What is Music?

Course Proposal for EDUC 318

Course Overview

- 20-25 Students
- Open to grades 9-12
- Students of all experience levels and backgrounds are
welcome
- Meets everyday for an entire semester
- Emphasis on discussion, philosophy and of course music!
Course Objectives
This course seeks to accomplish the following goals:

- Expose students to a variety of styles from medieval music through late twentieth
century music.
- Facilitate development of philosophical argument building and formation of
educated opinions.
- Allows students a chance to listen to, perform and compose in a variety of styles
of classical music.
- Further the development of research and presentation skills in both written and
aural form.
Three Units:

1. A Brief Musical History

2. Influence and Adaptation

3. Is this Really Music?


Products that demonstrate learning
- Students will create a variety of compositions that will be combined into a
composition portfolio at the end of the year. This will include written notation,
and recordings of their work.

- Students will be responsible for a philosophical discussion and reflection journal


that can be observed to find advancements in critical thinking skills.

- Students will be responsible for a final research paper on a topic covered in the
class, which will show how their philosophical arguments and research skills have
advanced through the semester.
