FINENESS
SoweneedtodeterminethefinenessofcementbydrysievingasperIS:4031(Part1)1996.Theprincipleofthisisthatwedeterminetheproportionof
cementwhosegrainsizeislargerthenspecifiedmeshsize.
The apparatus used are 90m IS Sieve, Balance capable of weighing 10g to the nearest 10mg, A nylon or pure bristle brush, preferably with 25 to
40mm,bristle,forcleaningthesieve.
Sieveshowninpicbelowisnottheactual90mseive.Itsjustforreference.

Proceduretodeterminefinenessofcement
i)Weighapproximately10gofcementtothenearest0.01gandplaceitonthesieve.
ii)Agitatethesievebyswirling,planetaryandlinearmovements,untilnomorefinematerialpassesthroughit.
iii)WeightheresidueandexpressitsmassasapercentageR1,ofthequantityfirstplacedonthesievetothenearest0.1percent.
iv)Gentlybrushallthefinematerialoffthebaseofthesieve.
v)Repeatthewholeprocedureusingafresh10gsampletoobtainR2.ThencalculateRasthemeanofR1andR2asapercentage,expressedtothe
nearest0.1percent.Whentheresultsdifferbymorethan1percentabsolute,carryoutathirdsievingandcalculatethemeanofthethreevalues.
