continues to welcome new residents and workers, the devel-
oper is hoping to nearly double the square footage of two
previously-approved office buildings.
Master developer Wilson Meany will host a neighbor-
hood forum Monday evening to discuss its preliminary pro-
posal to increase the size of Station 1 and Station 5 two

PG&E: Someone elses wires

SAN FRANCISCO The deadliest of last
months wildfires in Californias wine coun-
try may have been started by electrical equip-
ment not owned or installed by Pacific Gas
and Electric Co., the utility said in a court fil-
ing.
PG&E said in a legal filing Thursday that a
preliminary investigation suggests that a
private power line may have started the blaze
that killed 21 people and destroyed more than
4,400 homes in Sonoma County. Another 22
people were killed and at least 4,500 more
structures were destroyed in Northern
California wildfires that began Oct. 8.
Although the cause of the fire that decimat-
ed a Santa Rosa neighborhood has not been
determined, preliminary investigations
suggest that this fire might have been caused
by electrical equipment that was owned,
installed and maintained by a third party,

Dems see momentum
for 2018 state elections

Sweeping Democratic victories in
Virginia and key gains in other 2017 state
legislative races have lifted Democratic
hopes of even bigger wins in next years
midterm elections, as they seek a greater
voice in how political districts will be
redrawn for the decade to come.
Democrats won the governors offices in
Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday, erased a
previously dominant Republican majority
in the Virginia House of Delegates and won
a special election that gave them control of
the Washington state Senate.
All told, Democrats flipped about two
dozen state legislative seats around the
country Tuesday and have now gained at
least 30 seats previously held by
Republicans since President Donald Trump
won election last year, reversing several
years of Republican momentum.
In general, this is a rebuke of Republican
governance of states, said Jessica Post,
executive director of the Democratic
Legislative Campaign Committee. She
added: The other thing it said is we can win
all across the country.
The fight for control of legislative cham-
bers matters not only for policies on health
care, taxes and education, but also because
the legislature in most states determines
how future congressional and state legisla-
tive districts are drawn. The next round of

Just five states had legislatures where each
party controlled one chamber, and several
of those involved bipartisan coalitions.

Daniel Francis Turner

Dan Turner passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2017,
with his wife Debbie by his side. Dan, a San Bruno native, had
recently moved to Grass Valley, CA with Debbie following his
recent retirement after a long career in the freight and shipping
industry.
Dan attended St. Roberts Grammar School and Serra High
School (Class of 1968). He then went on to graduate from
Seattle University in 1973, where he was manager of the basketball team and along
the way accumulated a wealth of lifelong friendships. He was passionate about music,
theatre arts, historical and classic literature, photography, golf, and above all, people.
How does one describe a life so well lived and full of love? Dan invested deeply
in the lives of his friends and family. He consistently took the time to listen and
celebrated both the big and small joys of life. Dan was always emotionally engaged
and present, whether in person or calling on the phone to check in, he gave his full
attention and heart. Among many other things, Dan was a great mentor to the younger
generation. He took such incredible interest in the lives of others, and had the gift of
making you feel important. Dan took pleasure in your accomplishments, and his good
nature and encouragement endeared him to everyone he knew.
To know Dan Turner was to be loved by Dan Turner. Love lives on forever.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Anne Turner, he leaves to cherish
his memory: his loving wife, Debbie Turner, his sister and best friend, Judie Turner
Harris, his brother-in-law, Stuart Harris, as well as scores of friends and extended
family members all who deeply mourn his passing.

square feet, and expand Station 5 from
95,000 square feet to 184,000 square feet,
according to a public notice. The five office
buildings are already slated to total 780,000
square feet of office space with stations 1
and 5 the smallest of the bunch along South
Delaware Street.
SurveyMonkey was the first tenant to hop
aboard Bay Meadows office offerings by
moving its corporate headquarters to
Station 4 from Palo Alto. That 210,000-
square-foot office building wrapped in
glass, is the largest and was completed first.
Station 3 offers 174,000 square feet and is
now leasing after recently wrapping up con-
struction. Ground was broken earlier this
year on Station 2, which will offer 189,000
square feet of Class A office space, accord-
ing to the Bay Meadows website.

The proposal includes removing a previ-
ously-approved six-level free-standing
parking garage at Station 1, and instead put-
ting required spaces underground or incorpo-
rated into the office buildings, according to
the notice.

Commission is expected to review the pro-
posal at a public hearing next year, accord-
ing to the city.
But the potential for another 179,000
square feet of space and the influx of addi-
tional jobs it could accommodate, has some
residents of surrounding neighborhoods
concerned.
While the entire 162-acre transit-oriented
development has been in the works for
decades, regional traffic congestion and the
job-to-housing imbalance is causing some
to question whether San Mateo can accom-
modate additional growth.
Dennis Murphy, president of the San
Mateo Glendale Village Neighborhood
Association, said the city should imple-
ment traffic calming measures before con-
sidering new developments. Abutting the
southern end of Bay Meadows, Murphy said
Glendale Village residents already have a
hard time exiting their neighborhood as
congestions backs up Hillsdale Boulevard
near Highway 101.
Our concern is the same concern as
everyone in San Mateo its just the traf-
fic, Murphy said.
He noted the Franklin Templeton head-
quarters expansion is slated to bring anoth-
er 240,000 square feet of office space and
cited the effects such increases could have
on exacerbating the housing crisis. Murphy
noted some have suggested senior housing
as a critical need and preferable use. While
not completely opposed to development,
its hard to accept the corresponding cars
that come with new office space, he said.
I dont think were against progress, we
just want it to be smart progress with a plan
and San Mateo doesnt have a plan right
now in regards to infrastructure to support
these additional projects, Murphy said.

