CONCEPT OF LEISURE,
RECREATION AND PLAY

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human

Rights states:

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including

reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic
holidays with pay (Article 24) and

Everyone has the right freely to participate in the

cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to
share in scientific advancement and its benefits
(Article 27)(as cited in Torkildsen, p.45).

Leisure and recreation are often considered to be

the same thing and used synonymously.

LOOK carefully with your beautiful on the

lecture notes, LISTEN diligently with your
and THINK smartly with your

The greek word schole leisure is non-work, but

also is associated with learning and culture.
The Latin word licere to be permitted /to be free

The french word loisir free time

Generally, leisure is defined in terms of freedom

from constraint, freedom to choose, time left over
after work or as free time after obligatory social
duties have been met ( Torkildsen, 2005).

LEISURE

Leisure as time
Leisure is free time and that is all.

Leisure as a state of being/an end in itself

Leisure is a state of mind; it is a way of being at
peace with oneself and what one is doingleisure
has one and only one essential criterion, and that
is the condition of perceived freedom.

Any activity carried out freely without constraint

may be considered to be leisure.

To leisure implies being engaged in an activity as

a free agent, and of ones choice.

Leisure as activity
Leisure is activity apart from the obligations of
work, family and society to which the
individual turns at will, for relaxation, diversion
or broadening his individual and his spontaneous
social participation, the free exercise of his
creative capacity.

RECREATION
Leisure as recreation
Most definitions focus to recreation as a form of
activity.
Apply the condition to social acceptance.

The Dictionary of Sociology defines recreation as

any activity pursued during leisure, either
individual or collective, that is free and
pleasureful, having its own immediate appeal,
not impelled by a delayed reward beyond itself
(as cited in Torkildsen, p.52).

Recreation as leisure activities

Recreation consists of activities/experiences
which are carried on voluntarily in leisure time.
They are chosen by the participants, either for
pleasure or to satisfy certain personal needs.
When provided as a part of organized community
programs, recreation must be designed to achieve
constructive goals.

Recreation is any form of leisure time

experience/activity in which it brings directly to
him (as cited in Torkildsen, p.52).

Recreation is an act/experience, selected by the

individual during his leisure time, to meet a
personal want or desire, primarily for his own
satisfaction (as cited in Torkildsen, p.52).

So much so that recreation to many people is

synonymous with physical recreation and sport.

The Recreation Management Training

Committee stated as their reference point: We
take recreation to mean any life-enhancing
experience which is the outcome of freely
chosen activity (as cited in Torkildsen, p.56).

It is imperative, they believe: recreation

experience occurs as a direct result of
involvement in a recreation activity.

It is an emotional condition providing inner

satisfactions and feelings of well-being.

SPORT

Sport is an informal or formally organized

physical activity, typically but not always
competitive and typically governed by a set of
rules and officials.

Activity to be identified as a sport typically

requires one or more of a number of
characteristics, including physical activity, skill,
competition and also regulations with officials to
enforce them (eg referee, umpires)

Gratton and Taylor (2000) suggested 3 categories

activities of sport:
1) A core of sports which have all the required
attributes, such as football and athletics
2) Physical, recreational but mainly non-
competitive activities, which include fitness
activities , most swimming and possibly long-
distance walking
3) Non-physical but competitive activities which
have institutional organization and are generally
accepted as sports, such as darts and snooker (as
cited in Taylor, 2011, p. 14).

CHILDRENS PLAY:
FOUNDATION OF LEISURE

We most often think of childrens play, going out

to play, playtime and playing games, BUT we use
the word in far wider contexts and situations.

Play is the cornerstone of leisure and recreation.

Through play:
Children acquire a range of skills

Children learns how to deal with new situations

quickly by linking together things they have
already learned
Children develop their physical, intellectual,
emotional, creative and social ability, the ability
skill of give-and-take and to live in harmony with
others.

Difficulties facing childrens play

To play, children need opportunities, with time
and space, free from constraints and dangers.

Can you think what factors mitigate against

childrens play??

THE PLEISURE PRINCIPLE

Torkildsen invented the word Pleisure.
Illustrate better than words the concept of the
pleasure experience at the heart of play,
recreation and leisure experience.

At the core of play, recreation and leisure, there

exist a number of similarities and overlaps, so
much so that we can use each word at times to
mean much the same thing.

Play: are found more in childrens play

Recreation: carries a badge of respectability
doing things that are good for you
Leisure: is a looser, more casual, less
constrained term than recreation and
encompasses a vast range of active and passive,
casual and serious pursuits.
