Grade: 7
Subject: Math
Unit: Probability
Topic: Probabilities of Simple Independent Events
Lesson Duration: 50min [9:00-9:50AM]

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:
Use experimental or theoretical probabilities to represent and solve problems involving
uncertainty.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
SP6 Conduct a probability experiment to compare the theoretical probability (determine using a
tree diagram, table or another graphic organizer) and experimental probability of two independent
events.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
Solve probability problems involving two independent events.
ASSESSMENTS
Observations: Key Questions:
Mathematical process consists of; How do you determine probabilities of
Communication simple independent events?

PROCEDURE
Introduction (3 min.):
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
1. Provide EA with a jar, gumballs and worksheet for the Green Team to work through
(hands-on probability activity).
2. Lecture; work through examples 1 and 2.
3. Have students problem solve different questions not from the textbook (write 3-5
questions on the board for students to solve on their own)
4. Students are to work on Practise and Apply questions; 1-13.
Body (45 min.):
Learning Activity #1:
Do: Work through examples 1 and 2, ask students to solve and answer students questions.
Learning Activity #2:
Do: Provide students 3-5 questions not from their textbook, write them on the board and give
students 15 minutes to solve.
Learning Activity #3:
Do: Assign Practice Questions 1-7 and the Apply Questions 8-13 for homework
Assessments/Differentiation:
Formative Assessment for student participation.
Summative Assessment for the homework assigned.
The Grid-select 4 random questions that students should have completed for homework,
students will write their 4 answers in each slot and it will be collected and marked out of
4%.
Learning Activity for the Green Team:
Do:
Students will use the jar, gumballs, and 5 questions to help them solve for probability.
Students will continue to work on the Practise & Apply questions for 5.3 which will be
collected for homework (the grid +)
Note: The jar, gumball, and prompting questions was successful. The Green Team were engaged
and had fun with this hands-on activity. The EA stated that the students were very happy to see
their names in each of the questions as well.
Assessment/Differentiation;
Formative Assessment; Jar & Gumball activity and worksheet
Summative Assessment; Practise & Apply questions (collect 4 questions for the grid)
Closure (2 min.):
Feedback From Students:
Ask: Raise your hand and put up 5 fingers if you understand how to solve for probabilities of
simple independent events? Or put up 2 fingers if you are still struggling with what we covered
today?
Feedback To Students:
Say: Tomorrow we will review and hopefully get to play a few math games on the smartboard.
Transition To Next Lesson:
Say: Please put away your books and prepare for your option classes.
The Green Team Solves for Probability
1. Patti puts 6 pink gumballs, 3 blue gumballs, and 1 yellow gumball into the
jar. What is the probability that Aaliyah will choose a pink gumball from the
jar?

2. Niki puts 4 red gumballs, 3 green gumballs, 2 yellow gumballs, and 1 pink
gumball into the jar. What is the probability that Skylah will choose a green
gumball from the jar?

3. Ross will put 6 green gumballs, 4pink gumballs, and 2 blue gumballs into
the jar. What is the probability that Emmitt will choose one blue gumball
from the jar?

4. Chantelle puts 5 blue gumballs, 2 yellow gumballs, and 1 pink gumball into
the jar. What is the probability that Lainie will choose one blue gumball
from the jar?

5. Heidi puts 3 yellow gumballs, 3 pink gumballs, 3 red gumballs, and 1 blue
gumball into the jar. What is the probability that Tayler will choose a red
gumball from the jar?
