1.0 INTRODUCTION
According to economist Joseph Alois Schumpeter (1883-1950), entrepreneurs are not
necessarily motivated by profit but regard it as a standard for measuring achievement or
success.
Entrepreneur profiling is a profile that describe the details of the firm, why the
entrepreneurs decide to start the business and how the entrepreneurs decide to start the
business. In this profiling, the background, the characteristics of the entrepreneurs and how
the entrepreneurs spot the opportunity and how it surfaces. The content of profiling
includes how much capital that the entrepreneurs required to start the firm and how they
organize and manage their firm too. The approach of funds and how they overcome the
crisis and pressure during the early survival period will also be described in the profiling.
We have find two entrepreneurs that would like to share their experience. We have
prepared an entrepreneur profiling based on the details that had been told when the
entrepreneurs were interview. The entrepreneurs that we find were Chee Chui Siah and
hers business partner, Soh Chi. She is in her 38s this year and her partner is 29 years old.
MEWAH SUPPLY ENTERPRISE is the name they given to their business. Mewah Supply
Enterprise has been around for 9 years since it first started in 1999.
Miss Chee Chui Siah and Miss Soh Chi starts their business when they were 29 years old
and 18 years old, respectively. Their business is mainly on providing printing and
photocopy services. Besides that, they too provide other services such as making business
card, sticker, poster, laminating, binding, trophies and banner. Before they starts this
business, her business partner and she works as a cashier at a mini supermarket. They
started doing this printing and photocopy business after done doing some research on
university students needs for the printing and photocopy services to help with their
assignments.
After they decide to do this business, they started doing research on finding strategic places
to have her business. After they done doing some research, they found out that they can try
to set up her business around the area of Taman Tasik Utama and Taman Bukit Beruang
Indah, where a lot of university students lives. They owns a total of 3 shops, which two of
them are located at Taman Tasik Utama and another shop is located at Taman Bukit
Beruang Indah.
Now, Mewah Supply Enterprise have a total of 20 employees from all of the 3 shops
combined. They hopes that Mewah Supply Enterprise can keeps expanding to become a
bigger business in the future. They are planning on how they can expand their business to
most of the area around Malacca.
In expanding their business, they faces many difficulties. They tries their best and never
give up in pursuing her photocopy and printing business. They does not make any loans to
prevent any financial problems in the future such as paying a lot of debts comes from the
loan and its increasing interest over time. They increases the facilities in her shop using the
profits they earns from the business only. If there are any facilities that they needs to add
but lacking in money, they would wait until they have enough money to buy the facilities
that are needed in their shop.

2.0 ANSWER FOR THE QUESTIONS/ CONTENT
1. Would you tell us about yourself before you stated your first venture? Subsequent
businesses that follow after it?
I am Chee Chui Siah and my business partner is Soh Chi. We live in Malacca. We
have run this printing and photocopy business for about 9 years. Before I run this business,
my business partner and I first met each other when we were working at a mini supermarket
in Malacca
Firstly, before deciding on what or where the business will take place, we make a
research on what type of services needed for university students and the whereabouts of
their residential college. So, we decided to start a business based on printing and photocopy
services to help with their assignment and set up the shop near Taman Tasik Utama and
Taman Bukit Beruang Indah, where UTeM residential college, Kolej Kediaman Seri Utama
and Kolej Kediaman Emerald Park respectively, is nearby. Not to mention, there is UUM
nearby Taman Bukit Beruang too. The address for this shop you visited is No 24-1, Jalan
TU 42, Taman Tasik utama, 75450 Ayer Keroh, Melaka. This is the third and latest shop
that we just open recently this year.

2. How did you manage to spot and seize the opportunity? How did it surface?
Taman Tasik Utama and Taman Bukit Beruang Indah is a good and strategic place
for my business to operate because there are lot of college and university students stay
around there. Then, we decide to open Mewah Supply Enterprise, in which we are sure that
will not just make positive cash flow into the business but too will help the students in their
works.
To fulfill customer needs other than the students such as the people who resides
nearby or in the park, we also make business card, sticker, poster, laminating, binding,
souvenirs and banner services besides printing and photocopy services.

3. What were your goals in this business?

Our main goal is to expand Mewah Supply Enterprise as many as possible to every
place inside Malacca. For now, we have successfully open 3 branch of shops, which 2 of
them are located at Taman Tasik Utama and the remaining one shop is located at Taman
Bukit Beruang Indah. Not to forget, our objectives in helping the students to complete with
their assignments while getting us good revenues and profits. Its a win-win situations.
But the amounts of shop and places to set it up are restricted by the amount of funds
we have and the strategic place where a lot of students, especially from college and
university who lives nearby. If we set it up randomly as we like without taking this two
factors in mind, a lot of problems will surfaced and its not going to be pleasant.

