Climate Change

Nights are cooler and were regularly getting the evening showers. This means the hot summer is
almost over and with it, floods, landslides and just about other calamity that we have become very familiar
with.
According to the United Nations University (UNU), Philippines ranks third among the countries most
vulnerable to climate change and disasters caused by natural hazards.
How vulnerable are our people? Think. Almost two months after typhoon Lawin, those hit are still
struggling back, but barely making it, more so because those hit were farmers and fishermen, the sectors
who are also among the most at risk from climate change.
UNU estimates that for every 10% rise in food prices, millions of Asian will be pushed to poverty.
This should be food for our thought for our new vocal legislators and executives. We know too well
that national government is so slow in responding to the immediate needs of disaster victims, outside
noodles and rice.
Now, if we dont mind feeding our people noodles and rice for weeks on end, then we can rely on
national government for that. But how about going back to the groove of surviving on ones own?
Yes, we have laws upon laws, almost a hundred years worth. But climate change is an entirely new
concern. How do we protect our people outside buying rubber boat and stocking on relief goods.
When typhoon Lawin hit the agricultural lands, some parts of our country, what further stumped the
already slow-moving bureaucracy was the fact that on one of those farm lands and crops were increased.
No one ever thought a typhoon would hit our parts. There was no ready cash to boil them out. Maybe
there can be affordable weather insurance for the poor farmers.
The weather nowadays always hold surprises, it may change today, tomorrow, or the other day.
Extrajudicial Killing: Inimical not Beneficial

Thou shall not kill the Fifth Commandment states. This is relevant to what is happening on a large scale
these past months. Let us not turn a blind eye to the rising numbers of deaths nowadays. This crime Im talking about
goes by the name of extrajudicial killing. It is the killing of a person by governmental authorities without the sanction
of any judicial proceeding or legal process. Extra judicial punishments are mostly seen by humanity to be unethical,
since they bypass the due process of the legal jurisdiction in which they occur.
Since Pres. Duterte declared war on drugs, extrajudicial killings have been happening around. The war against
illegal drugs have gone overboard. Police just kill drug suspects who resisted arrest, as they claim. This is refuted by
relatives who are saying they were not armed. Many were merely asleep when they were killed.
I have supported President Dutertes stand against criminals. I understand where he is coming from. He just
wanted to make sure we, the Filipinos feel safe in the Philippines again. After all, for too long, those who break the
law would go by unpunished and as a result more and more criminals are emboldened to do as they please because
they dont fear the repercussions. There are many aspects of the presidents solution to violence and crime that I can
understand and even support.
However, having said all that, I dont believe that this unlawful and felonious killing is the best way to achieve
the goal of a safer country. What happens when one day its someone we love being wrongly accused and gunned out
without a proper trial? Or worse, what if we, or someone we love, become collateral damage in a random shoot-out?
Whoever is behind this so called extrajudicial killings, they should stop it right now. They should respect the
rights of the individuals, specifically the drug suspects. They should not take ones life. Who do they think they are?
Who are they to give punishments to their fellowmen? Who are they to judge? How can they tolerate and support a
society being ruled over by immorality and fear? They should stop these killings and follow the due process and fair
hearing to make things right and just.
Over 3 thousand have been killed so far, without the benefit of court trial. Even suspects and criminals deserve
their day in court. Thats basic human rights. Extrajudicial killings must stop, the police should desist from killing
anyone just merely on the notion theyre drugs users or dealers. We must all raise our voices against extrajudicial
killing. We, the Filipinos must also do our part, be good members of the society, be vigilant on every actions being
done by self and by the government. Theres no problem big as this if drugs, vices and other acts illegal is out of our
minds to begin with.
We all want to live in a safe society. We want to be able to raise our children in a safer world. We are all aligned
in wanting a better country. However, there has to be a way to do this while letting due process and the rule of law
prevail. I remember the Latin legal phrase Fiat iustitia ruat clum, which translates into Let justice be done
though the heavens fall. Fair justice should always prevail, especially when lives are at stake.

Teaching: The Noblest Profession

There is no better investment you can make than a teaching career in education, which has been
referred to as the noblest profession. Teaching means learning and sharing your knowledge with
todays youth intending to make a big difference in every childs life. The teaching profession requires
people who have the will to educate young minds and mold them into something great.
Taking up the teaching profession means possessing an outgoing personality, being a good
listener, having great problem-solving and strong communication skills to effectively communicate
messages to the students. Since time immemorial, the profession of teaching has been considered as
one of the noblest. Teachers have always played the role of agents for various social changes in the
society. They had always been considered as boons to the society for they are the ones responsible for
cultivating learners intellect and aptitude.
Teachers serve as role models to every individual not only to those who dream but also to those
who are lost. They impart and disseminate knowledge, teach good manners and right conduct and
comfort as a mother, a friend or even as a family.
Teaching is not about money or wealth but instead exerting your effort, investing your personal
time, energy, resources and knowledge as well. Sometimes, it means disappointment, heartaches and
pains. But touching the hearts of the people and opening the minds of children can give you real joy
and contentment which money cant buy. There can be no life achievement greater than to have
affected the lives of many children in a profound and irreversible way.