mer horse race track is nearly 65 percent
complete with 18 acres of parks and open
space, nearly 1,600 residents moved in to

pacts and delivered a roaring America
first message Friday, denouncing
China for unfair trade practices just a
day after he had heaped praise on
President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
We are not going to let the United
States be taken advantage of any-
more, Trump told CEOs on the side-
lines of the Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation conference. I am always
going to put America first, the same
way that I expect all of you in this
room to put your countries first.
The president who pulled the
United States out of the Pacific Rim
trade pact known as the Trans-Pacific
Partnership said the U.S. would no
longer join large agreements that tie
our hands, surrender our sovereignty
and make meaningful enforcement
practically impossible.
Instead, he said, the U.S. will pursue
one-on-one trade deals with other
nations that pledge fair and reciprocal
trade.
As for China, Trump said hed spo-
ken openly and directly with Xi
about the nations abusive trade prac-
tices and the enormous trade deficits
they have produces with the United
States.
It was a stark change in tone from
the day before, when Trump was Xis
guest of honor during a state visit in

Beijing. There, Trump opted for flat-
tering Xi and blaming past U.S. presi-
dents for the trade deficit.
Trump said Chinas trade surplus,
which stood at $223 billion for the
first 10 months of the year, was unac-

not blame China or any other coun-
try for taking advantage of the
United States on trade.

After Islamic State collapse, Syria
government faces U.S.-backed Kurds

BEIRUT With the fall of the
Islamic State groups last significant
stronghold in Syria, Iranian and
Russian-backed Syrian troops now
turn to face off with their main rival,
the U.S.-backed forces holding large
oil fields and strategic territory in the
countrys north and east.
The complicated map puts U.S. and
Iranian forces at close proximity, just
across the Euphrates River from each
other, amid multiple hotspots that
could turn violent, particularly in the
absence of a clear American policy.
There are already signs.
Iran threatened last week that Syrian
troops will advance toward Raqqa, the
former IS capital, which fell to the
U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces
in October, raising the potential for a
clash there. The Kurdish-led SDF also
controls some of Syrias largest oil
fields, in the oil-rich eastern Deir el-
Zour province, an essential resource
that the Syrian government also says
it will take back.
The question now is whether the
United States is willing to confront
the troops of Syrian President Bashar
Assad and Iranian-backed militiamen.
The Kurds are seeking a clear American
commitment to help them defend their
gains. American officials have said lit-
tle of their plans and objectives in
Syria beyond general statements about
continuing to deny IS safe havens and
continuing to train and equip allies.

How they got it there is probably
something that will continue to be
investigated over time, the lieutenant
general said. What has been demon-
strated and shown based on the findings
of that missile is that it had Iranian
markings on it. That in itself provides
evidence of where it came from.
The Houthis have described using
Burkan-2 or Volcano Scud variants in
their recent attacks, including the one
Nov. 4. Those missiles are reminiscent
of the Qiam, wrote Jeremy Binnie of
Janes Defense Weekly in a February
analysis.
The Burkan-2 is likely to heighten
suspicions that Iran is helping Yemens
rebel forces to develop their ballistic
missile capabilities, Binnie wrote.

family scion shatters royal entente
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates Among those caught in
the unprecedented arrests this week of top princes, wealthy
businessmen and senior officials was the scion of one of
Saudi Arabias most recognizable families: Bakr Binladin,
the chairman of the kingdoms pre-eminent contractor
and Osama bin Ladens half-brother.
It was a stunning end to a decades-old alliance between the
ruling Al Saud and Binladin families that saw the Saudi
Binladin Group secure a near-monopoly on mega-expan-
sion projects in Islams two holiest sites, Mecca and
Medina, throughout the reigns of successive Saudi mon-
archs.
The government says 201 people have been taken into
custody in the purge, which comes amid an anti-corruption
probe it says uncovered at least $100 billion in graft and
embezzlement.
Saudi critics and experts have called the arrests a bold and
risky move by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aimed
at consolidating power as he sidelines potential rivals,
silences critics and dismantles alliances built with other
branches of the royal family.
The 32-year-old crown prince, who is the son of King
Salman and is popularly known by his initials MBS, is
leading the anti-corruption investigation. Hes also the
force behind the so-called Vision 2030 plan, a blueprint for
how to restructure the country and wean it from its depend-
ence on oil revenue.
The arrests of Binladin and the others not only signal the
end of old alliances, but also speak to the larger demands

Sri Lanka govt faces pressure
over torture, rape allegations
GENEVA Sri Lankas government faced increasing
pressure Friday to answer for alleged human rights viola-
tions following a recent war crimes lawsuit and allegations
from over 50 men who said they were raped, branded or tor-
tured as recently as this year.
The mens anguished descriptions of their abuses come
nearly a decade after Sri Lankas civil war ended and days
ahead of a review of the Indian Ocean nation by the U.N.s
top human rights body.
Doctors, psychologists, lawmakers and rights groups
have appealed to the United Nations to investigate new
allegations published by the Associated Press on
Wednesday.
The AP reviewed 32 medical and psychological evalua-
tions and interviewed 20 men who said they were accused of
trying to revive a rebel group on the losing side of Sri
Lankas 26-year civil war.
Although combat ended in 2009, they say the torture and
abuse occurred from early 2016 to as recently as July this
year.
Someone has to do something about this, said Dr.
Frank Arnold, one of several doctors who wrote to U.N.
Human Rights chief Zeid Raad al-Hussein and called for an
independent investigation into the Sri Lankan torture alle-
gations.