3
4. How much capital (seed money) did it take to start-up your business? How long did
it take to reach positive cash flow and break- even sales volume?
The seed money that we took to start-up this business is around RM60 000. Most
of the money expense were used on paying the salary for the 20 employees working and
the cost of renting the photocopy and printing machines for the three shops that we are
running now. So, we took about 2 to 3 month to reach positive cash flow, but if lucky, it
usually took only about 1 month.
Our business is not just limited to printing and photocopy business, so the others
services also need money to operate. Only after our company had a positive cash flow then
we can use some of the money to expand this business such as adding extra services or
employ another worker. If not, we have to postpone our wishes to add extra services
provided or worker inside the shop.

5. In the event you lacked sufficient funds what avenues were available for you to
bootstrap the venture?
From the day my business partner and I started this business till today, we never
have any problems regarding money like short of funds in sustaining the business. Even
now, it is like a taboo for us to make loans with the banks. We thought and told ourselves
that if we borrow a loan from the bank, it will not help our business at all. This is because
the revenues and profits we received will be used to pay back the loan we make from the
bank. In my honest opinion, if you want to maintain a good business and avoiding problems
with money like lacked sufficient funds, you have to manage your financial very well and
smartly.

6. Do you have a role model? Who inspire you? The specific influence or impact he/she
had on you.
Our nearest role model is our family member. Maybe because both of us come from
what they usually called, a business family? That become one of the reason we started
doing our own business. But honestly speaking, we are just amazed at our brother, sister,
mother and father when they earn profits from the very business they started are going well.
Not only limited to that, we always talk about business range from the risk of the business
to discussing about the many types of business whether with ourselves or with our family.
In short, the one who inspire us is none other than our own family. They encourage
us to open our own business. Then, when we think that it is a good idea to open a printing
and photocopy business, they always give us support and some counseling through the
sharing of their business knowledge and experience.

4
7. What does it really take to turn a bright business idea into a successful business
venture? How do you realize the idea into the real business that involve you now?
We dont make any types of loans from any banks. This is to avoid the financial
issue that comes with the debts. So, we just use the money that we have to sustain the
business. If we cannot afford some facilities that we lacked, then we will wait until we have
obtain enough money from the profits. We will fully use all of the facilities that we have
until we got enough funds to add others facilities into the shops.
From the research that we made from all of our shops, most of the customers who
went into our shop are university students. This show that our objectives have hit the target
customers. We always try to give our best services to our customers so that they will come
again into our shop. With a good strategic plan and enough funds, you could sustain your
business for a long term.
Before we even started the business, we realize there exist some risk in our idea to
open a printing and photocopy business. One of it is the area around Taman Tasik Utama
and Taman Bukit Beruang Indah does not have many printing and photocopy shop where
there are a lot of college and university students live nearby. After a lot of thinking, I decide
to open Mewah Supply Enterprise at both of the places in Taman Tasik Utama and Bukit
Beruang Indah.
We have gone through so many difficulties while sustaining our business. Some of
our employees even quit without giving us notice firsthand. In time like this, we keep
telling ourselves to stay strong and never give in to despair.

8. What motivation and traits you undertake to pursue business the opportunities, to
fulfil your passion by starting your own business? (e.g.: experience / perseverance/
initiative assertiveness / efficiency orientation / commitment to work contract / etc.)
The motivation and traits that we took to pursue the business opportunities and to
fulfil our passion by starting our own business is from our family and own experiences.
When our siblings and we were young, we always help our parents with their businesses.
If we want to ask things regarding business, we always seek our family first.
Actually, its quite simple. If you want to have a successful business, you cant just
sit around and wait for the customers to come. There a lot of things you have to do like
doing a research and surveys on the business you want to create and find its compatibility
with the surrounding environment. My motto is Work hard and work smart.

5
9. Do you have your family members who are involved in entrepreneurship/business?
(spouse/ father/ uncle/grandfather, etc.). How would you successfully hand your
business over to a family member, including choosing a successor, transferring
ownership and management?
Actually, as you can see from the previous questions that we have answer stated
that all of our family members have experience in their own business. For the transferring
of the ownership of our business, we never had a plan to hand it over to anyone to begin it,
even among our own family. From our honest opinion, we do this in hope that our children
or other family member can start their own business themselves without waiting for us to
hand it over to them like a lazy person and to avoid the fighting among family members
about the ownership of the business.

