INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND
DISCUSSION
Not everyone knows where they are going and may need help with directions from time
to time. Directions may be needed to get to a nearby town, or directions to the newest mall in
town or directions to the nearest rest room in a large building.
1. Asking Direction
In asking direction we are given how to ask a question to ask where a place is. Notice
the following expression:
a. How do I get to ? (Bagaimana saya bisa... ?)
b. What's the best way to ? (Apa cara terbaik untuk... ?)
c. Where is ? (Dimana...?)
d. Would you like to tell me the way to? (Maukah kamu memberitahuku jalan ke..?)
e. Can you help me? (Bisakah kamu membantuku.?)
f. Can you tell me the way to..? (Bisakah kamu memberitahuku jalan ke.?)
2. Giving Direction
In giving direction or known as a response from a question who asked someone to
someone who already knows clearly where the place is. There are 2 (two) kinds of responses,
among others :
a. Positive Response
Example :
1) Yes, of course
2) Certainly
3) Yes, sure
4) Go ahead
5) Turn left
6) Pass this street
7) Go down this street
b. Negative Response
Example :
1) No, Im sorry
2) I dont either know
3) Im a new comer
Dialogue 2
A girl : Pelita treet? Ok. From here you must go on this street, if you find the
intersection, you have to turn left. you will pass Al-Hilmah Bulukartos mosque.
and you will see the orange home, that is your friends home.
A girl : Follow me
Mira : Yes this is my aunty. please come in. thank you aunty, have accompanied him
We might add you: you walk two blocks west, and then you turn right. (Kita bisa
menambahkan " Anda " : Anda berjalan dua blok barat , dan kemudian Anda berbelok ke
kanan).
3. Examples
a. The pet store is beside/next to the shop.
b. The movie theater is between the post office and the coffee shop
c. A parking lot is adjacent to the bank
I don't know
6. Asking More Politely: Responding Positively (Meminta lebih sopan: menanggapi positive)
Excuse me, could you tell me where the post office is? ?( Permisi, bisa Anda ceritakan di
mana kantor pos?)
see now
uh, let me it's down this street about two blocks.
think(for a moment)
Thanks a lot.
Youre (very) welcome.
down
(you) go (straight) this street.
up
right
it's
just past
before
opposite
9. Giving Longer Directions
go (straight) down this street to the end of the block.
(You) go down this street (for two blocks) until you come to the high school. Make a left and
go to blocks (more). Cross the street, and its at the end of the block just past.
CONCLUSION
Asking direction means a conversation that we always use when we want to ask someone
where we are or where is the place that we want to go. Asking for directions is important, but it's
also easy to become confused when listening to someone giving directions. This is true even in
your own native language, so you can imagine how important it is to pay careful attention when
listening to someone provide directions in English.
