Johns Hopkins Summer Internship Program

Dear Lab Coordinator Alex,

I am writing to apply for Laboratory for Child Development Summer Research Internship
at Johns Hopkins University. I learn about this program while searching for internships that
would fit my skills and goals. I believe this program will give me an excellent opportunity to
maximize my researching skills that I have learned and developed in the past semester in a
research lab setting. I have a genuine interest in pursuing a teaching certification and human
development research; my long-term goals include becoming both high school teacher and
community college lecturer.
I have working experiences in research lab, student mentoring, student teaching, and
student supervising; I have a total of one semester of research lab work at Georgia Institute of
Technology School of Psychology Problem Solving & Educational Technology, three semesters
of mentoring high school students at Georgia Institute of Technology GoSTEM, two semesters
of student teaching at South Forsyth Middle School, and one semester of supervising gifted
middle school and high school students at Duke University Talent Identification program. In the
research lab, I work directly under Engineering Psychology Instructor, Dar-Wei Chen, who I
help with data analysis, review experiment materials to run the lab sessions, grade papers, enter
data into the system and perform administrative tasks. I am driven and motivated by the teaching
and researching professions. I have had amazing opportunities to work with students from 6th
grade to 12th grade and I am hoping to have this excellent opportunity to learn more about child
development at Elementary School Level.
I am impressed by and interested in the work done by the Johns Hopkins Laboratory for
Child Development.
My self-motivated nature can be confirmed by any of my references. The more time I
spend working with students and in the research, the more I think about strategies and
instructions to use for my lessons plans; I constantly look for new ways to teach and mentor. Im
open for constructive feedback and discussion for improvement. I also consider educational
research to be exciting and important to the improvement of students lives, because we dont
have enough teachers who research enough to improve their instructions and students emotions;
I consider teaching to be life changing for both myself and students, because I never know how
many lives I may potentially influence.
I can be contacted by the information above and on my resume below.
Best,
Tien Tran
