And I must thank my Rotary family, the
members and Anns of RC Makati, whose
commitment to Rotary and solid friendships my
team and I will be counting on throughout our
journey of service. I am grateful to all of you for
your presence.
Tonight ushers in another year of work to drive
forward the game plan of the Club, taking care
to keep it aligned with and supportive of those of
Rotary and the district.
This year, we plan to keep things simple,
anchored on the one principle that has kept
our ship sailing smoothly for over five decades:
Continuity. That unspoken precept that bids me
to build on the good work of my predecessors
while putting my own stamp on the plan with a
new project or two in areas I am passionate about.

Context

F
r. Horacio de la Costa, S.J., brilliant writer and historian, captured
the essence of the Filipino when he said: The Filipino has two
treasures: his music and his faith, and further calling them jewels
of the pauper. This was affirmed by Cardinal Luis Tagle when he quoted the
Jesuit, adding: . . . Our melodies make our spirits soar above the tragedies of
life. . . our people will rise above any adversity because their hearts are filled
with song.
Truly, music is the language of the Filipino soul and has always been
integral to Filipino life. We always find occasion to make music and need no
reason to burst into song.
Prehistoric records contain descriptions of musical instruments and of
songs that celebrate birth, victory at war, and abundant harvest, chants of
mourning, and ditties of courtship.
Moving fluidly along time, we have seen our music evolvefrom the
indigenous with their raw, rhythmic sounds to the melodic kundimans, to
the music that borrows from foreign cultures, the sound that we have come
to know as OPMOriginal Pilipino Music.
It is music that is Filipino in spirit and message, with rhythms that reflect
cultures not our own-- the best of East and West blended in a genre that is
uniquely Filipino, in sounds that we carry in our heartsto sing, alone or
with company, in good times and bad, happy times and sad, in weather fair
and foul.
Tonight, the Rotary Club of Makati celebrates the Filipinos musical
journey through time - with a parade of OPM hits that straddle decades,
from the 20s to the 90s, and interpreted by the Clubs talented Rotarians
and Anns and climaxing with a choral song that speaks of the team spirit,
friendship, camaraderie and love that hold them in a strong bond as one
family -- Ikaw, Ako, Tayo, Magkakapatid.

