disconnected, the Smart card remembers the ranges.

1. Open DeltaV Diagnostics (Start | DeltaV | Operator | Diagnostics).

2. Select the Smart hybrid input or output channel for which you want to check
wiring, click the right mouse button, and select Channel Force Maintenance
Ranges from the context menu.
For an input channel, enter a valid field device range, and click OK. Refer to
the device documentation for valid ranges.
For an output channel, enter a range of 0 to 100, and click OK.
3. Perform the wiring checkout.
The forced ranges remain in effect until the field device is connected to the channel.
When the device is connected, the AI or AO block uploads the actual field device
ranges.

Diagnosing HART Errors for Smart Input and Output

Channels
When trying to locate a problem in a malfunctioning HART field device, remember
that the DeltaV Diagnostics program displays a HART channel error only when the
Process Level is configured as Error. (Process Levels can be configured as None,
Information, Warning, and Error.) At Process Levels other than Error, the error

38 Getting Started with DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O

appears at the card and file level, but not at the channel level. If Process Levels are
configured at None, Information, or Warning, you can identify the specific channel in
error by selecting each channel, right-clicking, and choosing Channel Variable Process
Alarm Status.

Additional Troubleshooting Information

The following information may be useful in troubleshooting your system.
The standby controller is unavailable for a switchover if the entire DeltaV I/O
subsystem fails. For example, the standby controller is unavailable if power is
removed from the DeltaV I/O subsystem or if all I/O cards are removed. If a
power failure removes all I/O cards, a redundant pair will function as a simplex
controller.
In the DeltaV system, unlike the PROVOX system, a power failure causes the
MD Controller to go into Cold Restart. Refer to DeltaV Books Online for
information on Cold Restart.
In the event of a failure, the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O, rather than the
PROVOX cards, holds the fail safe value.
There is no mechanism in the DeltaV Interface for PROVOX I/O to change
Smart Digital Output devices to Computer mode.