Stocks on two-day losing streak

NEW YORK So thats what a
losing streak feels like. Stocks
fell for the second day in a row
Friday, which hadnt happened in
a month, as Amazon put a scare
into yet another industry: medical
device and health care equipment
companies.
Those companies slumped after
an analyst for Citi Investment
Research said Amazon might be
on the verge of shaking up their
industry by speeding up distribu-
tion and cutting prices. Energy
companies gave up some of their
recent gains while retailers, media
companies and household goods
companies moved higher. Stocks
finished the week with small loss-
es, ending an eight-week winning
streak.
One factor in those losses was
uncertainty over the Republican
plan to cut taxes. Stocks dipped
Thursday after Senate Republicans
proposed leaving corporate tax
rates alone in 2018 before cutting
them in 2019. That surprised
investors, who pulled stocks
down slightly from their recent
record highs.
We would expect a little bit
more of that as we get more delays
and uncertainty in the tax plan,
said Sean Lynch, the co-head of
global equity strategy for Wells
Fargo Investment Institute. Lynch
said an eventual tax cut for compa-
nies, and for at least some individ-
uals, would give investors a dose
of confidence that company earn-
ings will grow a bit faster and the
economy and stock market will
rise for a bit longer.
The Standard & Poors 500
index lost 2.32 points, or 0.1 per-
cent, to 2,582.30. The Dow Jones
industrial average slid 39. 73
points, or 0. 2 percent, to
23,422.21. The Nasdaq composite

U.K. panel rules Uber drivers have rights on wages, time off

LONDON Uber lost the latest
round in the battle over its operat-
ing model Friday, when a British
panel ruled that the companys
drivers are workers, not independ-
ent contractors, in a decision with
broad implications for the so-
called gig economy.
The Employment Appeal
Tribunal upheld a lower panels

drivers in this case were workers
under British law and therefore
should receive the minimum wage
and paid holidays. Uber said it
would appeal.
Judge Jennifer Eady rejected

ers make well above the minimum

the case to be heard by higher
courts as early as next year.
Almost all taxi and private hire
drivers have been self-employed
for decades, long before our app

son why drivers use Uber is because
they value the freedom to choose
if, when and where they drive and

San Francisco-based Uber has
expanded rapidly around the world

That has drawn protests from taxi
drivers who say Uber and similar

former drivers covered by Fridays

40,000 drivers use the platform in

the number had grown since the

Things were just a little off for
the Half Moon Bay football team
as it traveled to Atherton to face
off against Sacred Heart Prep in the
regular-season nale.
This was that Week 7 matchup
that was postponed because of the
Northern California wildres. It
was also one of those rare after-
noon games on a day there was no
school.
And just to cap off the weird-
ness, the Cougars were without
one of their top offensive threats
as running back Chase Hofmann
had limited touches because of a
broken right hand.
And then there was the fact that
the Gators were playing for a
whole lot of pride and it all added
up to a rare Half Moon Bay decit,
6-0, after one quarter.
The Cougars eventually got into
its comfort zone, however, and
pulled away for a 40-26 win to cap
a perfect 10-0 regular season.
As you could tell from our start,
it was a little weird, said Half
Moon Bay senior quarterback
Gavin Tomberlin.
Sacred Heart Prep (1-4 PAL Bay,
3-7 overall) did everything in its
power to keep Half Moon Bay (5-
0, 10-0) from attaining that per-
fect regular-season mark. And
unlike the Cougars, the Gators
were in a rhythm from the opening
kickoff, which they took 80 yards
on nine plays for a touchdown.
They converted a fourth-and-4
from their own 40 to keep the
drive alive before quarterback Brad
Yaffe found a wide open Kyle Cody
over the middle that he turned into
a 38-yard touchdown. A blocked
extra point from HMBs Hofmann
kept the score 6-0.

MOUNTAIN VIEWNio Ma wanted to
wait until the Serra Padres landmark win was
on ice before celebrating.
Just before the nal play, with the Padres
on their way to a 31-21 victory over rival
St. Francis, the celebration began. Swaying
back and forth with a celebratory dance,
Ma pointed to the Serra fans in the visiting
bleachers at Calcagno Stadium, prompting
them to make some noise.
When the game was over, it was hard to
contain my emotions, Ma said. It was
just: Lets go!
The time between Serra scoring the go-
ahead points on a 34-yard eld goal by
Daniel Lewis in the fourth quarter and Mas
celebration was mere minutes. But the
Padres celebrating an outright West
Catholic Athletic League championship was
generations in the making, a feat they
achieved Friday night for the rst time since
1969.
Serra head coach Patrick Walsh also exer-
cised patience in celebrating this historic
season. When asked during a postgame
interview about downplaying the potential
accomplishment earlier in the week, he did-
nt hesitate to recognize it.
It is a great accomplishment, Walsh
said. I just didnt want us to get caught up in
ghosts. I wanted to chase the present.
At the outset of the regular-season nale at
St. Francis a game that was rescheduled
from earlier in the season due to cancela-
tions from poor air quality as a result from
the North Bay res it didnt seem the
Padres were going to have to wait long to
celebrate. Serra seemed intent on putting the
game away early, opening with a torrid pace,
scoring on each of its rst three posses-
sions to take a 21-0 lead less than a minute
into the second quarter.

dominant fashion, routing a fellow Top 10
team.
Mitchell scored 30 points and Stephanie
Mavunga added 17 points and a career-high
26 rebounds to help No. 5 Ohio State to an
85-64 win over 10th-ranked Stanford on
Friday night in the season opener for both
teams.
Leading 46-40 entering the second half,
Ohio State dominated the pace of play in the
third quarter, outscoring the Cardinal 24-14,
despite shooting just 6 of 22 from the field
in the quarter. The Buckeyes made 11-of-13
free throws in the period.
Each player on our team can do some-
thing special and I think that showed,
Mitchell said. And I think we can only get
better from here.
In the fourth, Mitchell put Ohio State up
21 with a 3-pointer at 8:03 remaining. The
basket moved her into second on the
Buckeyes all-time scoring list with 2,583
points.
Brittany McPhee scored 24 points to lead
Stanford.
Ohio State controlled the glass for four
quarters, grabbing 64 rebounds compared to
41 for Stanford. Mavunga bested her previ-
ous career-high of 17 rebounds with 21 sec-
onds remaining in the third quarter. She had
14 of Ohio States 28 offensive rebounds.
Stanford tallied nine offensive rebounds.
Returning just two starters from last sea-
son, Stanford struggled to find scoring
against an Ohio State defense that ranked
313th in total defense last season. The
Cardinal shot 37 percent from the field com-
pared to Ohio States 35 percent, but turned
the ball over 15 times and had 19 fewer
shots.
No other players were in double figures for
Stanford.