Radioactivity and its Uses

Radioactivity is the emission of ionizing radiation or particles caused by the spontaneous

disintegration of atomic nuclei. It was discovered by Antoine Henri Becquerel and emulated by Marie Curie
and Pierre. There are many practical applications to the use of radioactivity/radiation. Radioactive
resources are used to study living organisms, to diagnose and treat diseases, to sterilize medical
instruments and food, to produce energy for heat and electric power, and to monitor various steps in all
types of industrial processes. Radioactive materials have a variety of important uses in medicine, industry,
agriculture and sterilization, as well as, in our homes.
Medicine. Radio pharmaceuticals drugs that contain radioactive material are important in the
diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. They can be injected into the body, inhaled or taken orally as
medicines or to enable imaging of internal organs and bodily processes.
Industry. Radioactive materials are used in industrial radiography, civil engineering, materials analysis,
measuring devices, process control in factories, oil and mineral exploration and checking oil and gas
pipelines for leaks and weaknesses.
Agriculture. Radioactive materials are used to improve foods crops, preserve food and control insect
pests. They are also used to measure soil moisture content, erosion rates, salinity and the efficiency of
fertilizer uptake in the soil.
Sterilization. Syringes, dressings, surgical gloves and instruments and heart valves can be sterilized
after packaging by using radiation. Radiation sterilization can be used where more traditional methods,
such as heat treatment, cannot be used, such as in the sterilization of powders and ointments and in
biological preparations like tissue grafts.
Environment. Radioactive materials are used as tracers to measure environmental processes, including
the monitoring of silt, water, and pollutants. They are used to measure and map effluent and pollution
discharges from factories and sewerage plants and the movement of sand around harbors, rivers and bays.
Radioactive materials used for such purposes have short half-lives and decay to background levels within
days.
Homes. Most first aid kits found in our homes contain items sterilized by radiation, including cotton,
wool, bandages and burn dressings. One of the most common uses of radioactive materials in the home is
in smoke detectors. Most of theses life-saving devices contain tiny amounts of radioactive material which
make the detectors sensitive to smoke. The radiation dose to the occupants of the house is very much less
than that from background radiation.

Dr. Remelyn Bautista lectures on Gender Equality

Dr. Remelyn Baustista, the new Gender and Development instructor, discussed various gender
problems which the societys been facing up to now.
She showed two short videos reflecting the different roles of men and women.
The first video talks about a story between two siblings named Meena and Raju. The story begins with
these two kids doing the household chores on their own. And at the end, Raju complained on receiving
only a little amount of food for dinner, when in fact, he did everything at home.
The second video revolves around a family where gender inequality applies. It was clearly shown in
the video that the wife did all the stuffs at home and at work while the husband had done nothing good.
Dr. Bautista asked few questions on the students regarding the two stories and some were able to give
their insights.
She did an introduction on gender and how it differs from sex. Then, the discussion on gender equality
followed.
According to her, to attain gender equality, every individual must stop D.E.M.O.S. Discrimination,
Exploitation, Marginalization, Oppression and Subordination.
This lecture Dr. Bautista had conducted was surely an eye-opener for a lot of students present in that
day.

Pastor Joel Nelson visits CSU-SM

Joel Nelson, a pastor from USA, came back again at CSU-SM on the 10 th of February for another Godly
lesson. He was a pastor missionary who travels around the world to spread the word of God. He preached
lessons on how to discover Gods purpose in our life.
Pastor Nelson shared a wonderful story about his family and two adopted daughters from Haiti.
He provoked laughter from the crowd as he joked saying pangit kayo in the most humorous way.
He discussed the eight ways to discover Gods purpose in our life. He was able to touch the hearts of
many students as the lesson had gone deeper.
The students were all smiles after the mass and had surely learned a lot of life lessons from Pastor
Nelson.
CSU-SM celebrates Pre-Valentines Day

CSU-SM celebrated an On the Spot Pre-Valentines Day Program at the gymnasium last February 10.
Early in the morning, CSG officers were busy preparing for the program. They carried and arranged
chairs and designed the gymnasium stage.
Students from different colleges were all invited to join the Pre-Valentines Day Celebration.
Gov. Ronnie Aguinaldo gave his opening remarks. Then, the emcees introduced a comedian named
Bretman Rock who came from Hawaii a.k.a Chocolate. His name and the place were just made up. It was
only for fun.
The comedian was very funny. He had the crowds laughing very hard. Chocolate asked one male
volunteer from each colleges to go up on stage. If you would kiss me, what part of my body would it be
and why?, he asked. Each male volunteers amusingly answered his question causing the crowd die from
laughter.
Chocolate left the crowd with big smiles on their faces. CSG councilor Zeatrix Basco introduced the
speaker of the program, Dr. Remelyn Bautista. She lectured about gender equality.
After the lecture, female students were asked to stay on the right side and male students on the left
side of the gym. Half of the paper hearts were attached under some chairs and those who have them were
asked to find their pairs. Five pairs of students won the game and each received a prize.
In the afternoon, the Search for Mr. And Ms. Cupido was held and College of Agiculture won the
Competition.
The program has ended with so much happiness.

