Title of Software: Seesaw

Title of Lesson: Seesaw Fun!

Grade Level(s): I think Seesaw could be used in a classroom as young as Kindergarten, and as
old as twelfth grade. (Modifications may need to be done, but I think a wide array of students
would benefit from this software). This lesson plan will be geared toward third grade students
learning about Seesaw.

Goal:
1. Students should be able to upload videos, photos, or drawings that they created of things
they have learned in class.
2. Students should also be able to upload their creations to their classroom page so parents,
teachers, and classmates can see what the student has learned.
3. Students should be able to write blog posts and comment on what their peers have posted.
This will help the students learn how to collaborate with one another and realize that people
have differing beliefs and opinions and we can all learn from one another.

Procedures:

Lesson Beginning
Introductory Overview
I will introduce this software by asking the students if they would prefer doing homework on pen
and paper or if they would rather use images and videos to complete their homework. Why do
you all prefer to use technology? After that conversation I will explain what Seesaw is. Seesaw
is an app that allows you all to post images and videos of your work and I will be able to view
them. I can also share your work with your parents so they will be able to see all the great work
that you do in class. Isnt that super cool? Next, I will pass around the paper with the QR code
in order to sign up for my classroom. I will share my iPad on the Apple TV so all the students
can see my screen as they follow along Hopefully the students are excited about Seesaw, and I
can begin to teach the many aspects of this amazing software.
Motivation/Focus
I will motivate my students to be excited to learn about Seesaw by telling them they can use
technology to turn in their homework and share their work with each other and their parents.
Students dont have to turn in exit slips on paper, rather they can grab their iPads and create
something meaningful to them that makes sense of what they learned in class. I think most
students are excited and invested in learning when they are able to use technology to further
their understanding.

Poem on board

Lesson Development
1. Before class starts, I will pass around a sheet of paper with a QR code on it that allows
the students to join my class. I will also have my iPad hooked up on the Apple TV so the
students can follow along with me.
2. The students will walk in and take their seats
3. I will begin the class by prompting the students to look at the board and ask if any of the
students know what the piece of paper is
1. Hopefully one student is able to say its a QR code and explain
2. I will further explain what a QR code is if there are any questions
1. A QR code is a 2D barcode. It can be scanned in order to get
information. So I want everyone to scan the QR code and the information
you will get is being able to log onto my class!
3. I will give the students 30 seconds to scan the code and join my classroom as my iPad is
already displayed on the Apple TV so the students are ready to follow along with me.
1. I will have all the students turn their iPads to me so I can see they are on the opening
page
2. First we are going to introduce ourselves to each other!
3. I will demo the drawing tab first. My iPad will be projected so the students can watch
what I am doing. I will click on the drawing tab and show the students that they can talk
while they draw to help explain their thinking. The students are required to draw one
thing they enjoy and record themselves on why they like the thing they drew.
. Emphasis that the students can draw and talk at the same time.
1. The students will have 2 minutes to complete this task
2. After two minutes I will show them how to upload their creations on our page
3. I will demo the photos tab next. My iPad will be projected so the students can watch
what I am doing. I will take a picture of a poem that will be on a handout I create. After I
take the picture, I will show the students the various tools (adding text, drawing on the
image, and recording a voice over) they can use to showcase their understanding of the
material. For example, students can add text, draw on the picture, or record a voice
over. After I finish editing the picture, I will post it to my page. On the handout will be a
poem and I dont want the students to read the poem out loud yet. I want them to look at
title and draw a picture on the image of what the poem may be about.
1. After this demo, I will have the students take two minutes and practice this skill. They
will then upload it to their classrooms page
2. I will then go back to the home page and have the students watch me demo the video
tab. My iPad will be projected so the students can watch what I am doing. I will record a
video of myself reading a poem (now we will read it). After I finish my video, I will press
the green button at the top to publish it to my classroom page. I could also add text to
help describe what I am doing in the video.
1. Students will turn to their elbow partners and record one another reading the poem.
Once they have read the poem, they are to upload it to the classroom page. I will give
the students three minutes to create a really short video and add a description of the
video.
1. I will then tell the students to go on their feed view, which is located in the top left hand
corner, and find a post from someone else that they really like
2. I will then demo how to like a post and comment on it. The students will then practice by
liking one of their peers work and commenting on another.
1. After the students have learned the basics of Seesaw, I will ask the students to find
something they created throughout the lesson that they really liked
2. They will go to their post, click on the button with the three dots. They will then click get
QR PDF. This will allow the students to create a QR code and post it around the room of
what they learned today. They will be able to use the QR code in the future and I think
its a great tool to understand. Why would you want to make a QR code? What are some
reasons in which it could be beneficial?
3. Lastly, I will have the students click the people at the top left hand corner, and click on
Class Blog. I will have the students write a 1-2 sentences about a feature they liked
using on Seesaw (image, video, QR code, etc)
4. Close out activity: Do you all like using technology to turn in your homework? Would you
rather use Seesaw or hand written assignment with pen and paper? Why? Well thank
you for behaving so well!

Student Involvement
Throughout the lesson, the students are constantly participating in understanding the software.
I give them time to work on the app and create images that are meaningful to their learning.

Lesson Ending
Review and Closure
Have students write a short blog post of what they have learned. They should include how they
think Seesaw could be utilized in their everyday classrooms.

Preview of Next Lesson/Suggestions for Next Steps

The next lesson plan will be geared towards the teachers. I will demonstrate how teachers can
view all the students post, or just individual students. This helps keep what the students are
learning in an organized way. I will also show how teachers can facilitate discussion between
students. I can also focus on collaboration, commenting, and blogging for my next step.

Special Adaptations:
I need to make sure that every iPad has Seesaw and has access to the camera and
microphone. Try and spread around the room/people can go outside class for a more quiet
space

Anticipated Difficulties:
Some difficulties I anticipate on experiencing in the classroom would be students spending too
much time trying to make a funny video, instead of just testing out the different features and
moving on. The students may become distracted and fall behind. I am going to make a
handout.