Giants-49ers set to wage historic battle of the worsts

SANTA CLARA The New York Giants
are coming off a 34-point loss at home,
have several key players on injured reserve,
and have won one game in a rough first half
of the season.
As bad as things are for the Giants, they
are even worse for the San Francisco 49ers
(0-9), who are still seeking their first win
under coach Kyle Shanahan. They lost three
more players to season-

Right now, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan
would take that kind of win for the first in
his career and help validate owner Jed Yorks
decision to hire him last offseason.

The Mustangs ended the season on a high
note, winning their last two games.
Trailing 10-7, Capuchino (2-3 PAL Lake,
4-6 overall) scored the game-winning
touchdown with four minutes left to play.
San Mateo (2-3, 6-4) had its chances to win
late, but a Mustangs interception thwarted
one opportunity and a running-into-the-
punter penalty negated any last-minute
heroics.
The Bearcats took a 7-0 lead late in the
first quarter when quarterback Jose
Ontiveros hooked up with Anthony
Villalobos for a 24-yard scoring strike.
The Mustangs tied the score with five
minutes left in the second quarter on a Trey
Zahursky 25-yard touchdown pass.
A Jake Jeffries 23-yard field goal late in
the third quarter gave San Mateo a 10-7
advantage, but Capuchino scored on a 2-
yard run with four minutes left to play.

match postponed again
For the second day in a row, the Knights quar-
terfinal match in the Central Coast Section team
tournament against Los Altos was postponed
because of weather.
The match between the fourth-seeded Knights
and the fifth-seeded Falcons was originally
scheduled for Thursday, but the match was
rescheduled for Friday.
That weather has also pushed the CCS cham-
pionship match to Monday.
The Falcons and Knights will meet in
Atherton at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the winner
immediately driving to Lynbrook for a 2 p.m.
semifinal match.

from a yard out on his teams first possession
in extra time, TKA (3-2, 4-6) scored to cut the
deficit to 44-42 and then won it with a suc-
cessful 2-point conversion.
Hulman went over the 200-yard rushing
mark for the third time this season as he car-
ried the ball 28 times for 292 yards and three
touchdowns. He finished the regular season
with 1,635 yard rushing.
Quarterback Jeremy Teteak ran for a pair of
touchdowns and threw for a third as he racked
up 250 yards of total offense 198 passing
and 52 rushing.
TKA was led by quarterback Chris
Boccignone, who completed 13 of 21 passes
for 217 yards and two touchdown passes, both
to Kevin Sielski.

Demarii Blanks scored three touchdowns
and Anthony Arteaga added a pair to lead the
Scots to a lopsided win over the Vikings in the
regular-season finale for both teams.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak
for the Carlmont.
Blanks scored on rushes of 2 and 47, while
also adding a 100-yard fumble return for a third
score. Arteaga scored on a 41-yard run to open

Ive said this for some time but I think Coach Bennett is
the best coach in the country. I really do, Ganot said. To do
what he has done at SMC for that long and with continued
success to come in the future is amazing if you take a hard
look at it. People will point to that level of success and talk
a lot about how its been done with limited resources. Thats
a bit of a disservice. Take that out of the equation. This is
one of the best stories in college basketball. ... Coach is
about development. Always has and always will and that its
bigger than just the games. Hes about developing future
leaders, outstanding husbands and fathers. He cares deeply
about the people in his program. Its those reasons why he
is so good for the game and world. We need more like him.

recipient, as he nished with seven catches
for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
Their offense is strong, Tomberlin said.
The Cougars, meanwhile, went three and
out on their rst possession and after forc-
ing the Gators to punt, SHP kept the ball
after the punt bounced off a HMB player who
was running downeld.
The HMB defense held, however, and
forced the Gators to turned the ball over on
downs.
HMB coach Keith Holden wasted little
time in going to his teams jumbo pack-
age, which is the Cougars triple-option
set. Normally used to put games away,
Holden turned to it on his teams second
possession to try and nd a spark. It didnt
really have the desired effect as the Cougars
were forced to punt on the second play of the
second quarter, trailing 6-0.
HMB caught a break, however, when a
SHP player was blocked into his punt
returner, who then fumbled the ball, which
was recovered by HMBs Tristan Hofmann.
That provided the spark the Cougars need-
ed. With new life at the SHP 14, HMB need-
ed just three plays to nd the end zone.
Chase Hofmann, who carried the ball only

nine times for 30 yards, scored on a 1-yard
plunge. He would later added another 1-yard
touchdown.
He didnt practice Monday or Tuesday.
We got the X-ray read Wednesday.
Wednesday we tested it out. If he could go,
we would see how much we needed him,
Holden said.
Hofmanns rst score, coupled with a
Dylan Williams extra point, gave HMB a 7-
6 advantage a lead it would not relin-
quish.
But with SHP making a concerted effort to
stop HMBs ground attack, the Cougars
were held to just 152 yards on the ground, it
enabled Tomberlin to open up and show
what he can do when given a chance to
throw. He responded with a season-high
211-yard performance and three touchdown
passes a perfect 23-yard fade to Williams,
and a pair to Hayden Von Almen of 3 and 25
yards.
With Chase Hofmann limited on offense,
Tomberlin gured he might get a chance to
air it out a little bit.
I felt like we were going to go to the air
more, Tomberlin said. I dont get (to do)
that too much.
After taking the lead, the HMB defense
forced a punt on SHPs next possession and
the Cougars needed three plays to cover 60
yards. On second-and-6, Tomberlin hooked
up with Jake Quosig for a 33-yard gain down
to the SHP 23 before Tomberlin found
Williams down the right sideline and placed

a perfect pass into his hands for a 14-6 HMB
lead.
Williams booted a 24-yard eld goal for a
17-6 lead with just under three minutes left
in the rst half, but both teams managed to
score before halftime. SHPs Tommy Barnds
ran it in from 5 yards out before HMB went
74 yards with just over a minute to play and
scored on a Tomberlin-to-Von Almen 3-yard
scoring toss for a 23-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars scored 10
points just over two minutes apart to take a
commanding lead. Williams kicked a 37-
yard eld goal on the rst drive of the third
quarter. HMBs Dom Padua came up with an
interception on the next play and the
Cougars turned that into a four-play, 52-yard
scoring drive, with Tomberlin hitting Von
Almen on a slant for a 25-yard score and a
33-12 lead.
SHP would go on to score two more times,
with Yaffe scoring from 2 yards out and later
hooking up with Cody for a 17-yard score,
sandwiched around another Chase Hofmann
1-yard score.
With the regular season over, the Cougars
now turn their attention to the playoffs,
where they are expected to be the No. 1 seed
in the Open Division III bracket.
But Tomberlin knows that 10-0 means
nothing now.

