Proud History...Promising Future

Established in 1881, Colorado City has a history
that could have been at the heart of any western
book or movie. It had bar room brawls, gun fights
and a horse drawn street car that shuttled people
from the booming business district to the zoo and
race track. It had cattle drives through town, buf-
falo and buffalo hunters and troubling issues with
the Native Americans. With the expansion of the
railroad and cattle ranches, Colorado City’s central
location and progressive development earned this
wild west town the title of “Mother City of West
Texas”.
Colorado City still upholds much of its early
character in the historic downtown and through in-
teresting citizens and life ways. Natural resources,

W
elcome to Colorado City, the “Mother City of West Texas” and the home
of a region rich in natural wonders, history and recreational possibilities.
Colorado City is the virtual gateway to adventure. It is truly an op-
portunity for visitors to experience Texas at its best.
No matter how you get to Mitchell County, your first glimpse of the historic com-
munity will let you know you have arrived at a place unlike anywhere else in the world.
Both roadsides and pasture land are colored with wildflowers galore,
from purple sage, wild primrose and red gaillardias to the rare poppy mallow.
Mitchell County is also a haven for wildlife. Coyotes, deer, horned toads,
as well as elusive badgers, foxes and the occasional cougar all call it home.
Bird watchers can stay busy with the antics of hummingbirds, meadowlark, dove, paint-
ed bunting, orioles, tufted titmouse, cardinal, Suss King pine sparrows, red wing black-
birds, mockingbirds, scissor tails and once in a while a kingfisher, and are greeted with
the lonely call of sand hill cranes every fall.
West Texas is also known for its spec-
tacular sunsets and night skies with stars so
big and close you can almost reach out and
touch them.
Blessed with two lakes, Mitchell County has something for everyone in
the family. Stocked with plenty of Florida bass, blue gill, perch and chan-
nel cat fish, Lake Champion is a fisherman’s dream. Lake Colorado City is a
skier’s paradise.
Sheltered swimming coves, water skiing, paddle boats and more keep even
the most avid water sports fan happy
Scenery, wildlife and water aren’t the only thing you’ll find that is ap-
pealing in Mitchell County. There are festivals a plenty, whether you’re a car
enthusiast, cowboy, pilot, or just love an excuse to get together with family and
friends and have a good time. Mitchell County is sure to give you memories
that will last a lifetime.

Guitars, jazz and more at Opera House

The lights go down, the music comes up and the historic
old Opera House is once again in business.
The original building was constructed in 1899-1900 and
featured staged light opera, vaudeville acts and after 1911,
silent movies.
Although it was sold and converted to a boarding house
in 1925 as the Great Depression of the 20’s and 30’s took its
toll on the country, Colorado City’s residents restored it to
its original purpose during the mid-20th century.
The West Texas Chamber of Commerce presented the
1985-86 Cultural Achievement Award for Outstanding
Contribution to the Colorado City Playhouse, along with
the Casa Manana Theater in Fort Worth.
Community leaders, business men, teachers and students

joined forces in 2008 to restore the Opera House as close to its historical
appearance as possible.
With refurbished walls, a drop ceiling and better insulation, along with
decorations that stay true to the historical period, the Opera House is once
again a place for performances ranging from drama to music, including
concerts by Jay Boy Adams and Bill Worrell, the Tarleton State University
Jazz band and the West Texas Steel Guitar Association.

Customer Service Is Our Business – Safety is Our Concern

Taking care of customers is top priority at Cap Rock Energy. Keeping the
customer safe while providing reliable service at a fair price is equally important.

Overhead power lines are a safe, affordable means of delivering electricity,

but they can be dangerous. If you are working with ladders, a hydraulic lift
or any tall piece of equipment near power lines, look up and constantly be aware
of your proximity to power lines and poles. The briefest touch can be fatal.

When flying kites or model airplanes, stay away from power lines. If your toy becomes caught in power lines,
DON’T try to retrieve it - call 911 or CRE.

All downed power lines are dangerous! Even if they’re not sparking or buzzing,
they could still be energized and dangerous.