10. What critical lessons have you learnt from the successes and failures (if any) from
the businesses that you create?
Believe us, when there is success, there will exist failure. Whenever there is light,
there is shadow. This too applies in business. We have firsthand experience on failure too
when we were just starting our business. But not even once in our mind thinking of giving
up this business. If we fall, we have to stand up stronger. Not to mention, we have moral
support from our family. If the need arises, only then they will lend us a bit of funds to
cope with the business problems.
First of all, we need stabilize its business financial before setting it up. This proves
helpful because we never had a problem with any lacked sufficient of funds in our business
even until today. The lesson you can learnt from this successes and failure we experienced
is to never give up in any botheration and have a strategic plan when doing something. Its
never going to be easy but the fruits of your labor will be sweet.

11. How do sales or marketing efforts including the adoption sales acceleration
technology to organize the interaction between your company and its current and
future customer?
We try our best to satisfy our customer by providing the services that they needed
the most inside the shops. We will try to add any service we lacked when there is a demand
for that particular service. This become our responsibility to help them solve their problems.
In return, we got their trust on our shop capability.
We too provided a business card that includes our company's name, telephone,
email, address of my shops and the services that we provided. Customers can easily contact
us or come to our shop when they need of something. Some of the customers even help us
by marketing our shops to their group of friends. This efforts are proven to be helping in
attracting new customers.
Lastly, it is important to serve our customer with friendlier atmosphere without
bringing any sentiment into the jobs. The purpose of our shop is to give the customers the
best service we could give in helping them to solve any of their problems. We hope that

6
our sales or marketing efforts can help us to have more and different types of customers in
the future.

12. What are the role of your business in job creation and Malaysias economic
growth and development?
Our business already contribute to the country economy growth when we are
paying our monthly business tax. Sometimes, part-timers are hired in our shops to help in
dealing with a lot of orders from the customers. This will be a way of giving out job to
students or jobless people that needed the money in decreasing the unemployment rates in
Malaysia. Basically, this can stimulate the economic development in our country.

13. Are you conduction in any R&D projects for purposes of new product/service
development? If yes, briefly explain. If no, state your constraints.
We dont have any R&D projects for the purposes of doing new product or service
development. We do not have enough money and time for any research and development
(R&D). My partner and I are not professional in this field. So, we are more focusing on our
business rather in R&D.
We just provided the things my customers need. When customers suggest me to
sell some stationery. So, we start selling some stationery like files, staple and pens. After
that, many students come and ask for colour printing service.
We have added on many services too like coil binding, colour copying, colour
output, comb binding, cutting, design, foil stamping, folding, offset printing and more for
our customer. Add on the service in my shops depend to those students and customers
requirement and we will try the best to fulfill their needs.

14. Do you plan to expand your business international? How would begin pursuing
global strategies to gain a competitive advantage?
No, we did not want to expand our business to international now because my
business is still in trading. It is difficult to expand to international since other countries
have better photocopy and printing machine than ours.
Now we only try to expand our business into Private Limited Company (Sendirian
Berhad). We dont have any plan to expand it into other countries. We just need to do our
best to compete with other printing and photocopy shops around the area of Taman Tasik
Utama and Bukit Beruang Indah in Malacca.

7
15. What significant CSR contribution do you undertake e.g. by building partnerships
with local or other entrepreneurs, engaging in real projects and creating social value
for the underprivileged or those who it most?
No, we never undertake building partnerships with local or other entrepreneurs but
my company have done doing some sort sponsoring activity. One of the reason we
participated is because a companys public image is at the mercy of its social responsibility
programs and how aware consumers are of these programs. Anyway, our company can
improve our own public image by supporting non-profits through monetary donations,
volunteerism, in-kind donations of products and services, and strong partnerships.
In the past, we had sponsored university students on doing banner for their events.
We not only earn from the society, but we got a good feedback to those who ask for our
help. This shown that there are relationships between business and society exceed the
profits, so that both of it get to enjoy the benefits to the fullest. We will always try our best
to help everyone in needs especially our target customer which are university student.

3.0 CONCLUSION
From this interview, we can see that every entrepreneur has their own experiences.
We can see that they go through a lot to start up a business. Every business has its own risk
to take. Sometimes, entrepreneur had to face the failure to survive in the business world.
Entrepreneurs learn from their mistakes to continue on expanding their business.
Miss Chee Chui Siah and Miss Soh Chi had told us their story on how they starts
up their business based on photocopy and printing services. They too provides other
services such as making business card, sticker, poster, laminating, binding, souvenirs and
banner to serve the residence at the park other than the university students. They also
wishes to have more full time workers in the future. Now, most of their workers are part
timers. Some of their part time workers would stop working after some period of working
to further their study or change their job to another. They already realized that they will
face many problems on their journey to expand their company.
In a nutshell, we can learn from both Miss Chee Chui Siah and Miss Soh Chi on
how they do their business and their passion to continue her work despite any failure they
had to face. They teaches us that nobody should ever give up easily if we face some
difficulties while doing something we want with proper planning and strategy.
