PRACTICAL REPORT

03
To determine the relative as well as absolute gravity of
some stations. Find the location of the station as well
as plot the profile using GPS receivers.

DATE OF SUBMISSION : NOV 08,2017

Aim To take gravity measurements at a location of known absolute gravity value and then use
the difference in relative gravity values to determine the absolute gravity readings at different
locations.
Theory There are two types of gravimeter units available.
1. Absolute gravimeter
2. Relative gravimeter
The absolute gravimeter gives precise value of absolute gravity at any point on surface of earth.
However it is significantly more expansive than relative gravimeter which gives us the relative
difference in the gravity values at different points. However relative gravimeter can also be used
to measure absolute gravity provided we know the absolute value of gravity at a fixed point.
As the relative gravimeter would give us a relative value at the point of known absolute
gravity we can use it as measure to determine the gravity reading at different stations by finding
the relative gravity difference between the point of known and unknown gravity.

Instruments used Burris Gravimeter, Computer system/PDA, GPS receiver.

Methodology
The methodology is based on taking relative gravity measurements at a point of known
absolute gravity reading and afterwards using it as a reference. The procedure is as follows.
1. Taking measurement at a point of known absolute gravity. We will get a reading in
gravimeter in mgals.
Figure Error! No sequence specified.Referance point of known absolute gravity at PWD
guest house Roorkee

2. Then move the gravimeter to points of unknown absolute gravity. Taking

measurements here will give us another reading in gravimeter.

Figure Error! No sequence specified.- Location where absolute gravity is to be determined.

The difference in the above two readings of gravimeter is measured which gives us the
difference in the gravity of point of unknown gravity value from the point of known absolute
gravity.
3. By adding or subtracting this difference gravity reading in mgal to the known
absolute gravity value of reference station we can calculate the absolute gravity at
the given point.

The point of known absolute gravity used as a reference station PWD guest house Roorkee
Height - 216.20m, Latitude - 29.872165N, Longitude - 77.89902167E
The value of absolute value at this point 979.11562 Gal

The points where absolute gravity is to be measured

1. Near senate hall James Thomson building
Height - 222.85m Latitude - 29.8650831N, Longitude - 77.89587972E

Results -
The absolute gravity value at known location = 979.11562 gal or 979115.62 mgal
The gravimeter reading at this point = 2653.788 mgal
The gravimeter reading at the point of unknown absolute gravity = 2652.628 mgal
Difference between the two values of relative gravity = 2653.788 2652.628
= 1.16 mgal
The absolute gravity of the point of unknown gravity = 979115.62 1.16
= 979114.46 mgal or 979.11446 gal
Discussion Following the above procedure we can calculate the absolute gravity at any point
provided we a reference point of known absolute gravity. The absolute gravity can be measured
up to an accuracy of 1mgal.
