Unit aim: Provide students with an opportunity to develop a focused, in-depth,

understanding of the range, characteristics, complexity and contexts that define
media and communication activity. It will require the student, through exploration
and investigation to enter into a more formal dialogue of personal interrogation
and understanding designed to confirm strengths, enthusiasms and ambitions.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit the student will:

1. Understand the characteristics and context for a chosen media and

communication activity.

2. Be able to use knowledge of the characteristics and context of a media and

communication activity.

3. Be able to use evaluation in support of creative media production.

LO1.1 Research:

Analyse the conventions of Vice productions as well any other factual programme
that portrays the issues you want to cover

Secondary Research Although you are focusing on a certain topic you are
still producing a factual programme and the conventions are the same. Using
the internet and books (not examples), research the conventions of factual
programme.

Dont just analyses programmes but look for helpful hints from the experts on
how to conduct all of these elements
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-2zrWh82iU as an example

You need to focus on

Question techniques (open questions / closed questions / Is the
interviewer pushing for an answer)
Interview styles (relaxed / formal) and their locations
Introduction to the factual programme
Narrative to the production - how does it end? Is there closure? Is it left
to the audience to decide?
How are facts presented
Voice over techniques
Presenter techniques (talking to audience / as if audience is not there)

Focusing on VICE style

- Examples find at least 3 examples of
Vice style programming and analyse and
evaluate as above
- These should be in-depth analysis of the
videos, with at least 10 screenshots
uploaded and discussed.
- You should refer to specific time codes in
the videos when discussing use of sounds
(or anything that cant be shown in a
screenshot)

1. Harvard Referencing Ensure all of your research is Harvard

Referenced. This is easiest if you complete it as you work rather than just
doing it all at the end. The more references you use, the greater the
reliability of research.
LO1.2 Propose a brief:

Based on your research from Task 1, come up with a topic you would like to discuss.

You will then need to produce the following techniques in order to demonstrate your
ability and understanding of the Vice style programming

1. A professional 5 minute interview in the style of Vice productions(set up on

location, with the correct props, camera set-up, correct use of sound and
excellent question techniques - In order to carry out the last technique you
will need to research your topic)
2. Your interview must have cut away shots (hands, props etc.. as well as
footage of the contents)
3. A 1 minute piece to camera introducing your production as they do (marked
on script and location as well as footage used to introduce piece)
4. A professional 2 minute voice over (you will be marked on the script as well as
the tone of delivery to suit the vice style)
LO2 Plan and Produce a Media Product:

Using your knowledge of characteristics and conventions, plan, develop and

produce your elements
Your pre-production should include the following

Scripts
Questions
Camera shots
List of archive footage used
Equipment needed
Location recces

Your finished product should be of a

high standard and demonstrate an
awareness of key techniques and
concepts. This will include

Camera Angles (Rule of thirds with in interviews)

Lighting
Sound
Mise-en-Scene
Questioning Techniques
Use of cutaways
Voice over production
Piece to Camera style
How well you follow the style of programmes like vice
LO3 Evaluation:

At the end of each LO, you should be completing evaluative journal entries -
evaluating, analysing and highlighting areas for improvement.

It is extremely important that these are completed as you work and not just at
the end. Please remember to take photos during production and screenshots
as you edit. All of this will help to support what you are evaluating.

Follow the guidance available at http://thcvibe.weebly.com/lo3-be-able-to-

use-evaluation-in-support-of-creative-media-production.html to help you
through each weeks entry.