THE SONGS AND THE ARTISTS

German Moreno | Thats Entertainment
Performed and sung by Pres. Jun Jun Dayrit
German Moreno, a.k.a. Kuya Germs/Master
Showman, was a comedian, TV host, actor, and
talent manager. He conceptualized and hosted
Thats Entertainment, a popular variety show that
showcased the talents of young, Filipino actors
and actresses and ran from 1986 to 1996.
Ruben Tagalog | Minamahal Kita
Performed and sung by Roger Collantes
Ruben Tagalog was one of two singers dubbed
King of Kundiman. In the 1940s, he hosted
his own radio program where he sang mostly
kundimans. His song Minamahal Kita is among
his greatest hits.
Ric Manrique, Jr. | Saan Ka Man
Naroroon
Performed and sung by Mundy Gonzalez
Ric Manrique, Jr. shared with Ruben Tagalog the
honorific, King of Kundiman. Many of his hits
were used as theme songs for Filipino movies
in the 1960s. Saan Ka Man Naroroon was the
theme song of a 1968 film of the same title.
Diomedes Maturan | Dungawin Mo Sana
Performed and sung by Pres. Jun Jun Dayrit
Diomedes Maturan was a balladeer who was
labeled Perry Como of the Philippines. He rose to
fame in 1958 after winning Tawag ng Tanghalan
with his interpretation of Perry Comos Rose
Tattoo. Dungawin Mo Sana stands out in his
repertoire of kundimans.
Sylvia La Torre | Sa Libis ng Nayon
Performed and sung by Tessie Amparo
Queen of Kundiman Sylvia La Torre is a radio
star, singer, and TV and stage actress. She
stepped into the music industry after winning
a singing competition at age 5. Last year in Los
Angeles, CA, she celebrated her 78th year in show
business. This mezzosoprano recorded some 300
songs, notably Sa Libis ng Nayon.
Pilita Corrales | Kapantay ay Langit
Performed and sung by Trina Galvez
A singer, songwriter, actress, and TV presenter,
Pilita Corrales is known in the Philippines
as Asias Queen of Song. Still active in show
business, she was a judge in the first season of
The X Factor Philippines in 2012 and appeared
in a Filipino sitcom just last year. Kapantay ay
Langit is her signature song.
Vilma Santos | Sixteen
Performed and sung by Sue Ann Nolido
Vilma Ate Vi Santos is an award-winning TV/
film actress and successful politician. Also
known as Star for All Seasons because of her long
career undimmed by time, she is one of the most
celebrated actresses in the Philippines. Her song
Sixteen was the top song in 1970.
Edgar Mortiz | My Pledge of Love
Performed and sung by PP Reggie Nolido
Edgar Bobot Mortiz is a popular singer, TV and
film actor and director. When he was starting
his show business career as a teen, he was Vilma
Santoss on-screen partner. He recorded and
released many songs, including My Pledge of
Love.
Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III | Together
Again
Performed and sung by PDG Pepz Bengzon &
Renalyn David
Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III are well known
actors in Philippine film and TV. Known as Guy
and Pip, the most popular showbiz love team of
all time, they paired up in films, TV shows, and
radio programs and recorded songs that became
instant hits. Together Again was part of their first
album which was released in 1971.
Fred Panopio | Ang Kawawang Cowboy
Performed and sung by Porsche Pena
Fred Panopio, known as the yodeling singer,
enjoyed the limelight from the 1970s onwards.
Panopio was known for his novelty songs which
became OPM hits. His most popular songs
include Ang Kawawang Cowboy, Pitong Gatang,
and Tatlong Baraha.
Yoyoy Villame | Butsikik
Performed and sung by PDG Robert Kuan
King of Novelty Songs Yoyoy Villame was
a famous composer, singer, comedian, and
lyricist known for his catchy songs with clever
and humorous lyrics in English, Filipino, and
Cebuano. Butsikik, a parody of Dee Dee Sharps
Baby Cakes, is one of his most notable works.
Freddie Aguilar | Anak
Performed and sung by PN Bimbo Mills
Known as one of the best singer-songwriters
and folk musicians in the Philippines, Freddie
Aguilar is the genius behind the iconic song Anak,
which shattered Philippine charts in the late
70s, became a global hit with translations in 26
languages, and is one of the top OPM songs of all
time.
Sampaguita | Bonggahan
Performed and sung by Melanie Laggui
Sampaguita was the stage name of Filipino rock

and 80s. Tagged as the Queen of Rock Music,
Sampaguita is widely known for her songs that
are now considered OPM rock classics, among

Rico J. Puno | The Way We Were
Performed and sung by Boy Arteche
Dubbed as a total entertainer, Rico J. Puno
is a pop singer and TV host known for his
humorous performances, who started the trend
of inserting Filipino lyrics into English songs as
in his rendition of Barbra Streisands The Way
We Were. After more than four decades, hes still
active in the industry.
Hagibis | Katawan
Performed and sung by PDG Sid Garcia, PP
Freddie Borromeo, PP Eddie Yap, PE Fred
Pascual, Eddie Galvez and Bom Villatuya
Hagibis was a Village People-inspired singing
group formed in 1979. Famous for their macho
projection, they popularized macho songs such
as Katawan (body) and Legs which are still well
known today.
Eva Eugenio | Tukso
Performed and sung by Tisa Fernandez
Considered a Jukebox Queen, Eva Eugenio shone
as a popular singer onstage from the late 70s to
the early 80s. Her hit song Tukso is about fighting
temptation because it leads to the ruin of lives
and families.
Joey Albert | Tell Me
Performed and sung by First Ann Cecille
Dayrit
Joey Albert was a member of The Minstrels
before she broke away to become a multi-awarded
jazz and pop singer-songwriter, musician, and
lyricist. She began her solo career in 1982 and,
since then, has cut more than 20 albums. Tell Me
is one of her most popular songs.
Sharon Cuneta | Bituing Walang Ningning
Performed and sung by Mache Ackerman
Popular singer, actress, TV host, celebrity
endorser, and reality singing show judge, Sharon
Cuneta is the Philippines Megastar. Starting her

