Fifty Years of the Split Skillion Roof in Queensland

[ ] Elizabeth Musgrave ABSTRACT

[ ] Lu Andong This paper traces the origins and development of split

[ ] Lei Dongxue skillion roof. Through an analysis of the work of Dalton

and others, it demonstrates this roof form as one instance
of modern architecture in response both to the climate
in sub-tropical Queensland, and to a global shift in
disciplinary discourse, including a renewed interest in

the pre-existing tradition, regionalist thinking and an

emerging environmental consciousness.

Buildability: As the Necessary Tension between
Environmental Management & Building Mode
A Case Study on the Architectural Value of Hoffmann Kiln in China

[ ] Li Haiqing ABSTRACT
[ ] Yu Changjiang 218 Based on a survey of 218 clay brick and tile factories using
[ ] Qian Kun Hoffmann kilns throughout China, it examines environmental

[ ] Zhang Jiaxin management as required by crafts and craftsmen. Through an
analysis of the means of realization, it reassures environmental
management as the target, building mode as the method, and
( 210096) buildability as the necessary tension between the above two

with continuous intervention and correction of the interactive,

which finally leads to the cumulative, systematic environmental

From Medical Body to a Structure-Related Concept of
Environment

[ ] Dou Pingping ABSTRACT

This paper raises the argument that the modern notion

of environment centres on the complex and changing

3
( 210093) medical body. Through three cases of architecture
for nurturing special beings in the early modernist
era : Gut Garkau, Gorilla House in London Zoo and
2017/06/11 Paimio Sanatorium, it analyzes the effect of structure in

encouraging the unification of environment and body
(51408300, 51178465)
(BK20140609) towards characteristic integrative forms. Then the paper
appeals a reconsideration of the role of the environmental
agenda in architecture, and asserts that the modernist
environmental notion based on the medical body

provides an informative starting point.

A Critical Review of the Scholarship on
Henry K. Murphy: Case Studies of the College of
Yale-in-China and the School of Oberlin-in-Shansi

[ ] Liu Yishi ABSTRACT

Several crucial things have been largely missed in previous

research on Henry Murphy, e.g. the study on substantial
3
( 100084) processes of design and construction of particular building(s),
that on personnel and institutions, and that on the origins and
evolution of design philosophies. Based on the case studies
2016/12/08 of the College of Yale-in-China and the School of Oberlin-

in-Shansi, the paper ventures at clarifications of previously
(2014z21034)
neglected issues to examine the origins and development of
Murphys adaptive architecture, the design processes of the two
schools and their place in Murphys professional career in China,
contributing to a better understanding of Murphys practices.

The paper hence contends for exhaustive acquisition and

thorough understanding of first-hand materials with a holistic
vision for comparative study, to enrich the study of architects in
modern China.

An Analysis of the Characteristics and
Influential Factors of Catholic Churches in
Central Shandong Area

[ ] Tian Lin ABSTRACT

[ ] Xing Chenyan This paper delineates the construction processes of
Catholic churches in Central Shandong area. Based on

historical records and extensive fieldwork, it makes
( 100044) categorization and statistics of churches with various
styles in this area. It examines several cases to study
when the missionaries started building churches in

2016/07/27 Central Shandong, how local techniques cast influence on

construction, and how Western elements were absorbed
into traditional Chinese culture. It concludes with factors
of significant influence on stylistic characteristics of the
churches in this area.

Material Tectonics of Regional Architecture with
Economic Constraints
A Study on the Church Mater Misericordiae in Baranzate

[ ] Hu Bin1 ABSTRACT
[ ] Li Xukun2 Taking the Church Mater Misericordiae in Baranzate
as an example, this paper introduces the principle of
( )
selecting concrete and glass as building materials and
1 ( 200092) the construction process with economic constraints.
2 ( 610072) Based on the analyses of prac tical construc tion
strategies, transformation of spatial prototypes, and

design strategies of spatial sequence, it also reveals the
2017/04/23
relationship of economy, material tectonics, regional
identity and atmosphere.

Designing the R & F Star Reading Experience Cabin at
Tianjin University

[ ] Liu Hanbing ABSTRACT

[ ] Wang Zhigang ( )
This paper introduces the design concept, building
[ ] Ma Siran process and teaching significance of the R & F Star

Reading Experience Cabin from the tectonic view of "box"
and "courtyard". Based on modular characteristics of
( 300072) the container and spatial connotation of the traditional
courtyard, it explores the transformation between

modular space and courtyard space, and creates a new
2017/03/07
kind of courtyard of compactness, consecutiveness and
openness.

Design of Tiny Renovation in an Open House

[ ] Liu Yang ABSTRACT

[ ] Fan Yue Confronting the costs caused by additional technologies
and difficulties of renovation of open houses, this

paper develops a new design concept, i.e. house of tiny
( 116023) renovation on the basis of small change, less demolition
and a short period of construction. Taking layout and
joint design into account, it realizes spatial reduction and

2016/09/14 increase by restricting the area of renovation, adopting

space of variable height, and using easily transformable
(51638003)
kitchens and bathrooms in design.

Insulation and Tectonic Representation
9 A Case Study of Nine Swiss Buildings

[ ] Yu Yang ABSTRACT
Arising from an analysis of nine Swiss buildings, this paper

depicts the trend of development of insulating layers in

the past thirty years, changing from a sub-ordinary part
to a central element. It also reveals the impact of the
insulating layer on tectonic representations as a result of
2017/01/08 the trend.
