Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

The purpose was to put fear into the hearts of those in the church so that they wouldnt
ever commit sins against God.

Ethos/Pathos/Logos Example from the text Effective? Why or why not?

Ethos This that you have heard is
the case of every one of you
that are out of Christ.--That
world of misery, that take of
burning brimstone, is
extended abroad under you.
Yes, because he called out everyones
names that are out of Christ. That would
scare a lot of people into not sinning
against God in fear of being called out.

Pathos You probably are not
sensible of this; you find you
are kept out of hell, but do
not see the hand of God in it;
but look at other things, as
the good state of your bodily
constitution, your care of
your own life, and the means
you use for your own
preservation. But indeed
these things are nothing;...
Yes, because Jonathan is telling them, oh
you might feel safe, but you arent. God
sees everything and knows everything that
goes on, even if you feel youre in a good
state of body, but that still wont save you
from God taking you to the fiery pits of
hell.

Logos O sinner! Consider the
fearful danger you are in: it is
a great furnace of wrath, a
wide bottomless pit, full of
the fire of wrath, that you are
held over in the hand of that
God, whose wrath is
provoked and incensed as
much against you, as against
many of the damned in hell.
No, because its not logical. Theres no
real reason why these people should be
listening to him, and he doesnt really
know if these things will happen if you sin
against God. No one really ever knows, so
how can he use logic to persuade people
to believe that God will do these horrible
things if you do one thing wrong?

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God by Jonathan Edwards is a sermon to persuade

people of the church to not go against God by committing sins, and spoke of how if you did
commit a sin against God, your punishment will be unbearable, making it very effective in
persuasion. He uses phrases like You probably are not sensible of this; you find you are kept
out of hell, but do not see the hand of God in it; but look at other things, as the good state of your
bodily constitution, your care of your own life, and the means you use for your own preservation.
But indeed these things are nothing;... and This that you have heard is the case of every one of
you that are out of Christ.--That world of misery, that take of burning brimstone, is extended
abroad under you. to strike fear into people so that they will be persuaded to follow the
guidelines of the church or be rotting in hell in the afterlife. This sermon is very effective by the
way the words are written to use fear in persuasion.