Master Rapper Francis Magalona was considered

rapper who went mainstream and successfully
fused rap and Pinoy rock, he was known for his
nationalism, a sentiment evident in his songs.
Basil Valdez | Ngayon at Kailanman
Performed and sung by Chito Cantada
Basil Valdez kicked off his career in the 70s as a
folk singer. He has been the countrys premier and
most esteemed balladeer whose songs continue
to resonate in the hearts of Filipinos. Ngayon at
Kailanman is among his most popular songs.
Hajji Alejandro | Kay Ganda ng Ating
Musika
Performed and sung by Louie Aseoche
Actor and singer Hajji Alejandro was considered a
pop star during his time in the spotlight in the 70s
and 80s. His song, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,
celebrates the beauty of Filipino music.
The Minstrels / Ikaw, Ako, Tayong Lahat
Magkakapatid
Performed and Sung by the RC Makati Cast
A band popular in the 70s, The Minstrels was
composed of Joey Albert, Louie Reyes, Pat
Castillo, Ding Mercado, Chad Borja and Eugene
Villaluz. Their memorable songs include Buhat,
Ikaw Lamang ang Mamahalin, Gulong ng
Palad, Balut and Ikaw, Ako, Tayong Lahat. .
. Magkakapatid. This last song speaks of the
oneness of all humankind, brothers and sisters
all beneath the skin, bound by common needs,
values, and dreams.

When time and mood permit, he strums his
guitar and when inspiration strikes, makes
guitar arrangements of popular songs.
His self-deprecating humor speaks
volumes of his character. After all, only a
humble person can make fun of himself or
have fun at his own expense. He recalls an
incident in high school where Fr. Antonio
Cuna, their Glee Club conductor whom they
loved, called him during a convocation to
play a solo guitar number that was not in
the program. Surprised out of his wits but
not wanting to embarrass the conductor,
he bravely strode up the stage and started
playing. In the middle of the piece, his
fingers got lost and he frozetry as he might,
he could not remember the chords. After
what seemed like forever, he summoned the
courage to get up and declare, Sorry, I forgot
the chords, and ran backstage as fast as he
could. He expected everyone to laugh at him
(these were callow high school kids, after
all); instead, they cheered and clapped. The
applause was deafening. That, he recalls
with a laugh, was the loudest applause I ever
got in my life. And it was, he noted, for the
greatest non-performance of his life.
Pres. Jun Jun is not going to forget his
lines tonight; he wont have to run backstage
either. But there will be applauseto usher in
what should be another banner year for the
Rotary Club of Makati. Last year, our battle
cry was At 51, Still No. 1. This year we say:
At 52, Were Good as New! while waving our
banner, Ikaw, Ako, Tayong Lahat!
N.B. If the surname Dayrit rings a bell,
thats because it shouldring a bell, that is.
The name is associated with the man who has
earned the honorific, Father of the VCO
virgin coconut oil, in case theres anyone
who hasnt been initiated to the fulfilled
promises of this product that has been hailed
as one of natures most precious gifts. That
manDr. Conrado Dayrit, Sr.is his father,
his namesake, actually, he being Conrado
III. There is yet another bell ringer in the

n the first of his 365 days as president
of the Rotary Club of Makati, Jun Jun
Dayrit set out early to break some

running errands for himself, hurrying home to
Rockwell, and rushing off with Ann Cecille to
Manila Hotel for the district handover program
that ended just an hour shy of Cinderella time,
before driving to Tagaytay for a weekend R & R 01

he had been up and about and on his feet for the
better part of Day 1 made him remark, with a
chuckle, that it looked like a foretaste of every
day of the year ahead.
Whatever is coming, though, he is ready
for it. He joined the Rotary Club of Makati
on the invitation of then former Minister of
Transportation Jose Totoy Dans, a member
of the Club and ninong at his wedding to his
first wife, Baby Fugoso, who passed away in
2004 and with whom he had two wonderful
children, Joel and Miya. Now on his 28th year 02