Padres quarterback Luke Bottari led the
rst-half charge. In the opening half, Serra
gained 210 total yards, 202 of them via the
air from Bottari. On the night, the junior
QB was 16-of-24 passing for 289 yards and
three touchdowns.
But many of Bottaris early completions
were a result of broken assignments in the
St. Francis secondary leaving receivers
wide open. When the Lancers relaxed their
secondary, the momentum of the game
turned quickly. And while the Padres didnt
seem worried after St. Francis scored on a 3-
yard scoring pass from Reed Vettel to Evan
Williams to cut the lead to 21-7 just before
halftime, the Lancers succeeded in evoking
plenty of worries after the break.
There werent worries, said Chris Park,
the Serra cornerback who was guarding
Williams when the receiver got airborne for
an impressive grab. It was just a player
making a play. They played well in the
third quarter but we made a point to win the
fourth.
St. Francis turned the tide in a hurry in the
third quarter on a big play by the WCALs
leading rusher Darrell Page. The junior took
the slightest amount of daylight, then ran
over about ve would-be tacklers to bolt up
the sideline for an 80-yard touchdown, cut-
ting the lead to 21-13 with 2:43 remaining
in the third quarter.
After Lewis missed a 40-yard eld-goal
attempt at the end of the next Serra drive, St.
Francis went to work on a nine-play, 80-
yard scoring drive on a 9-yard TD run by
Page, followed by an acrobatic 2-point con-
version catch by Josh Pakola to tie it 21-21
with 8:41 remaining.
Two plays later, though, Serra took the
momentum back when Bottari hit senior
running back Isiah Kendrick over the mid-
dle, and Kendrick sprinted for a 64-yard
advance to the St. Francis 14. With a wind-
ed Kendrick taking a break, Serra couldnt
advance the ball, but settled for Lewis eld-
goal redemption as he hit an end-over-end
kick that just cleared the crossbar to give
the Padres a 24-21 lead.
Kendrick re-entered on defense and made a
game-saving tackle on the next play from
scrimmage, taking down Page who
totaled 23 carries for 165 yards after a 14-
yard run. Four plays later, St. Francis was
forced to punt.
Then Park, after yielding St. Francis rst
score, got his redemption as well. Serra
took over at its own 32, and on the rst play
of the drive, Bottari his Park over the mid-
dle and the speedster looked up eld at noth-
ing but daylight. The result was a 68-yard
scoring catch to all but put the game on ice.
I just saw a big hole, Park said. They
made some great blocks, opened up a hole
and I just ran.
Serras three early scores were set up by a
key Bottari completion on the games third
play from scrimmage. Facing third-and-9
from the Serra 21, Bottari hit Patrick Nunn
over the middle for a 35-ayrd pickup. Five
plays later, Kendrick scored on a 3-yard run
to make it 7-0.
Later in the opening quarter, Bottari
delivered a pass to Park, who bolted 69
yards for a score. Park had ve catches for
148 yards in the game.
Then after a St. Francis punt, Serra
marched 84 yards on 10 plays, culminating
in a 9-yard scoring pass from Bottari to
Nunn.
On defense, the saving grace of Serras
secondary was junior cornerback David
Coker, who defended nearly every pass that
came his way. Coker was a call-up during the
CCS playoffs last year. This is his rst full
varsity season.
Id say this is on one of my best
(games), Coker said. I was just ready for
their routes and studied lms a lot.
At the end of Parks nal TD run, Walsh
may have bolted down the sideline even
faster in celebration. It was a clear display
of emotion from a coach who, albeit often
reserved, wears his emotions on his sleeve
with the best of them.
I love coaching, Walsh said. I love the
kids. And Im thrilled for the community.
Its like (the movie) Shawshank
Redemption with the guys all up on the
roof enjoying what theyve accomplished.

The latest players to go down for the

Francisco has been hit especially hard at
safety, where Jimmie Ward already was lost
to a broken arm, and tight end, where starter
George Kittle is out this week with an ankle
injury.
Ive never been a part of a team where its
been like this, Shanahan said. But teams
do have to deal with this type of stuff all the
time, especially this time of the year.
Jenkins returns
The Giants will get back cornerback
Janoris Jenkins this week. He was suspend-
ed for the loss to the Rams when he didnt
report back to the team in time for practices
after the bye week. Coach Ben McAdoo said
Jenkins will regain his starting role this
week.

ST. MICHAEL, Minn. A Minnesota
high school football team scored three
touchdowns in the final minute of a playoff
game to rally for a stunning two-point win.
The rally began as Maple Grove trailed
St. Michael-Albertville 27-10 with 59 sec-
onds remaining in Thursdays Class 6A
quarterfinal game.
Maple Grove recovered two onside kicks
and scored three times, twice on passes and
once on a run with 4 seconds left to win 29-
27.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports
that Maple Grove coach Matt Lombardi
joked to his team afterward, Just like we

It Cant Happen Here seems eerily timely

As if the current political climate werent
worrisome enough for many people,
Foothill Theatre Arts presents It Cant
Happen Here.
It chronicles the rise of a populist presi-
dential candidate who promises better
times, wins the office and then oversees the
countrys rapid demise into fascism and
repression.
Sinclair Lewis wrote his prescient novel
in 1935 when rabble-rousing Huey Long
was running for president (he was assassi-
nated before being nominated) against

