ThistestisdonetodeterminethewatercontentinsoilbycalciumcarbidemethodasperIS:2720(PartII)1973.Itisamethodforrapiddetermination
of water content from the gas pressure developed by the reaction of calcium carbide with the free water of the soil. From the calibrated scale of the
pressuregaugethepercentageofwaterontotalmassofwetsoilisobtainedandthesameisconvertedtowatercontentondrymassofsoil.

Apparatusrequired:
i)Metallicpressurevessel,withaclampforsealingthecup,alongwithagaugecalibratedinpercentagewatercontent
ii)Counterpoisedbalance,forweighingthesample
iii)Scoop,formeasuringtheabsorbent(CalciumCarbide)
iv)Steelballs3steelballsofabout12.5mmdia.and1steelballof25mmdia.
v)Onebottleoftheabsorbent(CalciumCarbide)

PREPARATIONOFSAMPLE
SandNospecialpreparation.Coarsepowdersmaybegroundandpulverized.CohesiveandplasticsoilSoilistestedwithadditionofsteelballinthe
pressurevessels.Thetestrequiresabout6gofsample.

ProceduretodetermineWaterContentInSoilByCalciumCarbideMethod
i)Setupthebalance,placethesampleinthepantillthemarkonthebalancearmmatcheswiththeindexmark.

ii)Checkthatthecupandthebodyareclean.

iii) Hold the body horizontally and gently deposit the levelled, scoopfull of the absorbent (Calcium Carbide) inside the
chamber.

iv)Transfertheweighedsoilfromthepantothecup.

v)Holdcupandchamberhorizontally,bringingthemtogetherwithoutdisturbingthesampleandtheabsorbent.

vi) Clamp the cup tightly into place. If the sample is bulky, reverse the above placement, that is, put the sample in the
chamberandtheabsorbentinthecup.

vii)Incaseofclayeysoils,placeallthe4steelballs(3smallerand1bigger)inthebodyalongwiththeabsorbent.

viii)Shaketheunitupanddownvigorouslyinthispositionforabout15seconds.

ix)Holdtheunithorizontally,rotatingitfor10seconds,sothattheballsrollaroundtheinnercircumferenceofthebody.

x)Restfor20seconds.

xi)Repeattheabovecycleuntilthepressuregaugereadingisconstantandnotethereading.Usuallyittakes4to8minutesto
achieveconstantreading.Thisisthewatercontent(m)obtainedonwetmassbasis.

xii)Finally,releasethepressureslowlybyopeningtheclampscrewandtakingthecupout,emptythecontentsandcleantheinstrumentwithabrush.
