System Specifications

Please refer to the PipelineStudio release notes for the latest system specifications.

Upgrading From PipelineStudio 2.6 and Above

In order to migrate as many settings from a previous installation of PipelineStudio as possible you
should install the latest release of PipelineStudio without uninstalling the previous release. For
example if you have 2.8 installed and have added items to the equipment libraries, the easiest way of
making the library data available in the new release is to allow the latest installer to backup any data
that can be preserved. The installer will then make sure that this data is reinstated once the new
release is installed.

Upgrading From Earlier Than PipelineStudio 2.6

If you are upgrading from a release of PipelineStudio earlier than PipelineStudio 2.6 you will need to
manually uninstall the previous release before installing this release of PipelineStudio. This can be
done by opening the control panel and selecting the Add / Remove Programs option. From there you
should uninstall the Excel Reporting Add-in for PipelineStudio (if installed) and from there uninstall
PipelineStudio.

Energy Solutions Integration

PipelineStudio is integrated with Energy Solutions suite of products, including PipelineManager and it
is recommended that a customer that has more than one Energy Solutions product contact the
Customer Care team at Energy Solutions for integration compatibility at ESI.Support@emerson.com
for further information prior to installing PipelineStudio.

Installing PipelineStudio
To install PipelineStudio a user account with Administrative privileges is required and it is also

recommended that you save any open documents and close all your Microsoft Windows applications
including any instances of PipelineStudio prior to starting installing PipelineStudio.

If you have the PipelineStudio media then insert it into in the appropriate drive:

If "Autoplay" is turned off on the drive where the PipelineStudio media is located the installation menu
will have to be launched manually, usually via clicking [Start] and choosing Run and entering the
following command:

<Media Drive >:\Launch.exe

where <Media Drive > is the single letter assigned to the drive where the PipelineStudio media is
located. Alternatively the installation menu may be launched by opening the media drive and the
double-clicking "Launch.exe".

If you downloaded the PipelineStudio self-extracting archive from the Energy-Solutions Web Site
then you should double click the self-extracting archive, choose an appropriate directory to extract the
files to and enter the password. The password is available from technical support for customers on
active product support and you should choose to extract the installation to a folder on a drive with
sufficient free disk space (>300MB). Once the archive has decompressed the installation menu may
be launched by opening the folder the archive was extracted to and the double-clicking "Launch.exe".

2
Installation Menu

The installation menu presents a

number of options which may be
selected with a mouse click:

Installation Pre-requisites

PipelineStudio uses a number of

components that can be shared by
numerous Windows applications.

The installer will check for the

presence of any components and list
any that need to be installed.

Requirements which you may see in

this list are as follows:

Sentinel System Driver (this is

actually optional, if you are not using
a hardware license key / bitlock then
this option is not required and you
may choose not to install this item)

Microsoft XML (MSXML 6.0) - this

comes pre-installed on Windows 7
and Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0

Please note that having only the
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 Client
Profile installed is not enough. The
installation needs to include
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
Extended. If you do not see the
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 entry
in the display seen on the right, then
you have at least Microsoft .NET
Framework 4.0 client profile
installed. It is advisable to verify that
you also have the extended profile
for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
also installed. Note: also that
Microsoft .NET Framework version
4.5 and 4.6 (Windows 10
Professional systems) are also
supported by PipelineStudio.

PipelineStudio Installation Known Issues

TZ Environment Variable

Using the TZ environment variable may affect your simulation if the variable differs from the Windows
Time Zone. When PipelineStudio is started it will inform you if there is a potential problem.

Security Key Incompatible with Driver for hard bitlock device

The symptom of this problem is that your PC fails to see the parallel port or USB Sentinel SuperPro
security key. When you try to launch PipelineStudio with the parallel port or USB bitlock attached and
your machine disconnected from the network you will see the following error message:

If you try to launch PipelineStudio with the parallel port or USB bitlock attached and your machine
connected to the network you will see the following error message followed by the above message:

This message and similar messages for GASandLIQUID and Liquid are generated because the
security key driver does not recognize the security key.

This problem only occurs when using versions 7 or higher of the security key driver in conjunction with
very old versions of the parallel port Sentinel SuperPro security keys with the batch number
9521L2202. The batch number can be found on the side of the bitlock. The current version of
PipelineStudio ships with version 7.5.0 of the security key driver and therefore if you see this problem
with a standalone bitlock then you should contact ESI.Support@emerson.com for assistance.

22
Network license manager connection

might be shown if the registry settings are not correct.

Press OK to continue. Note that similar dialogs might appear for GASandLIQUID and Liquid, before
the following dialog appears:

Press Cancel to continue. This is caused by the registry settings for the license server not being set
correctly at the following location:

Licensing -> License Servers

23
Correctly configured license server settings can be seen in the display below, where the network
license manager is installed at IP address: 172.21.1.27.

If entries do not exist at this location they can easily be created by right clicking and selecting New ->
String Value. Please note that the keys seen in the display above are case sensitive and need to be
created as seen above.

24

in into the correct location. These settings need to be updated before the Excel Add-in is installed.

Open Microsoft Excel 2013, open a

Blank workbook, and select the File
menu (top left).

Choose the [Options] menu / button

at the bottom of the menu.

From the Customize Ribbon section

Post Installation of PipelineStudio Excel Add-in (Contd)

The PipelineStudio Installation home screen will still be displayed. You should press the Exit button
to exit. The installation is now complete.

Note for Users who installed under an account with administrative privileges and / or have changed
accounts:

43
If you have installed the Excel Add-in using another Windows Login that has administration privileges
(for example because you do not have sufficient user privileges to install software) then once you
have logged back in under your normal user account you should perform the following steps:

Start Microsoft Excel and make sure the PipelineStudio Add-in is active via checking the
PipelineStudio item in the list of available add-ins from the Tools | Add-Ins. dialog;

Make the PipelineStudio Toolbar available by following the instructions in section 'Installing
the PipelineStudio Excel toolbar manually' below.

If in the future you re-install your copy of Microsoft Excel, you may have to re-install the
PipelineStudio add-in afterwards.

Note:

Before you can use the Excel Reporting you will need to run a clean (un-run) PipelineStudio
configuration. The quickest way to do this is to select one of the supplied templates presented to you
from the PipelineStudio File | New menu, save it with a different name to your simulation folder and
then perform a transient run. As well as generating the data necessary for the report, the reporting
templates will get copied to the correct location on your hard disk drive.

Installing the PipelineStudio Excel toolbar manually

If a message that the PipelineStudio Excel toolbar was not successfully installed was displayed or if
you cannot see the PipelineStudio toolbar when you start up Microsoft Excel; start Microsoft Excel
and choose the Toolbars tab on the Tools | Customize dialog. Make sure that the PipelineStudio
entry in the list is checked. This ensures that the PipelineStudio toolbar is visible, if the PipelineStudio
toolbar is not in the Toolbars list, please press Attach so that you can select from a new dialog. The
toolbar should look like that shown below:
