french
lessons
Are Frenchwomen inherently stylish?
From their seamless ability to blend
classic with glam to the way they make
everything they wear look effortless and
ageless, we cant help but think so. Here,
we share the seven key styling teachings
that fashionable Parisians follow.

Frenchwomen dont
wear anything with

they focus on the ner

LESSON 6
Always

(Opposite page) French
fashion is about restraint
and balance. Even when

Gratitude

THANKSGIVING is a time for, well, giving

thanks. Its no wonder, then, that as October
rolls around, gratitude (from the Latin gratus,
to be thankful) becomes grist for the mental
health mill. And sure, without doubt, gratitude
is great. But like any magical elixir, there can be
too much of a good thing, and doubling down on
giving thanks sometimes leads to an unhealthy
emotional hangover: gratitude guilt.
This is the name I give to that insidious
byproduct of the thanks-giving trend. It sounds
like this: I should be more grateful for [insert

focusing on the negative and be more grateful

Wonderful
to have good eyes
Madeleine wrote to us to tell her story of how Blue Berry
has impacted her quality of life and helped her enjoy her
favorite hobby: painting beautiful landscapes.

M
y name is Madeleine and I live in Montreal. In my spare time,
I enjoy time in nature, painting beautiful landscapes. In my
later years, my eyes began to weaken. I was very sad about
this, because painting requires accurate vision. When I went to my
optometrist, he diagnosed me as having age-related macular degenera-
tion (AMD), and told me this unfortunately gets worse with time.

I read about Blue BerryTM

In a magazine I read an ad about a supplement called Blue Berry, and
a man who had maintained his eye health. In hopes of getting the same
results, I bought a box and started the same day. Now, I have been
taking Blue Berry for almost a year, and I am very happy with the
product. I am back to painting and my mood has been lifted.

The dark green seeds, also known as pepitas, are

shelled or unshelled, raw or roasted.

THE BENEFITS
Rachel Bies, a Toronto-based holistic nutritionist,
shares some of the seeds health perks.

proteinsimilar to a chicken thigh.
Magnesium plays a key role in heart health and
keeps blood sugar under control. Get nearly half of

effect due to tryptophan, which also acts as an
excellent mood booster.
The seeds contain a diverse combination of
antioxidant-rich vitamins, including vitamin E.
Zinc supports cell growth and development, and repairs your

3 COMMON beauty
challenges, SOLVED
Stylist and Cityline contributor Lynn Spence offers
simple solutions so you can wear your age with
condence.
Trauttmansdorff
Pictures The challenge: THINNING HAIR
Thinning hair is something most of us deal with as we age,
says Spence. It lacks life and volume and can make
even the brightest outts fall at.
The solution: PULL OUT ALL THE TRICKS
When it comes to healthy hair, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner is
crucial. Ive been wowed by the Pantene Colour Preserve Volume collection,
Spence says. I love that it helps protect my colour and keeps it radiant and
that it doesnt weigh down my hair. Its great to have a product with dual benets!

The challenge: DRY SKIN

You may have noticed that as you age, your skin becomes drier and less
rm. Staying hydrated is a great rst step, but the real game changer is
what you put on your skin.
The solution: MOISTURIZE
After cleansing, use a gel moisturizer like Olay Age Defying Advanced
Hydrating Gel. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, this moisturizer
penetrates the skins surface and provides 24 hours of sheer and
breathable hydration.

The challenge: AGING TEETH

When youre condent in how you look, you cant help but smile. Spence adds,
Your smile is what draws people to you, and stained or aging teeth shouldnt
stand in your way. Put your best look forward with a healthy-looking smile.
The solution: USE THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR A BETTER CLEAN
Forty-eight percent of Canadians who havent seen a dentist in the past year have
gum disease, though this can almost always be prevented or reversed if caught
early1. Investing in the right tools can help. Using an electric toothbrush such as
the Oral-B Pro1000 Black Cross Action gives you a dentist-clean feeling and it
removes 300 percent more plaque along the gumline than a manual brush.
Spence suggests pairing your brush with Crest Pro-Health toothpaste to
promote healthier gums & stronger teeth. Nothing completes a look
quite like a healthy, beautiful smile!

When Elizabeth and Alan Skelly purchased their

Victorian-style house in Torontos Cabbagetown

refresh. However, a problematic basement and lack
of functionality throughout the home quickly led to
the decision to renovate the entire dwelling. Add to

really enjoyed it, she says, but taking on an entire
house at once overwhelmed me.
Looking for a little help choosing paint colours
and statement-making wallpaper at Farrow & Ball,
Elizabeth made an appointment for a home consul-
tation, where she met Jacklynn Little. They immedi-
ately connected, and when Elizabeth learned that

envisioned. Traditional furnishings from the Skellys
previous home were given face-lifts to work with the
new interior, and dramatic accents were brought
in by way of bold paint colours and vibrant textiles.
The result is a welcoming space that boasts lots of
modern appeal but still holds tons of staying power.

SHADES OF BLUE
This calming colour is used in
the Skellys home to unify the
decorating scheme. From pat-
terns and stripes of cobalt and
sky on toss cushions and bed-
ding to solid blocks of indigo
and navy on walls and uphol-
stery, the hue is found in every
room. Luckily, its one Elizabeth
was only too happy to live with.
It was my mothers favourite
colour, she says. She passed
away a few years ago after bat-

Blue is also the perfect com-