CHED Scholars receive Educational Assistance

CHED grantees received their educational assistance at the Conference Hall.

Many students expect their financial assistance amounting to 6000 pesos.
To be able to receive this, the students are required to pass two photocopies of their back-to-back IDs
and pay 120 pesos to OSSW office for the payment of their scholar requirements.
The staffs started giving the students educational assistance on February 22 at the Conference Hall.
The staffs didnt yet finish giving the educational assistance of the grantees so decided to continue it
on the next day.
The grantees who already received their financial assistance was so pleased and happy.
CTE awaits for the new Cum Laudes

Who are these students going to graduate as Cum Laudes in the College of Teacher Education this
year? This will be known on June.
All CTE 4th year students began their Practice Teaching last January 9. Each of the students were
deployed in different grade schools.
I have encountered a 4th year student who is currently having her Practice Teaching. Is it difficult to be
in the field of Practive Teaching?, I asked. In the first place, yes, it is difficult because it was my first time
to be on that school. I felt nervous but as time goes by, everything became fine. As long as you have
determination and passion on what youre doing, youll succeed, she said.
As I have heard her answer, all of my fears and bad thoughts suddenly disappear.
Today, they are already having their final demonstration.
All the students were brilliant on their own way.
No doubt there will be more Cum Laudes of Teacher Education this year. Everyone of us is excited to
know who are those who can make it on the top.

Nowadays climate change is the biggest problem of the human being. It is already happening and represents
one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet.

The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in
global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea
level. The Earths average surface temperature has risen by 0.76 C since 1850. Most of the warming that
has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities. In its Fourth
Assessment Report projects that, without further action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the global
average surface temperature is likely to rise by a further 1.8-4.0C this century, and by up to 6.4C in the
worst case scenario. Even the lower end of this range would take the temperature increase since pre-
industrial times above 2C the threshold beyond which irreversible and possibly catastrophic changes
become far more likely.
The climate can affect every person and our health directly through increases in temperature. Such increases
may lead to more extreme heat waves during the summer while producing less extreme cold spells during
the winter. Particular segments of the population such as those with heart problems, asthma, the elderly, and
the very young can be especially vulnerable to extreme heat. There can be extreme floods and droughts,
hurricanes.

Nowadays there are so many factories that exhale really destructive substances and pollute the air. We all
know very well that air is something we cant live without. When we breathe the polluted air, we can get
seriously ill. Ground-level ozone can damage lung tissue, and is especially harmful for those with asthma
and other chronic lung diseases. Sunlight and high temperatures, combined with other pollutants such as
nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, can cause the ground-level ozone to increase. We cannot
escape from the polluted air-its everywhere, even in our homes and we are breathing it non-stop. This can
cause cancer and other serious diseases.

Another huge problem is that the sea levels are rising worldwide. Also the expansion of ocean water is
caused by warmer ocean temperatures.. Mountain glaciers and small ice caps are melting as well as
Greenlands Ice Sheet and the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The temperature is rising which means that ice is melting
faster and faster.
However, these are not the only problems. Another issue are the greenhouse gasses. They are gasses which
trap heat in the atmosphere. Some greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide occur naturally by natural
processes and other are created and emitted solely through human activities. For example carbon dioxide is
entering the atmosphere because of human activities like burning of fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal).
All vehicles exhale too much damaging substances. People have been trying to reduce them but the problem
is still topical and I think we have to do something like ride a bike not a car to work or school, we should
take the shortest route possible, and plan our drive so that we will not backtrack or travel out of our way.We
also may choose a clean-burning fuel, which reduces ozone-forming pollutants and buy a car that produces
fewer emissions or runs using an alternative fuel. The taxes of cars should be higher and most of the people
will prefer to use the public transport and we will no longer have traffic jams and we will reduce the
damaging emissions.

As a conclusion, I think that when it can not do both, The UN should prioritize combating climate change
over reducing poverty. Of course, poverty is a big issue, which needs a solution but have you ever asked
yourself why the poor countries like Bangladesh, Gambia, Zambia are poor and why so many people die?
Its because the climate doesnt allow them to grow food and they cant afford to buy it from other
countries. The climate is a very important thing and if we dont stop the changes soon, more and more
plants and trees are going to die, we wont have enough food and then not only will the third world
countries suffer from hunger but so will the whole world. I think it is better to first stop the changes in
climate and then gradually reduce the hunger in the poor countries. Because if we stop the changes, we are
going to be healthier and everything around us will be cleaner and it will be how it actually should be. I
believe harmony between nature and human beings will return.