Thomas Times plays Buzz Windrip, the
charismatic candidate whose stump speech
sounds like a revival meeting. Times is
black, thus negating racial aspects, but its
unlikely that a black man would win the
presidency in the 1930s. However, Times
does such a good job that its easy to sus-
pend disbelief.
As Windrip gains traction, Doremus
Jessup (Vic Prosak), a liberal newspaper
editor in a small Vermont town, abhors what
hes doing but tries to understand his
appeal. Jessups strongest supporter is
Lorinda (Carla Befera), an innkeeper whos
also his girlfriend, even though hes mar-

Kristen Stewart dives into
grief in directorial debut

NEW YORK Kristen Stewarts directing
ambitions go all the way back to when she
was an 11-year-old performing in the 2002
David Fincher thriller Panic Room.
I was working with Jodie Foster and I was
like, Im going to direct. Im going to be
the youngest director that exists, Stewart
recalled in an interview. When she, years
later, told Foster she was finally making
something, Stewart says, She was like,
Dude, the first thing youre going to realize
is that you have nothing to learn.
It took longer than Stewart expected, but
she has now made a short film titled Come
Swim. Following premieres at the Sundance
Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival,
Come Swim debuted Friday on the
womens entertainment and lifestyles web-
site Refinery29.
The film announces Stewarts filmmaking
ambitions and opens a new chapter in the
fast-moving career of the 27-year-old
actress. Stewart is already developing sever-
al other projects, including a script shes
writing thats an adaptation of a memoir
(Stewart declined to say whose). Shes tak-
ing two months off acting to write it, and she
also hopes to turn Come Swim into a fea-
ture-length film.
Its my first step into something Ive
wanted to for a really long time, said
Stewart.
Stewart spoke in a pair of interviews
one on a balcony in Cannes in May, the
other by phone on Thursday. As to the recent
sexual harassment scandals that have
swamped Hollywood, Stewart pointed to her
speech last month at Elles Women in
Hollywood event, where she spoke about the
less-noticed harassment of below-the-line

comments Thursday but

express themselves freely and its awesome
that were living in a time where they can.
Come Swim isnt your standard actor-
made directorial debut. Its an 18-minute
metaphorical rendering of a feeling, of the
overwhelming oppression of heartbreak and
grief. A man is submerged, literally, by water
everywhere. Stewart describes the film as
about aggrandized pain and says its
imagery has haunted her for four years.
You dont realize when youre trudging
through that water, you feel so alone, says
Stewart. Weve all been there. But when
youre in it, you feel like you cant partici-
pate in life.
In many ways, Come Swim reflects
something essential about Stewart: she is
hyper alert to her surroundings and her emo-
tions. Its a quality that has probably helped
make her, in the eyes of many, a performer of
twitchy, alive sensitivity.
I am so sensitive it drives me crazy, says
Stewart. Its funny (that) the first movie I
wanted to make was basically just a movie

perennially popular Peter Pan, the
enchanting story of an orphan boy
who can fly but who doesnt want to
grow up.
In J.M. Barries play, turned into a
musical by lyricist Carolyn Leigh and
composer Morris Charlap, Peter
(Corrie Farbstein) lives in Neverland.
He and his fairy sidekick, Tinker Bell,
visit the Darling children in London to
retrieve his shadow.
He convinces the oldest, Wendy
(Brittney Mignano), to fly with him to
Neverland. Theyre joined by her
brothers, John (Amay Goel) and
Michael (Billy Hutton). They really do
fly.
In Neverland, they meet the Lost
Boys and experience hair-raising
adventures, most of them initiated by

Nature offers tangible experiences that provide refuge
from the monotony of fabricated curricula, which many
students view as only a means to an end. It provides one
with challenge, exhilaration and perspective that is not
found in suburban living. While personal electronic
devices and the social networking services within them
seek to place the user at the center of their own virtual
world of friends and accounts of experiences, the incom-
prehensible scale of nature emphasizes the existence of
each individual as part of a larger system, which counter-
acts the narcissism generated by social media. The use of
technology in the classroom, extracurricular activities and
free time serves almost exclusively to connect. The appeal
and magic of it is rooted in the potential for it to unite
people across rooms, towns and countries in an effort to
generate collaboration. While these hypothetical benefits
are undeniable, the value of self reflection that can only
occur when sequestered to your own thoughts cannot be
underscored. Complete immersion in nature focuses your
senses on a more primitive mindset, which provides clari-
ty and understanding in the face of stress from daily life.
The anxiety students face is often traced back to obliga-
tions as well as hopes and expectations about the future;
facing nature challenges one to live in a single moment
and place in time.
Nature is not clearly defined and is a malleable idea that
is unique for all people. Limited access to desolate areas
and extreme environments does not limit ones ability to
walk outside, hike, fish or swim. While individual activi-
ties vary with preference, the benefits nature provides are
universally attainable.

Skillfully directed by Bruce McLeod, the large cast is a
mix of students and community members, the latter led by
Prosak and Befera, who provide solid grounding to the
action.
Some other noteworthy performers are Alexis Standridge
as Sissy, Jessups loyal daughter; and Seton Chiang, who
does double duty as Bishop Prang, the evangelical church-
man who endorses Windrip, and as Effingham Swan, the
menacing militiaman who grills Jessup after his capture.
Running about two hours with one intermission, this
scary play nevertheless ends on an updated, hopeful note
with the actors on their smartphones texting Make
America human again. Its worth seeing.

