Install all screws firmly and flush with surfaces. Torque is not required except in
the assembly of the door to the doorframe, which was pre-assembled at the
factory.
Required Tools
The following hardware and other supplies are required to uncrate, assemble,
and install the Model 5407 and components.
To prevent leakage
and provide efficient
shielding, shielding
strip must be installed
correctly at all
sections of the inner
and outer corner
joints, rear wall, door
assembly, any
location where
components are
joined, and other
referenced locations.
Bronze wool (RP52201) must be tucked into the corners of the inner and outer
corner joints and wall and roof assemblies.
You must inventory each component when unpacking it from the crate. Follow
these guidelines to properly unpack and inventory components:
Before uncrating your Model 5407, see Unpacking and Acceptance on page 9.
The crates are assembled using #2 Phillips head screws to secure the side walls
and lids. Cross member 2-in x 4-in braces and foot blocks are nailed or screwed
into place, and may need to be pried out for removal.
See Required Tools on page 11 for the list of hardware and other supplies
required to uncrate, assemble, and install the Model 5407 and components.
CRATE A
1. Remove the top of the crate and inspect contents for damage, shifting, or loss of
materials.
2. Remove the cross member 2-in x 4-in braces securing the Model 5407 main housing
to the crate.
3. Remove screws from the crate walls, beginning from the bottom and working to the
top. Remove top screws on each side last.
5. Remove foot blocks, and then unlock the caster wheel brakes on the rear frame
assembly.
6. With assistance from several crewmembers, lift and roll the rear frame assembly from
the crate floor. Be careful of extrusions that extend below the floor panel.

assemblies. Otherwise, serious damage or injury may result.
25. Unwrap each of the eight acorn/sleeve assemblies attached to the septum plate.
26. Disassemble the M16 acorn nut (part # 931080) and sleeve spacer (part # 106223).
27. Make sure the KEVLAR braid (part # 890309) is knotted tightly inside each of the
bronze adjustment sleeves (part # 102425), and that it is securely fastened at the
septum assembly.
28. With assistance from several crewmembers, lift the septum into the main housing of
the Model 5407. Lift it high enough so one crewmember can slip the bronze
adjustment sleeves through the bottom roof of the Model 5407 while additional
crewmembers on the roof slip the sleeve spacer over the adjustment sleeve and lock
with the acorn nuts.
The adjustment of the septum height and tuning will be done using the
six adjustment brackets attached at the septum plate.
The height of the septum at the rear should be fixed at a distance of
11.00 inches from the underside of the Model 5407 roof to the center
line of the upper and lower transition channels at the rear of the septum
plate.
Adjustment heights of the other brackets need only align with the feed
septum without bowing at the join.
Centering of the septum plate will be done using the outer right and left
adjustment brackets attached to the septum plate outer edge brackets.

M6 brass nut (part # 930685). Fasten to the feed assembly.
ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS
Figure 8 on page 52
The screw threads must protrude through both septum plates but not beyond
the surface of the septum assemblies.
32. To fasten the rear septum assembly to the feed septum, move into the front of the
Model 5407. Using a Phillips screwdriver or screw gun, fasten them together with the
M4 x 6 Phillips flat-head screws (part # 930403) or M4 x 8 Phillips flat-head screws
(part # 930412).
33. If necessary, use a Phillips screwdriver to carefully loosen (but do not remove) the
rear septum adjustment brackets fastened to the KEVLAR braid. This will raise or
lower the rear septum to adjust the rear septum to the feed septum angle of
projection. A flashlight or utility lamp may be required.
Cleaning
Use only a clean and dry or damp cloth to remove dust, dirt,
and other debris from any painted surface of the Model 5407.
34. For good label and shielding strip adhesion, plus optimum performance of your
Model 5407, use isopropyl alcohol with clean wipes. Before proceeding to the rear
wall assembly, clean all interior surfaces.
ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS

41. Remove access panel (part # 106263) located on the rear wall of the Model 5407 to
access the PCB card assembly area. Discard the screws.
The rear access panel has the minimal amount of temporary screws to fasten it
to the wall of the Model 5407 and to provide easy access. A complete set of
replacement screws are included in the hardware kit.
42. Check the shielding strip located between the upper and lower transitions
(part # 106254, 106255) at the rear of the septum to make sure the shielding strips
are not damaged or obstructed.
43. Behind the panel are four aluminum adjustment brackets, consisting of
contact angles (part # 106256), PCB clamps (part # 106253), and thumbscrews
(part # 106364). You can raise or lower these brackets by loosening the 16 screws
directly below the access panel opening.
Using a screwdriver, loosen the four contact angle bracket screws and lower them.
Do not completely remove the screws. Complete removal of the screws may
cause the PCB card to fall, and may only be retrieved by removing and
replacing the entire rear wall.
44. The PCB clamps are mounted to the contact angles with four thumbscrews each.
Remove all 16 thumbscrews, plus the four PCB clamps from the four contact angles.
45. Insert one PCB card assembly (part # 106153), component side up, with either end
through the rear opening. Placement order is not critical. Position the PCB card
assembly parallel to the top of the contact angle.
With the PCB card assembly aligned with the septum and the contact angle, the
person on the outside must slowly insert the end of the PCB card assembly into the
end of the septum between the upper and lower transitions.
Insert the PCB assembly firmly into the septum transition channel all the way
(approximately 0.6 in).
47. Repeat the two-person process in step 46 for all four PCB card assemblies.
48. Replace the PCB clamps onto the contact angle and card assemblies. Fasten with
the 16 thumbscrews removed in step 44.
49. Adjust the height of the PCB card assemblies using the adjustment brackets as
described in step 43.
50. Re-secure the contact angles by tightening the 16 screws directly below the opening.
51. Inspect inside surface of the rear access panel to make sure shielding strip
(part # 890259) fingers face inward. See Figure 12 on page 56.
52. Firmly secure the rear access panel to the rear wall using M4 x 8 Phillips pan-head
screws (part # 930414).
53. Have the crewmember inside the Model 5407 move to the rear wall and push the
stuffer absorbers (part # 106397) into the vacant openings along the outside of the
outer two PCB assemblies, and along the outer right and left edges of the rear wall
absorbers.
You may need to cut the stuffers. Make sure that neither the absorbers nor stuffers
make contact with the PCB assemblies.
ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS
Figure 4 on page 48
54. Remove one of the two nuts from the fiber optic wavelength feedthrough assembly
(part # 102049).
55. Fit the threaded body into the wall of the Model 5407, making sure approximately
1/8 in of the body is inside the Model 5407, and the remainder of the body is outside.
56. Screw the brass nut on from inside the Model 5407. Fasten securely using channel
lock pliers or a crescent wrench.
57. For the Type N feedthrough (part # 514016), place the rubber grommet supplied with
the packaging over the threaded end, and then fit into the recessed lip.
58. Fit the threaded body into the wall of the Model 5407, and then screw the nut on from
the outside. Fasten securely using the appropriate 5/8-in wrench or socket. Do not
over torque, or you may damage the rubber grommet.

59. Before affixing labels, clean all surfaces and make sure they are free from debris.
60. Align and center labels, and press firmly to ensure proper adhesion.
Verify Performance
62. Completely wipe the Model 5407 with clean, dry towels. Use isopropyl alcohol on all
bare metal surfaces.
Use only a clean and dry or damp cloth to remove dust, dirt,
and other debris from any painted surface of the Model 5407.
63. See the Model 5400 Series Gigahertz Transverse Electromagnetic (GTEM!) Cell
Operation Manual for VSWR testing specifications.
