ASME B31.

3 : MINIMUM PIPE WALL THICKNESS CALCULATION (INTERNAL PRESSURE

This spreadsheet calculates the minimum wall thickness necessary to withstand the internal pressure in accordance
with the requirements of Paragraph 304 of ASME B31.3,
The nominal wall thickness for stell piping in use for chemical plants and refineries is determined by the
following formula:
tmin = t + ctot = PD + ctot
where; 2(SE+Py)
P = internal design gauge pressure, psig. D = outside diameter of pipe, in.
tmin = minimum required thickness incl. mechanical, S = stress value from Table A-1 of ASME B31.3
corrosion and erosion allowances, (ctot), in. E = quality factor fr. Table A-1A or A-1B of ASME B31.3
t = pressure design thickness, as calculated in y = coefficient from Table 304.1.1, valid for t < D/6 and
accordance with para. 304.1.2 of ASME B31.3 for materials shown. The value of y may be
for internal pressure interpolated for intermediate temperatures