WITH A TURN OF THE WHEEL:
TRAVEL NORTH CAROLINAS POT-
TERY HIGHWAY. Its official name is
North Carolina Highway 705 (NC 705) but
it is better known as the Pottery Highway.
The towns along this 26-mile stretch of sce-
nic byway are home to about 100 potteries,
many of them clustered around the hamlet of
Seagrove, where eighth- and ninth-genera-
tion potters produce hand-turned or hand-
thrown pottery. Pottery making has flour-
ished in the area since before the American
Revolution, anchored in the high quality
local clay. Thousands of visitors now come
annually to watch the craft tradition carried
out and to take home locally made pieces.
ORIGINAL OWENS POTTERY. The
oldest, continuously operating pottery
along the Pottery Highway is Owens
Pottery of North Carolina, also known as
Original Owens Pottery. The Owens family
has been involved in pottery since the early
1800s. Owens Pottery, founded in 1895 by
James H. Owens, is best known for its fire
red glazed pottery, developed in 1945 by
M.L. Owens. Owens Pottery is currently
owned and operated by his son, Boyd
Owens, who said: Our clay is local and
processed here at our shop. The clay mills
have been used since the early 1900s. All
glaze formulas are original and formulated at
our shop. By making the glaze here we are
able to control our colors and keep a family

SEAGROVE POTTERY FESTIVAL.
Late each fall, the town is home to the
Seagrove Pottery Festival, sponsored by
the Museum of Traditional North Carolina
Pottery. The Festival includes more than
120 area potters and traditional craft people
that make Seagroves colonial cottage
industry one of the largest collections in
the United States. Usually held the weekend
before Thanksgiving, the event includes
educational activities for children and adults
along with demonstrations from black-
smiths, basket makers, woodcarvers,
weavers and, of course, potters. The
Seagrove Pottery Festival was recognized
as one of the Top 20 Events in the

in a flood of accusations that began after an

had sexually harassed or assaulted several
women. Others who face sexual harassment
or assault accusations include House of
Cards star Kevin Spacey and filmmaker Brett
Ratner.

Goddard, he said, swore to his remorse.
Attorney Alan Grodin, a lawyer for Goddard,
said Goddard has been out of the country and
will have a response shortly.
Actor Jeremy Piven also took to social
media to once again declare his innocence of
sexual misconduct, saying on Twitter he
hopes the string of sexual harassment allega-
tions will lead to a constructive dialogue on
these issues but warned about false accusa-
tions.

Piven, who has been accused by two women
of sexual misconduct, faces a fresh accusation

azine that Piven held her down while he per-
formed a sex act at a hotel 14 years ago.
The crisis has also roiled the world of jour-
nalism, with editors at The New Republic and
NPR losing their jobs. The latest accusation
involved Rolling Stone: Ben Ryan, a free-
lance writer, accused the magazines publish-
er, Jann Wenner, of sexual harassment, say-
ing Wenner offered a writing contract if Ryan
spent the night at the publishers Manhattan
townhouse. Wenner acknowledges he did
attempt to have a sexual liaison but denied
offering a writing contract for sex.
In other developments, Jenny McCarthy
also reiterated an allegation she made against
Seagal, saying she fled from a 1995 audition
with Seagal after he repeatedly asked her to
take off her clothes for a part that didnt
require nudity.

I wish I had reacted to their admiration of me by being a
good example to them as a man and given them some guid-
ance as a comedian, including because I admired their
work.
The hardest regret to live with is what youve done to
hurt someone else. And I can hardly wrap my head around



the scope of hurt I brought on them. Id be remiss to
exclude the hurt that Ive brought on people who I work
with and have worked with whos (sic) professional and
personal lives have been impacted by all of this, includ-

When he was charged Nov. 8 with murder-
ing Lampe, Seymour attended the countys
first arraignment by video conference from
the state hospital due to significant medical
issues. Wagstaffe was encouraged that pros-
ecutors were able to tell members of
Lampes family they may be able to bring
closure to a case that has gone unresolved
for more than four decades.
We believe we are going to be able to
obtain justice for them by holding the killer
of their loved one accountable, he said.
DNA linked Seymour to one of the five
1976 killings of young women in San
Mateo County dubbed the Gypsy Hill mur-
ders after the road one of the victims was
found near. Seymours charge is the most
recent development in the murder cases
since investigators linked the DNA of vio-
lent convict Halbower, now 69, to the mur-
ders of Paula Baxter, 17, and Veronica Anne
Cascio, 18. Hes believed to have raped the
teens before stabbing them in the spring of
1976.
Cascio was the first victim to disappear
and her body was discovered at the Sharp
Park Golf Course in Pacifica; Baxters body

was found behind a church in Millbrae about
a month later in February. Halbower was
once a suspect for three other murders that
occurred in similar fashions in northern San
Mateo County in early 1976, including
Lampes, as well as the murder of a young
woman that same year in Reno, Nevada. The
body of Tanya Blackwell, 14, was discov-
ered months after her January disappearance
in 1976 off Gypsy Hill Road in Pacifica.
Carol Lee Booth, 26, was last seen in South
San Francisco March 15 before her body
was discovered in early May. Lampe was the
fifth Peninsula victim and was killed in
April that same year in Daly City.
In January 2015, Halbower was extradited
from an Oregon prison where he was serv-
ing time for kidnapping and attempting to
kill a woman there. He is currently awaiting
jury trial set to start Jan. 8, 2018, for the
cases involving DNA evidence since 1988,
murders of Baxter and Cascio, Wagstaffe
said.
Investigators broadened their search for
Lampes killer when they discovered
Halbower was in custody at a Nevada jail
facing rape and other related charges when
the young woman was last seen leaving
Serramonte Shopping Center in Daly City
April 1, 1976, according to prosecutors.
Lampe was returning to her car after a shift
at a Macys store where she worked and was
supposed to meet a friend but never showed
up.
Someone passing by Lampes car later
that evening found her body repeatedly
stabbed and inside her vehicle, a 1964-1/2
Mustang, which was parked in the same
location at the mall, between the Macys
store and the Dennys restaurant.
Seymours defense attorney Paul
DeMeester said the DNA evidence and how it
was collected will be a focus for him in the
case. DeMeester said the DNA match is the
only evidence hes aware of tying Seymour
to Lampes murder, and that he plans to
investigate the many factors he said can
complicate a case hinging on DNA evi-
dence.
DNA is going to be front and center on
this case, he said.
DeMeester said he has been dealing with
and knows from experience that how and
when the information is stored and pulled
from the state database can play a role in
how closely the information can be matched
to a given case. He noted hes seen other
cases where a DNA match is partial and could
be matched to other profiles in the database.
Though DeMeester said he has yet to review
the details of the analysis linking Seymour
to Lampes murder, he is planning to look at
the process used with his clients DNA very
closely.

