Every man who attends the Aug. 26 event will receive two free tickets to a Rays’ game during the Aug. 30-Sept. 1
homestand. This will be the third year the event is held at Tropicana Field; last year more than 600 men took
advantage of the free education and screenings.
This year’s event will focus on educating men about prostate cancer and helping them to make an informed decision
about whether to be screened for the disease. Men can sign up for a 20-minute educational session and then decide
if they would like to proceed with a screening while there. Education will be held in groups throughout the day.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, with
African American men at an even higher risk of one in four.
Rays owner Stuart Sternberg understands that many Rays fans fit the demographic of those most at risk for the
disease. “We hope to build on last year’s success and reach out to our fan base to encourage them to learn more
about prostate cancer,” he said. Sternberg also serves as a member of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Board of Advisors.
Dr. Julio Pow-Sang, a urologic oncologist specializing in prostate cancer, will lead the Moffitt Cancer Center team.
“Prostate cancer is a very complex disease, and the more men are informed, the better they deal with the issues
surrounding the disease and in making informed decisions about screening,” he said. Dr. Pow-Sang has studied the
disease for more than 20 years.
WHAT: Free prostate cancer education for men, followed by free screening if desired. Both the PSA and DRE test
will be offered. The education takes about 20 minutes, followed by Q&A and the screening.
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, from 7:30 a.m. -- 5:30 p.m.
