Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
Big Ideas:
Communicating Through Art: Learning about color and color theory allows one to effectively be able to understand, read,
interpret and communicate within the art field
Essential Questions:
What is Color? What can Color be used for?
How do you create and use a Color Wheel?
What can certain colors represent?
Unit Goals:
Students will be able to create a color wheel and know how to effectively use it.
Students will be able to describe and identify what the primary, secondary and tertiary colors are, along with also being
able to describe and identify color values (what tints and shades are) and color schemes (monochromatic, analogous,
complementary).
Students will be able to understand how colors work and what they may communicate.
Students will also become familiar with using three different types of media.
Unit Summary:
This unit will cover the fundamentals on color and color theory. Students will either be introduced or will be able to build more
new information on color and color theory that they may have. They will become familiar with the definitions and meaning of
color, color theory, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, complementary colors, warm vs. cool colors, tints and
shades, etc. They will practice this new or expanded knowledge by using three different medias. They will also be able to use this
new knowledge to apply it when talking about art (whether their own or others) or when creating art.

display their learning Quiz shows them brainstorming ideas on a sheet of paper on the subject of Color.

Ideas on what they can brainstorm: What comes to mind when you hear the
word Color? What is Color: What can Color be used for? Why do we use Color?
Students will be introduced to Color and Color Theory terms through the form
of a PowerPoint. The PowerPoint contains images, text, audio and video to help
enforce their learning in different formats. Students will follow along and take
notes to the PowerPoint through the handout given.
Collage Activity
Students will create a given design using the collage method to demonstrate
their new knowledge of Warm vs. Cool colors. Students will be given a template
where they will collage cut up pieces of magazines. Students will look for colors
in the magazines to cut and glue that fit under the category given.
Before starting the painting activity, have students participate through a digital
device to play on Kahoot.com to see their learning progress on Color Theory
terms.
Paint Activity
Students will use Tempera paints to create a value scale through the use of tints
and shades.
Students will then work independently to paint / fill out the handout that
contains the graphic organizers that show the Color Wheel and Color
Relationships. Students will practice using paints and mixing colors when filling
out the graphic organizers. They will also practice and demonstrate their
learned knowledge on color relationships through the use of paints.
