Executive Director Letter

Dear Supporters:

I struggled with poverty myself and joining ProAct gave me the opportunity to give back to other people
and really show compassion to people who experience what I experienced. This is the testimony given by
LeAsia Williams, a 17-year old high school senior, as she reflected on her service learning experience from
the past year. ProAct was founded in 2010 and became a 501(c)(3) organization in 2012 in order to make a
difference in how youth and communities experienced one another. ProAct is a service learning organization
that seeks to serve through youth rather than to them. Our mission is to engage youth in public service that
educates, delights, and inspires the youth and those they serve.

Last year, ProAct, in partnership with 24 community organizations, engaged over 2,000 economically
disadvantaged boys and girls in public service to Indianapolis. These youths logged in over 10,000 hours of
community service in 126 projects. But were not looking back---because young people dont stop growing up
and the need for positive supports for their growth keeps expanding as well. As we push forward into a new
year, demand for our programs and services continues to grow as more schools and communities want to see
our innovative service-learning programs teach these children that they can make a difference no matter
their situation. Through our programs, students will have the opportunity to learn important perspectives,
skills, and values.

At a time when every smart donor is looking to make the greatest impact, supporting ProAct is a way to
reach that objective. Please, help us spread the joy of serving as we pursue our goal that every young person
in our community has available to them all the things every good parent would provide---access to positive
activities, opportunities to learn and develop skills, and lots of supportive and caring relationships.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to make this become a reality for many more boys
and girls next year. Warm wishes for your health and prosperity.

Respectfully,

Derrin Slack
Founder and Executive Director

Challenges/Lessons Learned in 2016-17

1. CHALLENGE We are at a point in our evolution as an organization

where we need to go or grow. Our workload is getting too heavy for
one full-time employee to handle. In 2017, we need to hire a full-
time program director and more support staff to maintain our
growth and continue to provide quality programs as we scale.

2. LESSON LEARNED Our corporate programs are

popular and they are working. They are bringing in revenue
for the organization and our youth are learning from the
adults who work alongside them in service projects. We
learned that because of this, we need to stress quality in
our activities in every aspect meaning we need a tough-
er vetting process for our community partners to be able to
take on consistent volunteers, quality curriculum, and suffi-
cient marketing to better communicate our story.

3. LESSON LEARNED Demand for our programs and services

continue to grow. We can no longer offer services for free.

Financial Health
ProAct exceeded financial projections for this FY2016-17 due in
large part to revenues generated from our corporate programs
and new grants we have procured. I would like to leverage this
to hire a program director.

We hosted our first annual fundraiser, a Trivia Night sponsored

by the Efroymson Family Fund which attracted over 100 guests
who were exposed to ProAct.

For FY2017-18, we are happy to increase our budget

BY 84% TO $250,000.

What to Look
Forward To
Management of Seven Steeples Farm. ProAct will be assuming
management responsibilities of this Urban Farm in the Near
West Side neighborhood of Indianapolis.

Our new program curriculum will launch in our Learning Man-

agement System powered by Litmos. This system will allow us
to efficiently and effectively administer our program to three
times as many youth in the next year.

Jefferson Awards Foundation has asked ProAct to plan and

manage its four service learning conferences. Two will be host-
ed in Indianapolis, two will be hosted in Lafayette. Working with
a reputable organization like the Jefferson Awards Foundation
will give ProAct greater publicity statewide and we hope to
build upon a relationship for national exposure.