Wagstaffe said investigators obtained
another blood sample from Seymour to con-
firm the DNA match made in the state data-
base and were able to confirm the match,
leaving no question in their minds the
blood on Lampes jacket is Seymours.
Wagstaffe said other evidence linking
Seymour to her murder had come to light
since prosecutors began investing the case,
but he wasnt able to elaborate on details.
Seymours bail was set at $10 million and
hes expected to be kept at the hospital for
the time being, according to prosecutors.
DeMeester is also not convinced labeling
the cases as the Gypsy Hill murders is use-
ful at this point. He said he could understand
why authorities may have linked them at
one time given some similarities, but took
issue with the fact that the label still
remains on the cases with no factual basis
to connect them.
For Wagstaffe, the case is an example of
why California and other states have not
established a statue of limitations for pros-
ecuting murders. This, he said, leaves room
for new developments in investigative
tools to bring justice to victims of cold
cases like Lampes and the other young
women who died more than 40 years ago.
Its a very rewarding feeling to be able to
bring justice for the victims family, he
said.

demand for a cut in the corporate tax
rate to 20 percent from the current
35 percent is a big complication,
as is unrest among House Republicans
hailing from affluent suburban dis-
tricts who are upset over the proposed
loss of the deduction for state income
taxes.
Heres a rundown on the major differ-
ences between the House and Senate
bills:
INDIVIDUAL TAX RATES
The Senate measure keeps the cur-
rent number of personal income tax
brackets, seven, though it changes
the rates to 10, 12, 22.5, 25, 32.5, 35
and 38.5 percent. That last top brack-
et for the wealthiest earners carries a
higher rate of 39.6 percent under cur-
rent law.
The House bill goes further toward
simplifying the tax system. It shrinks
the number of brackets from seven to
four, with rates of 12, 25, 35 and 39.6
percent.
Lots of numbers here for congres-
sional negotiators to play with, to
move up or down.
The inheritance tax on multimillion
dollar estates, called the estate tax, is
an especially hot-button issue.
Democrats point to the proposed GOP
changes as proof that the Republicans
are out to help wealthy people like
Trump and his family.
Currently, when someone dies, the
person inheriting the estate must pay
taxes on its value above $5.5 million

those limits and then repeals the
whole tax after 2023. The Senate ver-
sion doubles those exemption
amounts but doesnt repeal the tax.
To repeal or not to repeal? That may
be the class-warfare question.
DEDUCTIONS
The Senate bill would eliminate a
taxpayers ability to deduct state
income taxes and local property
taxes. But the final bill may have to
closely track a House compromise
that provides a property tax deduction
of up to $10,000 or else risk a revolt
from GOP lawmakers from New York,
New Jersey, and California.
The Senate bill preserves popular
individual tax breaks for large medical
expenses, mortgage interest, electric
vehicles and college costs that were
targeted by the House. The House lim-
its deductibility of mortgage interest
to the first $500,000 of a loan, riling

and eliminates a deduction for medical
expenses thats often taken by fami-
lies facing crippling nursing home
costs.
BUSINESS:
Both the House and Senate versions
slash the tax rate for corporations to
20 percent from the current 35 per-
cent. But theres a big twist: The
Senate bill delays the rate cut for a
year.
The delay was put in to reduce the
bills cost by $100 billion or so
the sacrifices Sundell and his mother
made so others could live freely, Reed
said he became motivated to find a suit-
able way of recognizing them in the
city. Years after he came up with the
idea, Reed was pleased to see so many
gathered to finally see the memorial
designed by a committee of residents
and officials.
Belmont resident Randall Ramian, a
retired U.S. Navy captain, thanked city
officials and residents for recognizing
veterans and their families with the
new memorial. Ramian, who retired in
August after 29 years of military serv-
ice, said he followed in the footsteps
of his father and grandfather who
served in the Korean War and World
War I, respectively. Ramian called the
memorial a fitting tribute to those who
have made sacrifices some with
their lives to protect the freedom of
U.S. citizens as well as the freedom of
other countries around the world.
It is important to preserve their
memory with todays and tomorrows
generation, he said.

hates it too. U.S. stock markets sold
off Thursday in response to news of
the proposed deferral, with industrial
and technology stocks leading the
decline, before recouping some of the
losses by the close of trading.
Might the implementation delay be
traded for a smaller corporate tax cut,
something above 20 percent?
Trump actually had been demanding
15 percent and reportedly was initial-
ly furious at the 20 percent figure. The
issue is setting the corporate rate at a
level that experts and tax writers
believe would bring the U.S. closer to
its overseas competitors.
The electric car industry notably
makers Tesla and Chevrolet and
producers of wind power for generat-
ing electricity are losers under the
House bill. The tax credit of up to
$7,500 for plug-in electric vehicles
would be repealed, and the credit for
wind energy would be reduced. But the
Senate version retains the incentives.
The loss of tax credits for renewable
energy would free billions to help pay
for the corporate tax cuts in the legis-
lation. But in addition to environmen-
talists objections, the prospect also
angers some Republican senators,
including powerful Chuck Grassley of
Iowa, who has vowed to defend the
credit.
Theres a special rate for businesses
whose profits are counted in the own-
ers personal tax returns. Millions of
U. S. businesses use this pass-
through format. The House bill taxes
many of them at a maximum 25 per-
cent, down from 39.6 percent current-
ly, and adds a lower minimum rate. The
Senate version would set a new 17.4
percent deduction for pass-through
income, aimed to help smaller busi-
nesses.

ny to unveil the memorial when she
decided to take her 3-year-old son

she was grateful for the opportunity to

her family that her grandfather served
in World War II as a member of the U.S.

eager to see one unveiled where he
lives.
